Offensive Development Model (NHLe)

Offensive Development Model (NHLe)

Draft Class: 2022

Description
Hi all! Welcome to my third and final NHLe model for the 2022 draft class. For those of you who have never heard of it, NHLe is a method of converting point totals from other leagues into what their "NHL equivalent" would be. The purpose of this is so that you can (not super accurately, but somewhat) compare points totals between different leagues. For more information, visit the link at the bottom of this description to see Patrick Bacon's NHLe model.

This model compares the NHLe of a prospect's 2022-23 season to that of their draft year season. This paints a hazy picture of the offensive progress they've made over the past season. I calculated the NHLe of every player's 2022-23 season and divided it by the NHLe of their draft year season. The further the resulting sum is from 1 indicates how much progress (or regression) they've made over the past season. If the number is more than 1, they've made progress. If it's less than 1, they've regressed. By this model's nature, the majority of prospects will have a total greater than 1, so here are some statistics to help indicate how good a total is.

For forwards, the median value is 1.18. The upper quartile is 1.56, and the lower quartile is 1.000 on the dot. Therefore, the majority of forwards fall into the range of 1 to 1.56. For defenders, the median value is 1.33. The upper quartile is 1.83, and the lower quartile is 0.98. Therefore, the majority of defenders fall into the range of 0.98-1.83.

In layman's terms, for forwards:

Well above average: More than 1.56
Above average: 1.18-1.56
Below average: 1.00-1.18
Well below average: Less than 1.00

And for defenders:

Well above average: More than 1.83
Above average: 1.33-1.83
Below average: 0.98-1.33
Well below average: Less than 0.98

I hope you enjoy! Feel free to ask any questions.

If you have any questions about any specific player's total, I'm happy to answer it. Some numbers truly reflect the progress they've made this season, while others are a little more complicated and there's alternative reasons to their total than just their production.

Some Habs fans think Slafkovsky had a bad season, but i think he played decent as an 18 years old. Happy to see NHLe model shows that too.

Love Adam Engstrom growth, i think he could be another top 4 D for MTL in a couple years.

I'm surprised Lane Hutson isn't in the "well above average" category.

NHLe stinks for predicting players that aren't one-dimensional, pure offense.

Hutson proly didn't have good d numbers, and played in a weaker league

I agree. A perfect example of this is the case of Ryan Chesley. Chesley is a phenomenal defensive defender who had quite a good season in the NCAA defensively. His offense has never been a strength, and this year, he fell in "well below average" because this simply measures point production and doesn't factor in any defensive statistics or advanced metrics. However, it is a really interesting way to see how players may have grown offensively by comparing across leagues, which NHLe allows you to do.

Lane Hutson is a very interesting case. He exploded offensively in the NCAA this year, and in my prior model, he was at the top of the list for "adjusted NHLe" among all players in this draft class. However, one thing to consider is a players' success in a prior season technically counts against them in this model. Hutson produced quite well for the USDP in his draft year, so the bar was set very high. He's definitely proven his value this season, despite him getting overlooked by the model.

Engstrom has definitely exceeded all expectations. He was utterly dominant during his stint in J20, and he looked quite good playing against grown men in the SHL, particularly in the latter half of the season and in the playoffs. He definitely has room to grow, as he sometimes makes questionable decisions with the puck, but his two-way play has been stellar and his value should be quite high.

Slafkovsky's number should be taken with a grain of salt. His draft year NHLe was lower than most others selected near him, so the bar was not very high for him to succeed in this model. Additionally, his transition to the NHL provides a little bit of an inflation to his NHLe. All of that said, he played very well for an 18 year old rookie and quite frankly, his value should have only increased after this season.

this is just about offensive growth, hutson killed ii too in his under 18 US program. he was drafted later because people didnt think his nunber would translate to ncaa. the fact that it did and that he even did better is amazing.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!!

There's actually an interesting reason for this. Since their NHLe from this past season is being compared to their draft year season, the worse their NHLe was during their draft year season, the lower the bar is for them to succeed in this model. Take Jackson Edward as an example. He tallied 6 points in 61 OHL games during his draft year, so while he nearly quadrupled his point total, he still only tallied 31 points in 84 OHL games this season. Since 7th rounders are more flyers than established prospects, it makes perfect sense that there would be more breakouts in the 7th round than in the rest of the draft.

A couple of the 7th rounders have alternative reasons for their growth. Kaleb Lawrence missed the majority of his draft year season and the entirety of the 2020-21 season, so to calculate his total, I had to go THREE years back to 2019-20. It makes sense that he would explode from where he was as a 16 year old.

Another 7th round breakout, Brennan Ali, was a high schooler in his draft year season, and high school students have a very low NHLe conversion and it's almost always that they have lower totals than they would in other leagues. Sam Rinzel is another example of this, as he played in high school during his draft year and his "well above average" status says more about his prior season than his play this season.

Context is needed for Nemec. He was so good in Slovakia that he broke NHLe models. His AHL season was still crazy good.
