My thoughts

Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 7, 2023
Published: Aug. 7, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I have to give Dubas big props on his start as PIT GM. Obviously EK65 was an aggressive move with massive payoff potential but I have some other notes to give.

- Dumped Granlund and Petry. Upon Guentzel’s return, they are ~800k over the cap with a roster of 23 and Carter still on the roster. Carter is the only viable option to move for cap compliance so a deal WILL get done there, whatever it takes.
- I think PIT’s biggest issue last year was depth. Dubas has already addressed that with additions of Graves, Eller, Acciari, Nieto and Pitlick, without overspending. All great role-players and I believe they’re all easily worth the money. That is a legitimately solid 4th line, and the 3rd line could be solid as well depending on who they replace Carter with.
- Smith replaces Zucker and he’s as consistent a veteran as you can ask for.
- Some people may have their doubts about EK65, but he undoubtedly fits their timeline which kinda removes the risk many other teams would have with him. Assuming he can remain healthy, I believe Pettersson is an absolutely perfect partner to complement him. He should be able to do his thing while Pete holds down the fort.
- As I said previously, a Carter deal WILL certainly be made eventually which gives them a bit of space to finish off the bottom-6. I pick Kessel here on a one-year but others I’ve looked at as options include Bailey, Suter, Comtois, Motte or Tatar if they really get lucky and convince him.

All in all, I think this roster can get the Penguins back into a playoff spot assuming everyone stays healthy but It will be very competitive with BUF and OTT biting at their ankles. Just wanted to give Dubas props on his start.

Phil? No thanks, he’s washed and already wore out his welcome once.

Like the commenter above, I'd also pass on Kessel but this is a good assessment. I believe a little more now that before, that Dubas could work something out with Carter.

This.

This is true, but Dubas and him go back and I would not be surprised now (especially after what I witnessed today) if something works out for all interested parties

That’s true, but something’s gotta give here. They could threaten to bury him and he caves on that. He will not be on the roster when Guentzel returns.

Not enough incentive to rescue you guys from the cap hell Dubas got you into.

Full no move clause means they can’t bury him. He’s stuck on the NHL roster.

Disagree on addressing the depth issue. Don't think they completely solved that. I think that is a casualty of the EK trade. Small issue but you moved out your #2 goalie. Now Ned is in that spot. Comfortable with that?

Make the pick going to Chicago a 2nd and the Hawks may be interested.

Some team might take Carter for that but it won't be the Hawks. They don't need Carter - they have too many forwards already. Can't see them having any interest in Poulin either. Plus, Carter isn't waiving for Chicago to sit in the press box every night.

They can’t bury him. He has a full NMC. They can scratch him but that’s all they can do.

I loled. Things were worse under Hextall.

I knew things had to be bad if they were considering Stan Bowman as his replacement. I keep saying GM's know better than us if they're being put in these positions but some of them make me scratch my head.

I’m sure they considered lots of people. I cringed when I heard Bowman’s name, as well. But I was used to cringing with MoRon sinking the ship. Now, the Pens are $80k over the cap even with Guentz on the active roster. That’s an easy maneuver esp considering the trade Dubas just made where he actually managed to pull off an ACGM-favorite “all our bad players for your best player” deal.

Yeah that trade was pretty nice. I'm just thankful the Hawks didn't tie up a retention slot in the process to help facilitate it.
