Two holes to fill

Created by: Taz
Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 12, 2023
Published: Oct. 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
IMO there would be 2 main spots where Hughes should look for an improvement.

Habs need a reel RW1 to play next to Caufield/Suzuki, Anderson is the best fit actually, but he would be at a better spot on a third line if Hughes could find another guy with top 6 potential that wouldn't cost too much acquire.
Options : Crouse, Debrusk (UFA), Wahlstrom, Kaliyev, Reinhart (UFA), Protas

They also need a 3C for next year if they trade Monahan at TDL. Dvorak is reliable defensively but lacks of speed, and is healthy prone.
Options : Monahan, Dvorak, Jost (UFA), Dellandrea, Luostarinen, Nicolas Roy, Freddy Gaudreau, Noah Cates, Filip Hallander, Lundestrom

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Roy, Nicolas
Additional Details:
For 2024-25 season, VGK have 16 players signed for 65m8. They need to sign Marchessault, Stephenson and 4-5 depht players with something like 18m. Roy is 4th center in the depht chart, Vegas could use that 4C for a cheaper player and saves some money.
VGK
  1. Mesar, Filip
  2. 2025 4th round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Habs could offer one of Mesar/Beck. MTL has too much small forward prospects in the pipe (Mesar, Beck, Farrell, Kidney) and already has Caufield and RHP in NHL. There is simply not enough space for all them to play NHL on the same team.

4th pick becomes a 2nd if Roy scores 20+ goals.
2.
MTL
  1. Kaliyev, Arthur [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
For 2024-25 season, LAK have 12 players signed for 64m9. They need to sign Arvidsson, Byfield, Kaliyev, maybe Roy, two goalies and couple depht players something like 19m.

I just don't think they can afford to raise Kaliyev.
LAK
  1. Allen, Jake ($1,925,000 retained)
  2. Tuch, Luke [Reserve List]
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Kaliyev is a big body winger, excellent wrist shot, excels on PP I think he's the type of guy that could complete well Suzuki/Caufield. He's still unproven so it'll be a risky move, but considering kings financial circumstances and the fact that Kaliyev is still unproven, Hughes could be able to buy low on him. Allen at 2m is probably still too high for LAK but it's only for one year, so it may be a good fit, also considering they have no goalie signed for 2024-25.

No thanks, Kaliyev's stock should jump this season paired with PLD and Fiala.

Both good targets to go after…but I’d think these teams, who are in their competitive windows, would want current assets/players instead of futures (if they moved their guys).

I don't see LA doing that, Arvidsson will likely test the free agency market, and that's will open somes space on the cap for Kaliyev.

One of VGKs main value is size and physicality. No way are they trading a fantastic middle-six center for us (2nd line for you) in Roy who is homegrown for another version of Brendan Brisson who can't crack a roster spot. And only a 4th to fill in the value? Even converted to a 2nd, the trade makes no sense for VGK, and the value still isn't there unless it was a high second (32-38OVR). Also, VGK isn't looking for picks. It's a top team in the league that would be looking for impact players. Also, with Roy still young and only getting better and some of VGK centers getting older, he's heir apparent to up to the 2C role behind Eichel in a few years.

Nothing in that package interests LA. Jake Allen doesn't have a track record to show he'd be a better option than either of the two guys currently on the roster, and even with retention he would be the most expensive goalie the Kings would have.

Not interested in Luke Tuch, currently, and we have enough players in the pipeline or signed to long-term deals that LW isn't an area that needs to be addressed.

If Laferriere continues his trajectory, I could see Kaliyev MAYBE being on the block if the Kings look to re-sign Arvidsson, but the player they'd be targeting would be someone like Xhekaj++ or Montembeault.

Cap next year is going to be $87.7M. That gives the Kings nearly $24 million to sign 7 players and 2 goalies (none of which will be due huge paydays). Plenty of money.

LA declines.

The cap is projected to go up to 87.5m next season which is 4m more than what it currently is. Kings will sign QB somewhere around 3m and Kali some where around 2.5m. Leaving them about 17m to sign a starting goalie somewhere around 6m and Roy somewhere around 5m. Leaving 6m or so for a back up tender and to fill out the 4th line. Kings are gonna be in a pretty good spot next year money wise as long as they don't do anything dumb.

MTL fans continue to push the Roy to come home agenda when he’s locked up in vegas lol
