Fixing the D

Created by: Rajvinder

Description
Any suggestions on who can fill that #2 hole on D with the $2.5M left?
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Hakanpää, Jani
  2. Stankoven, Logan
Additional Details:
For Dallas:

Liljegren has all the tools to be a #2D. He has shown long periods of playing that quality of hockey (particularly November to January of last season) but it just seems like Keefe doesn't trust him and that negatively impacts his game. With a new coach and system he could be playing alongside Miro by the end of the year. Before Dallas fans shit on him, pick any random game from November to January of last year, he's exactly what Dallas is missing. Now can he consistently do that? That is the question if he could he'd be manning Toronto's top D pair.

Robertson to Dallas is wildly overdone but he needs a fresh start. Dallas also needs cheap players they can call up and his brother is there so it works on a few levels.

Why does Dallas move these guys?

Jim Nill has ALWAYS had a top 5 team in both height and weight. The fact that Stankoven was even given a serious look this year shows how love Dallas values him relative to the rest of the league. I'd be shocked if he's still there in 3 years.
DAL
  1. Liljegren, Timothy
  2. Robertson, Nicholas
Additional Details:
For Toronto:

Stankoven adds to center depth in the prospect pool and is better than Robertson (at least more valuable today). With Tavares aging that top 6 C depth is going to matter.

Hakanpaa isn't as good as Lili to be honest but like Lyubushkin before him he is good at playing D and that's it. Honestly at this stage Toronto should value having a few D like this even at the cost of better all round players.

Why does Toronto Move these guys?

Both just need a fresh start to reach their potential.
2.
TOR
  1. Garland, Conor ($2,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Vancouver adds a 2nd to get someone to retain 50% of Brodie so they end up clearing $1.45M in cap space while swapping Garland for Brodie.
VAN
  1. Brodie, TJ
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
  3. 2024 4th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
$1M of Garland is retained by Vancouver the other $1M by a third team who gets the 3rd and 4th from Toronto.

Swap Garland for Brodie straight up and send your picks to someone else to retain if you want.

Yep nothing like trading two superior Dman for one inferior Dman to make the defence better.

So you are taking over for those two chuckle heads who came on here daily to post terrible leaf trades eh? Fixing the d by taking out two good players and replacing them with a 3rd pair 6/7 guy is real smart

Stars aren't trading Stankoven for a question mark on the blue line. Liljegren has shown flashes, but can't work his way into more time on a lackluster defensive unit in Toronto. Dallas already has a player like that in Nils Lundkvist.

If Dallas is trading their top prospect, it's going to be for a bonafide top-4 defensemen that can step in and give a serious boost to their blue line.

Nill hasn't been in the business of trading away his top prospects, and I don't see it happening with Stankoven. You make a great point that Dallas needs cheap talent that they can use to fill out the roster, due to a couple of large contracts. Stankoven fills that role as well, so that point is moot.

You also make the comment that "Nill always has a top-5 team in both height and weight" & then you have him trading a 5'8 Stankoven (and a 6'6 Hakanpaa) for a 5'9 Robertson. Your comment literally contradicts itself when you look at the sizes of the players you have in your trade.

Dallas isn't trading a Stankoven-caliber prospect for Liljegren & I'm not sure why Toronto would want to replace Liljegren with Hakanpaa, who is objectively the worse defenseman.
