That's funny

When a player clears waivers, it means they aren't wanted on another NHL team, destroying their trade value.

Both players in this trade cleared waivers.

That means this trade amounts to a nothingburger for both teams.

Fair deal.

This trade seems strange on the surface because both players were waived recently, so the teams trading for them now could have had them for nothing. Why then did they wait until they had to give up something to get them? I believe the reason is that if you claim a player on waivers, you have to keep him on your NHL roster, and neither team wanted to commit to that. By waiting until they've cleared waivers, they can leave them in the minors until they need to call them up. Jones is probably closer to being an NHL player than Burke, but neither team is really giving up anything of value. It's depth at one position for depth at a different position.

Cal Burke has 2 career NHL games and is 26.

Jones is the same age and has 217 career games, including spending the past 3 seasons in the NHL.

Realistically, both guys aren’t very good. But Jones has more NHL upside than Burke. W for Colorado.

Side note: Jones signed his contract 2 months ago. Must be weird getting traded so soon.

Colorado wins, both players aren't great but Jones is at least a depth D, Burke is an AHLer

Colorado's D corps consists of Toews/Makar + Byram/Girard + Johnson/Manson.

That makes Jones either Colorado's 7th or 8th D, depending on how highly they value MacDermid in comparison.

If anything, Jones will spend the year either as a healthy scratch or as a roster player for the Eagles.

He will then depart as a UFA next year.

This trade is a nothingburger for both teams.

I’d rather have a 7D than a guy who is 5th or 6th forward call up option.

Bednar has said that he doesn’t want MacDermid playing D anymore. I wouldn’t consider him an option anymore unless someone gets hurt in warmups.

If you think the Avs have hit the jackpot with a waivers clearance 7D, then that's just dandy.

To each his own.

Where did I say that? Read through the comments again. I said that the Avs win this trade because Jones is a 7D and they gave up a career AHLer. It’s marginal, but the Avs still win. Not a hot take?

And I said that Jones cleared waivers and lost whatever trade value he had left because no NHL team wanted him on their roster permanently.

That shouldn't be a hot take either.

I'm sorry I didn't announce Colorado as the winner of the trade.

Better luck next time.

I agree that it's a small win for the Avs, and it seems to be the popular vote.

I'll rephrase what I said then.

If you think the Avs have won a trade that's actually a nothingburger, then that's just dandy.

There.

All better.

The funny thing of this trade is that BOTH players will be playing on the AHL Colorado Eagles, as the Canes don't have an AHL squad and have been loaning out players to other teams.

Caleb Jones' dad (Popeye) was an NBA player for the Denver Nuggets and that is actually where his brother (Seth) was born; but they had already moved on to Texas when Caleb was born.

Quote:
During his time with the Denver Nuggets, Popeye approached Joe Sakic, the legendary Colorado Avalanche player, seeking advice on introducing his sons to ice hockey. Sakic wisely recommended starting with skating lessons, as it was important of building a strong foundation.
