Pesce Martinook Tarasenko

Created by: djmbrown
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 23, 2023
Published: Jul. 23, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Could be off by a draft pick on either or both of the deals. But the idea is who I’d ask for in the Carolina deal, shedding salary and getting tougher to play against.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Martinook, Jordan ($900,000 retained)
  2. Pesce, Brett
Additional Details:
Not sure how Martinook is valued but I figure if Nylander signs long term this is close since Pesce is leaving for nothing at the end of the year. Plus Carolina gets Robertson who has potential for more scoring if he can stay healthy.
2.
TOR
  1. 2024 6th round pick (BUF)
BUF
  1. Brodie, TJ
  2. Murray, Matt
Additional Details:
Buff gets Brodie for taking Murray. They can either keep him to try and see if he can build some value or buy him out.

I would love Brodie, but there’s no chance the Sabres would want Murray or pay the Murray buyout.

Better add a 1st to that Buffalo trade to get a convo started.

I don't see the Sabres bailing out the Leafs, now or ever.

Martinook is valued because of his presence in the locker room, and that he is a fan favorite. I mean, who would replace the screams of “Mista Svechnikov” before each game? Not to mention, he provides a lot of natural leadership, and is defensively responsible and plays a heavy game. You just don’t move glue guys like that, even when the fanbase gets frustrated when Rod throws the occasional curve ball with Martinook playing on the top line. It works to provide that spark, but frustrating nevertheless. Frankly, if Pesce for Nylander was ever going to happen, it would have happened at some point over the past 5-6 years. It hasn’t happened all this time, why would that change now? As for Robertson, he holds no value, and if the Canes want a lightning in a bottle prospect, they still have Rizzo in the system.

Well I figured Murray is a better goalie than Comrie so it would be an upgrade there for them if they do choose to keep him for the one year. But as I stated there could be another mid range prospect or pick added. I get the idea that Buffalo might not want to help out a rival though which is why I figured Brodie added the value as he’s still a really strong D, just not the kind Toronto needs at this point.

Also the Sabres wouldn’t have enough cap space to make this trade. Murray already declined a trade to Buffalo last year too.

The Canes trade is a big L for the Leafs; Nylander + Brodie >> Pesce + Tarasenko. We Leaf fans need to chill; let’s see where we sit after the next shoe drops - Tre & team have a plan, just need to be patient while it unfolds. Downgrading our team makes zero sense though

Man, 6.25 cap hit and 8 million in actual salary. I didn't realize just how bad that contract was.

Yeah, it's a lot of money. Toronto wouldn't give what it would take to move both those contracts at once.

Dear Leaf Nation,

The Buffalo Sabres have absolutely no interest in helping your hockey team out of the cap troubles the Leafs are now experiencing. So please, for all parties involved, stop this nonsense.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Sincerely,
We the Sabreland faithful

Ummmm....what kind of D does Toronoto need if not Brodie? This casual observer thinks a solid stay-at-home d-man like that is exactly what your team needs.
