Realistic Laf Trade

Created by: EQuinn31
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 9, 2023
Published: Aug. 9, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
MTL
  1. Lafrenière, Alexis [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Agree to sign contract after trade. 3 years 4.5 AAV
NYR
  1. Dach, Kirby
  2. 2025 1st round pick (MTL)
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
In my opinion, this is what Montreal would have to give up for Lafrenière. Which I wouldn't want to do this as a Habs fan. I still think the NYR would want more on top of this as well.

In what universe is that realistic?
I don't even think Dach for Lafrenière one for one is a good deal for Habs

Its just plain bigotry that we see on this site way too often.

The "oh he is french so the habs definitely want him". Is lazy and not rooted in facts.

If you go back and look at trades where the habs netted more francophones than they gave up and you have literally 1 NHL example in almost 20 years (drouin) and a coupke minor league deals.

Its not something they do in fact they have actually largely avoided it over the years

And that was Bergevin's ego doing the move. Hughes is a people's person. Lawyer/agent. He builds bridges not destroys them. He doesnt seem to be the type to put players in situations they won't be able to thrive through. There's a reason he went back to Petry as they left on good terms. Whereas Bergevin would never bring back anyone he culled.

This is to show what the Rangers value Laffy at and what it would take for MTL to acquire him. A massive overpay

I'm hoping the new coaching staff will use Laf properly and get him to reach his potential, but I guess we will see. Interesting trade idea for sure.

Trust me, as a Caps fan who just had Lavy for the last few years - he is not one of the coaches who will have a long leash, especially for younger players. I was shocked the Rangers hired him (taking into account a) the poor player development they already have and b) the amount of untapped potential their young players have)...

I've seen that about Laviolette, but I think the assistant coaches they hired will help with player development. Read good things about Michael Peca and Dan Muse in that regard.
I'm also sure Drury knows the importance to the team getting Laf and Kakko to reach their potential will be, and stressed that during the interview process.

Agreed.

Peca is awesome. I remember how impactful he was with the Caps. Really, really helped the Caps centers (specifically Kuzy - so much so that Kuzy had time on PK and faceoff percentage skyrocketed). Helped a bunch with faceoffs, defensive positioning, and overall hockey IQ.

That's certainly an overpay for LAF. Just offer 4.3m on an offer sheet, which costs just a second rounder, which the Rangers may not afford.

Given that Laf is unsigned and NYR only have a certain amount of cap to sign him, I'd say his value is tied to how much an OS pry's him away from NY.

NYR can say his value is a million 1sts if they want but if he gets OS'd to an amount that NYR can't match within 10 days by trading Goodrow, etc, that's his actual true value then. Not the millions 1sts.

Honestly his actual value is what anyone is willing to pay for him and judging by what we've seen on here, a 1st and an ok prospect is probably the highest Ive seen anyone willing to do.

Lafreniere is clearly the better player, but I don't think the difference is a 1st + 2nd.

Laffy doesn't have 1st OA draft pick value anymore.

Go look at the Dach trade, that's the only comparable. Laf's 1st 3 years were better than Dach's. Make of that what you will.

I did. Sorry. Laffy doesn't have the same value he had when he was drafted. And I'm a Laffy supporter. I still think he can be a star.

Yeah you guys have a 3-4 year window opened now that you have to go for it

Our window is open for however long we have Igor and fox, they won’t rebuild once Panarin zib and kreider retire, they’ll target free agents and trade a lot. NY RARELY rebuilds, it’s the Dolan way. Guys like othmann and Perreault will solidify top 6 when open and we’ll have to make sure Laf and Kakko can be saved
