The Avs waived or demoted their presumed to be 7th and 8th defenseman (Hunt and Malinski) and one of their 13th forward options (Tufte) while releasing two others: Kiviranta/Holland from their PTO.

While this is likely due to trying to get some of those guys to clear waivers and maybe call them back up soon (Tufte/Hunt) it leaves us with 21 man roster, $1.3 to $3.3 million in available cap space (depends if Francouz goes LTIR or not), but we cannot accrue cap space (LTIR for Landeskog) so going with less than 22 active players doesn't really benefit us.

I wonder if they are setting themselves up to pickup someone from waivers as this would give them:
$1.3 million to simply add to the roster
$2.0 million in goalie cap space (Annunen would get sent down to AHL)

My favorite targets:
RD: Dylan Coghlan (Carolina) $850k - averages 1.5 shots per game, 1 block, 1 hit, and takes very few penalties in 3rd line roles with Vegas and Carolina (2 great systems to develop in).

Waiting game:
G: James Reimer ($1.5m) or Alex Lyon ($900k) in Detroit
G: Eric Comrie ($1.8m) or Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen ($840k) in Buffalo

2023 13th Overall Pick Zach Benson will start the season with the Sabres

And likely in a prime spot

Good news for him, bad news for the Sabres in the long term. Too much money on one player, cap hell coming soon.

? How, the cap’s only going to go up, we are very much approaching an era where every star is making 10+ mil, that’s a good contract for Dahlin and the Sabres

You can add David Rittich vs Phoenix Copley vs Cam Talbot, I don’t think LA will keep 3 goalies the whole season

Nope, they're trying to cash in on a goalie getting hurt. Same with Montreal running 3 goalies.

I missed that the Kings hadn't already sent Rittich down

It would be hilarious and maybe genius if the Blue Jackets played the season with NO top line center (Laine-Gaudreau-Marchenko) but their middle six was nothing BUT centers: (Texier-Jenner-Roslovic and Johnson-Fantilli-Sillinger)

I wouldn't exactly call Texier or Johnson centers, they've mostly played LW (also Johnson had a 29.5 Faceoff% last year) but yes, their middle 6 seems packed with centers

Well, looking at macroeconomics, the cap could not break 90M$ before 2030. Paying 10M+ for a star player might be a trend, hockey remains a weakest link sport. Alloting 12% of the lone resource you can't control to 1/23 of the roster sure looks like a risky move. EDM and TOR do have stars, but they don't win cause they don't have the cap room to surround them.

The cap is 100% breaking 90mil before 2030, in fact, it's most likely around 95-100mil then

Yep

2024-2025 projections 87.5-88m (4m to 4.5m)
2025-2026 same as 2024 91.5-92.5m (4m to 4.5m)

After that I dont know the rise but I think it levels off at either 2m or 2.5m like it did before covid.

But yea by 2030 if we go by the original 2m mark and assuming 4.5m increase in 2024 and 2025

102.5m cap by 2030

If there is another expansion could even see it higher lets see

Interesting way to end an argument, but fair enough, I guess I should envy tour optimism.

Far from irrelevant. He holds good value on the penalty kill and as a 7D more than Freidman or Butcher, plus is younger than both with room to improve. Also had a solid 17 points 54 games in the AHL. Obviously isn't a flashy pickup but it's better depth for Pittsburgh than what they currently have.

All of those claims make sense, Ottawa gets Thomspon back, Colorado gets a goalie (and he's young for a goalie), Calgary gets a 4th liner and Pittsburgh gets a 7th D (Ludvig made it all the way here in Florida's camp, that tells you a lot about his training camp performance, clearly, Pittsburgh sees something in him too)
