Most would be ecstatic if a 2nd round pick turned into a Kovacevic type player but don't want to move one for him lol heaven forbid we want an honest return for our roster.

Many do not understand the pick % for NHLers through the rounds ... Our community lacks the sense or the awareness of the value per se market. Too much sensitivity or overusing stats or cash down, when the team's needs are a big factor.

Kovacevic is underrated. He has a positive goal differential (+3) at even strength despite 70% dzone starts (on Montreal).
He kills penalties and his cap hit is below what you'd expect for what he provides and it carries through next year, meaning Montreal does not need to move him.
He's also young enough to be worth keeping around beyond that and may not have hit his ceiling as a late bloomer.
Two years at a minimal cap hit is worth the 2nd (the 7th is inconsequential).

A smart GM will pick him up and that team will be happy with the trade eventually.

You really wanna go down on how much and how long said skill/talent offers value? Drafting is a thing but development and team window is also to be included in such calculation. I wouldn't say that those coming guys do not bring something but the time between the draft and the moment they reach a profitable moment should ring a bell for you ...

Your 30% hit rate is kinda vague here. from round 1 rank 1 to 12, we're at a 65% chance to hit the league with a greater talent/skill, from 12 to 25 we're at something like 45%, and 25+ less than 30% but as ranks fall the curve of talent skill also downgrade. So yeah they can bring a whole lot of things to a team and contribute but for how long and with what consistency?
