Scheifele Trade

Created by: Celtics21
Team: 2023-24 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 31, 2023
Published: Sep. 1, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lysell probably doesn’t start the year on the top 6, but I think he’s being slept on because he wore down after the late Juniors campaign. He’s super talented and his speed/edge work is top 10% of all NHL players. He needs to play smarter, but the talent is being slept on.
Trades
1.
BOS
  1. 2025 3rd round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
The loss of Karlsson plus Grz going back to his college coach in a defined role. There have been rumors that Grz will end up there eventually. Clears salary for the next deal
2.
BOS
  1. Scheifele, Mark
Additional Details:
Swayman is arguably one of the best young goaltenders in the league with tremendous upside for a team who is likely trading their goalie. Merkulov is a very productive wing at the AHL level. What he lacks in skating, he has other items in spades. Very underrated.

While Scheifele has a great pedigree, any acquiring team has to consider buying him out of FA at 31. That’s pretty daunting and that doesn’t consider his reputation of being me focused. This is a massive risk for the Bruins. The likelihood he makes it to free agency is higher than others because of his age.
WPG
  1. Merkulov, Georgi
  2. Swayman, Jeremy
  3. 2025 3rd round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
Wouldn’t be the Bruins first choice. Am concerned about clubhouse cancer rumors and you have to buy him out of FA as a 31 year old with a too long contract. That said, he would fit the current mold of the team and offer a needed scoring punch. The hope is the better clubhouse would lead to less of the clubhouse lawyer effect.

Rather not

Now if they extended him and flipped him in a package for Elias and Noah in Calgary. Or Elias in Van. Ok. Otherwise…i want no part of him.

Sharks likely have 2-3 NHL caliber LD that won’t make the roster, why give up an 3rd for another option that’s undersized and overpaid?

I get that Gryz isn't a fit for a rebuilding team, especially if you're giving up a decent draft pick, so the trade makes no sense for the Sharks. But he would absolutely be the best defenseman on the Sharks

Highly debatable! He’s a decent pieces but he’s like a 4th/5th kind of guy in a good team.

The Sharks wouldn't give up a pick for Gryz, but might exchange him for another, cheaper, D man.

Why take a chance on Scheifele? Wouldn't you rather have Hertl or Couture instead? Imagine Hertl centering Pasta. Czech mate.

Something like Couture or Hertl + Simek for Swayman + Gryz? Boston gets the star center it needs, Sharks get their #1 goalie of the future plus a Dman who can carry the puck.

I see the value from my perspective, but for whatever reason goalie value is always really weird. Essentially the top end has value (like when Miller got traded for 2 firsts a couple years ago), but otherwise it oddly doesn't carry as much as I'd think it should...

Your defensive rating and record disagrees with that point. I do like a lot of your talent, but there is something missing.

I get that everyone would love it if Grz were taller including Grz, because at his production … If he looked like your typical defenseman, he’d be making 50% more. He’s a complete defenseman and almost every important stat backs that up

I’ve thought about a Hertl deal. You probably aren’t going to like my position on Courure with his contract length and age. I think there is something there for Hertl.

That's an easy no for Winnipeg. Goalies simply don't have anywhere near the value required to land a 1C. Especially one that has scored 40G and is a 6 time PPG center.

Who is going to pay a premium for a 31 year old entering free agency where a team is likely going to have to pay him premium money until he’s 37 or 38 to make him stay? I’m sure you’ll get a return for a playoff run if you retain. That’s probably good for Boston.

My concern about Scheifele is he’s been rumored to have bullied Patrick Laine, been benched for his disposition, and given interviews that were me centric. His former coaches comments about the culture were pretty disturbing and while vague, it seemed pretty clear it was focused around Scheifele and Wheeler. Couple that with a pretty bad plus/minus

I get he’s talented, but there are a ton of red flags around him.

He’s going to get a token first at the deadline minimum, the pieces you offer don’t exactly fit the needs or have really hit the history of the jets gm, everything been buy low or draft in the goalie department. Jets really need rhd dman youth and Center ice youth.

That's all just rumors that you are trying to use to rationalize a lowball offer to yourself and others. Who knows what team will offer how much for him. All we know is that it happens, every, single, July, 1st. Without fail.

The fact is you're offer isn't close to what almost any player can get at the TDL. Ben Chiarot returned a 1st at the TDL and the standard return for a decent player is a 1st a good prospect.

Considering that if Scheifele is available at the TDL, he'll be more than a decent player and would return a 1st and good prospect minimum.

So, start with a 1st and good prospect and then add for having Scheifele for a full year and then more if you want retention.

Lowball offers won't cut it, no matter how you try to rationalize it to yourself.

You can minimize Swayman’s capabilities all you want, but he’s as talented as any young goaltender in the league. For the next 5 years, he should have more value than Hellly. I’m very comfortable he’d secure more than a late first rounder in a trade. I certainly wouldn’t even consider a late first for him if I were Boston.

Unlike Helly, Scheifele, or Ullmark (in 2 years), you aren’t committing a premium salary into his mid to late 30s. I think Winnipeg fans are minimizing the age/commitment piece with Helly and thinking that translates to all goalies.

I’d also watch an AHL game or two before you minimize Merkulov as well.

I believe the best course of action for Bruins is to wait until free agency for Scheifele who should be available, but this offer is better than what Toronto gave for Ryan O’Reilly

Cool, still don’t want him. Sucks defensively, locker room room cancer. Next contract will be a problem. Pass. Rather go with what they have than waste assets to get him.

Better to do nothing than panic and do something regrettable.

What people don’t get is he won’t be free. The generalization on goalie value (while interesting) isn’t super relevant when you contemplate Swayman’s age and upside. The concept of trading him for a 31 year old pending free agent with a poor plus minus on a playoff team is bleeping terrifying.

There is a lot to hate about acquiring Scheifele starting with the contract demands to keep him. I do think disregarding the commentary about his locker room impact with regard to price is also not a realistic expectation.

They will likely get a late first round pick and a prospect from a team while taking max retention. I don’t believe that is close to the value we are discussing here.
