I’m seeing the exact same trade than you , desmith to VAN.

And I’ll go newhook or monahan on the first and the other one with Dach and Anderson. Slaf with dvo and gallagher or rhp!

I got to say, Im loving that the Habs didn't take on any real salary in this deal. Habs fans will moan they should have got more but they need to take a step back and realize what Hughes was able to accomplish in this entire Petry fiasco. We went from Hoffman and Pitlick to 2.3M in cap retention and a bunch of assets.

So real question here

Who is getting healthy scratched on Detroits blue line

As to me this trade makes the Holl signing even worse and you can even apply it to Ghost as now either guy could be a healthy scratch or you could see Petry be it and for 2.375m that seems like a waste

I don't think there is any way the Canucks can do that unless MTL wants to take back cap. They are already over if Pearson is healthy, which is sounds like he is. Don't get me wrong, I'd love a better back up and Desmith is perfect. But the cap is an issue.

I'd def be interested in DeSmith as a backup as long as he costs essentially nothing. We would have to be able to shed some cap as well though and if that is going to cost us then I wouldn't trade for DeSmith.

We could send Pearson's expiring and Mtl could look to deal him at the deadline for a 3rd or something.

I imagine the Habs would rather lose Desmith for nothing than have to take a risk by adding Pearson for a hopeful pick down the line. Their forward core is already slotted and they cleared Hoffman and Pitlick precisely because they had no spots in the lineup for them.

MTL currently has almost 7 mil in cap space. Adding Pearson would add 1.5 over DeSmith. Not necessarily the best way to use cap space but it could work out. Pearson is a good vet presence who could play anywhere in the lineup really. Canucks might have to add a 4th or something but they can't take DeSmith without money going out.

Except Habs would have to move a young player down the lineup to accommodate Pearson and then they would have to WAIVE another player because they can't keep all of them on the roster. Its not even cap space the issue. Its literal roster spots. Habs simply don't have a roster spot for him. All for what? Maybe a 3rd/4th rounder at best? Not only that, they'd have to give him ice time so he could perform well enough that someone would want him. Which is no guarantee either. If someone wants him, Vancouver could just move him themselves. My gut is they can't without retention or sweeteners.

It simply wouldn't work for MTL. Like I said, it would make more sense to lose Desmith for nothing on waivers than to take back Pearson.

Fair enough. I wouldn't want to add much to Pearson to move him. Which puts us back at DeSmith maybe going on waivers for someone. In a scenario where we can create cap space without it costing much I'd prefer DeSmith to be our backup for a yr rather than Martin. It gives Silovs a chance to keep developing in the AHL and gives us a quality backup to an oft injured Demko. Might require another team.

There cap is already screwed with or without DeSmith they need to make moves.

Hughes has said that they plan to operate without off season LTIR so they arent taking any money back at all to do that as Carey Price wont be on LTIR to start the year. They will be at the limit once their injured guys come off IR and the waiver exempt go down to Laval

Exactly - they are already over if Pearson is healthy. That was my point. I just don't see them digging a deeper hole to have to wriggle out of.
