Initial Creation Date: Dec. 8, 2023
Published: Dec. 8, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If we are in this spot near the TDL, I think we would be better off selling and trying to get our top 10 protected pick back. The Stamkos trade is really unlikely because I doubt he waives but if he did then selling him would help the tank and the future. I also don't think JBB is going to be willing to put up the cash necessary in the offseason to sign him and we will lose him for free like Killorn and Palat. I put the prospects in the lineup to get them some experience and help the tank. If we are winning too many games we could make Johansson a tandem with Vasy and put ABB on the top line, etc.

I can hear both yes and no from Detroit.
Yes; it's a good deal for a very good player.
No; Stamkos is going to be 34 and trading a 1st + a very good prospect for some guy who's likely out of the league in a few years would be awful asset management considering Detroit's position/build.

He said he wants to play 20 years so you would have him for 5 years and it is also a late first. Wallinder also hasnt had the best start to the season but that is kinda a mute point because Im sure he will bounce back

They are Top 10 protected so if Tampa is a bottom 10 team this year then both the chicago and nashville picks will automatically get pushed back a year

Pretty sure this is assuming the Lightning pick is in the top 10 so the conditions would swap those picks to the following years.

I mean, I'm certainly not expecting Stamkos to keep pace over the next 5 years. Age is the hardest thing to overcome in the NHL.
As for Wallinder; yeah I'm aware. Seems like all of the prospects fresh to pro NA hockey are stumbling (Kasper, Wallinder, Lombardi, Mazur). In comparison, the three best prospects on the team played pro NA hockey last year (Edvinsson, Johansson, Cossa). My guess is just adjustments.

Pretty sure the Hawks are not trading a pick in the teens to low 20's (the scenerio where the Lightning would wave the white flag on the season) without getting a sweetner to do it for a pick a draft year later. Hawks are trying add building blocks to a rebuild and pushing those back a year on the development curve is not happening for free.

I haven't followed detroits prospects that closely this season but I have really liked what I have seen from Red Savage for what its worth.

This would be a scenario in which Tampa ends the season as a bottom 10 team and the pick is top 10 protected you wouldnt have a choice

I think that scenario is unlikely with ONLY trading Stamkos.

I didnt only trade stamkos, I added 6 prospects to the roster and I said that we could put ABB on the top line and/or make Johansson a tandem with vasy if we need to tank harder. We are also only 3 spots out of the bottom 10 currently if you count by points percentage and Kuch is having an other worldy season which will probably slows down

So you are going to waste a year of your roster to draft a player in the top 10 this year that in all likelihood doesn't see the roster for 2-3 years minimum?

I was saying in the description if we are in the same position we are in now by the trade deadline, obviously we should continue to try until then but if we have a .518 points percentage by the trade deadline then we are not making the playoffs so we might as well sell

I'm glad he's breaking out. Sick name.
But on that team, I'm a huge fan of Augustine.

Augustine has been impressive, especially for a freshman. Excited to see him in the WJC

Tampa's pick will not be top 10 barring some serious ping pong ball luck. I'll be more than happy for it to be in the teens again though.

I wouldnt be so sure, it wouldnt take lottery luck either as of right now they have a .518% and my acgm was saying to sell if they have that same record by the TDL. By adding 6 ready prospects into the lineup, losing stamkos, and a few other things we could do, a top 10 pick is very plausible. Currently we are only 3 spots away from the bottom 10 by points percentage and Kucherov has been having an other worldy season which will probably slow down some. We currently have a 29% chance of making the playoffs so not as unlikely as it seems

The pick that Detroit owns, Boston's, has conditions on it already in the trade with Ottawa. So that wouldn't work out.

I agree. Not giving up that much for a 34yr old. The he will sign an extension bit is getting old because it rarely happens like that.

Given TBL's philosophy in recent years, I doubt they punt on this season or tear it down, even if they do miss the playoffs. But, and I think we've talked about this before, if they did want to do a tear down, they could probably recoup a ton of assets.

tampa hasnt been this bad since JBB took over though, every year at the deadline JBB added because we were either a contender or in a wildcard spot. There is also a lot of incentives to be bad this year so it will be interesting to see what he does

If Tampa's 2024 1st round pick (owned by the Hawks) DOES land in the Top 10, I believe the Hawks then would get TBL's UNPROTECTED 2025 1st round pick, right? In that case, odds are very high that Tampa will be MUCH worse then - in the throes of their teardown - making that 2025 1st round pick MUCH better for the Hawks.

Teardowns and rebuilds are ugly and take a lot of time; no way the Lightning turn into a playoff team the following year! TBL would be taking a BIG gamble that they'll be better next season, than this one.

I dont think they will be worse next season, a lot of the prospects will be seeing ice time next season on their value ELC's and vasy will be there the entire season. Also most of the lightnings problems have been structural issues so if jeff blashill (the defensive assistant coach) gets fired then they will be much better. The cap is also going up and by not resigning stamkos they will be able to make a splash in the FA pool.
