Leafs Three-Way Trade

Created by: bg77
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 26, 2023
Published: Jul. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Here is my idea for a Leafs three-way trade.

To Nashville
- RW William Nylander

To Toronto
- RW Travis Konecny

To Philadelphia
- RW Joakim Kemell
- 2024 NSH 1st Rd Pick (Top 10 protection)
- 2024 WPG 2nd Rd Pick
- 2025 NSH 2nd Rd Pick
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Kemell, Joakim
  2. 2024 1st round pick (NSH)
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (WPG)
  4. 2025 2nd round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
The 2024 NSH 1st Rd Pick will include top-10 protection. This pick will transfer to 2025 if Nashville receives a top-10 selection.
NSH
  1. Nylander, William
Additional Details:
William Nylander is acquired by Nashville, and extended for 8 yrs at $9,000,000 AAV. Tennessee has no state income tax, so this cap hit would have Nylander take home similar if/not greater pay than in Ontario with the Leafs at his $10,000,000+ asking price.
2.
PHI
  1. Kemell, Joakim
  2. 2024 1st round pick (NSH)
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (WPG)
  4. 2025 2nd round pick (NSH)

I believe that 1 year of Nylander is worth more than 2 of Konecny.

I assume Philly is the one team that says yes.

An extended Nylander gets Konecny? This is a horrendous trade for TO.

Nice trade idea.

Philadelphia most likely says yes.
Nashville probably think it's a steep price, they need scoring though, but D first Trotz might not like Nylander so who knows.
Toronto should do it imo, 2 years of Konecny at 5.5 is a great bargain, and it alleviates some cap issues.

Hey Luguber,

Thank you for the feedback! I see the people saying Nylander is better than Konecny which is obviously valid, but my thinking was the same as yours. You also will be able to extend Konecny much easier than Nylander when the time comes, probably in the $7,500,000-$8,000,000 range.

For NSH, this is a steep price, and one they likely wouldn't be willing to pay. Kemell is one of the few stars NSH has in the pipeline, who may make the roster (unlikely, but not impossible). He already is showing glimpses of being an elite goal scorer, but needs more development time. Additionally, NSH is in a rebuild, paying a 1st and two 2nds on top of arguably their top forward prospect for 1 piece just doesn't make sense for them. NSH will get the scoring when it makes sense for them to compete in 2-3 years. No sense overpaying to get scoring now when the team isn't truly equipped to win the cup.

I’ll leave the trade alone (I wouldn’t do it if I were Tre, but it’s not outrageous) but I do take umbrage with your taxes comment. That myth has basically been debunked; sure some states in USA have lower income tax rates than some Canadian provinces but lots of other factors to consider like signing bonuses (Leafs - more than any other team - give their star players massive signing bonuses meaning you get your money faster which is worth $), endorsements (no market can offer endorsements more than the Leafs), for USA players they only pay taxes while they reside in canada (2/3 of year) reducing any tax differential. It’s just a story that is over played imo

Cannot imagine that Kemmell would be available for pretty much any player
