Joseph Trade

Created by: SpinyLiving
Team: 2023-24 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 18, 2023
Published: Sep. 25, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Very little to explain here, lineups are almost identical to those in Hawks training camp. Ottawa is desperate for cap space, and instead of a 1st or Pinto like some teams are demanding Chicago takes Joseph for a former 1st round pick who's probably going to struggle to crack the Sens roster in Lassi Thompson, alongside a pick swap. With the Joseph trade, Raddysh gets bumped to the top line and Joseph slots into his spot as 3RW. Thompson makes the Hawks on the bottom pair in Zaitsev's spot, who gets waived.

I don't think he's waiver eligible.

This trade doesn't really fit the trend Davidson has set. 3 years at 3 mil should net the hawks a 2nd without giving up anything. If they wanna throw in Thompson they can but, as leafsfan98 said, there's no reason to pay for a guy that will most likely be on waivers pretty soon

Doesn't make much sense. You'll be able to get Thompson for free in a few weeks and Chicago is basically at the start of the line to claim him.

If Dorion was smart, he wouldn't have signed Hamonic and have Thomson as the 7th guy. The problem is BEFORE Andlauer, there was no emphasis on advanced stats but now with Sean Tierney, it's maybe the start of changes.

Sure Hamonic is tough as nails, stick for his teammates and leaves everything on the ice but the only reason he didn't get destroyed last season is due to the 20 y/o rookie Jake Sanderson.

Defense should be :

Chabot - Chychrun
Brannstrom - Zub
Sanderson - JBD
Thomson

Roll the 3 pairings about equally at ES, but of course boost Chabot, Sanderson and Chychrun ice-time with special teams and game situations. Yes that defense miss a bit of muscle but once Kleven is fully ready (need at least half a season in the AHL), you can trade Brannstrom (for a young forward) and run :

Chabot - Chychrun
Sanderson - Zub
Kleven - JBD
Thomson

Losing Thomson on waivers (if it happens) is just stupid but doesn't even sniff Dorion Top-20 blunders, unfortunately lol

Good investment for the Hawks, develop Thomson, give him some PP time and you might get a decent asset back later or use him for several years. Joseph will bounce back to his norm, scoring about 12 ES goals and 30 ES pts (if he plays close to 82 games) while being good defensively and one of the best PK forwards in the NHL. As the cap rises, his value will become positive again. You could even retain on him eventually to get a better return. Plus that pick upgrade.

And it's not that Thomson is "going to struggle to crack the Sens roster", it's just that there's no path for him to make the NHL via Ottawa

Thank you for being reasonable with your demands lol

Hawks should be able to get at a minimum a 2nd round pick for taking Joseph. Davidson has been able to get 2nd round picks for much less in the past.

Dickinson returned a 2nd for two years at $2.65m and they were able to dump Stillman’s $1.35m in the deal.

Zaitsev returned a 2nd and 4th round pick for 1 1/4 years at $4.5m.

Bailey returned a 2nd for 1 year at $5m which the Hawks bought out and will only pay him $3.83m over the next two years.

Given the current cap situation league wide, Chicago has the leverage in negotiations. The fact that they don’t need Joseph means they shouldn’t back down from demanding a 1st round pick or a prospect (Grieg) valued at that level.

If that's the hawks position then you can be sure no deal will happen, particularly if you look at how hungry Joseph is right now. Also, that's crazy to even mention Greig, he's worth more than your regular "first round pick", has been ranked in Top-50 prospect lists for a few years now

What would you think if your team was in a similar situation and an opposing fan said "they shouldn’t back down from demanding a 1st round pick or a prospect (Nazar) valued at that level"

I'm not pushing for this trade to happen by the way, it'd be fine but I hope they find a way to keep Joseph
