Since when does a bottom pairing defender cost a 2nd and a 7th lol?

Marco Scandella, Brett Kulak, Grandlund, literal depth players for playoffs get a 2nd all the time.

I think people forget that 2nd round picks have like a 30% chance of playing in the NHL and even then have like 15% chance of playing more than 200 games.

All three trades you mentioned were immediately criticized as having paid too much.

Granlund? They guy who Pens fans couldn't usher to SJ fast enough? He shouldn't be someone you bring up as a point in your favor.

Most would be ecstatic if a 2nd round pick turned into a Kovacevic type player but don't want to move one for him lol heaven forbid we want an honest return for our roster.

Many do not understand the pick % for NHLers through the rounds ... Our community lacks the sense or the awareness of the value per se market. Too much sensitivity or overusing stats or cash down, when the team's needs are a big factor.

Kovacevic is underrated. He has a positive goal differential (+3) at even strength despite 70% dzone starts (on Montreal).
He kills penalties and his cap hit is below what you'd expect for what he provides and it carries through next year, meaning Montreal does not need to move him.
He's also young enough to be worth keeping around beyond that and may not have hit his ceiling as a late bloomer.
Two years at a minimal cap hit is worth the 2nd (the 7th is inconsequential).

A smart GM will pick him up and that team will be happy with the trade eventually.

Value I guess is fine from Isles POV but I don’t think Monahan is a target for us. Depends on Pulock’s injury status. If he’s out a while I can see isles chasing another d-man

You spout these numbers all the time but when a draft pick hits you get 7 years of value from them until they hit UFA.

30% hit rate, but when they do hit they provide immense value to a team

You really wanna go down on how much and how long said skill/talent offers value? Drafting is a thing but development and team window is also to be included in such calculation. I wouldn't say that those coming guys do not bring something but the time between the draft and the moment they reach a profitable moment should ring a bell for you ...

2 texts on the draft pics values :

1 - Valuation of NHL Draft Picks using Functional Data Analysis
2 - What‟s An NHL Draft Pick Worth? A Value Pick Chart for the National Hockey League

If you look on Google there is also a 3rd link but it is an auto download the text is named : «Mining NHL Draft Data and A New Value Pick Chart»

Your 30% hit rate is kinda vague here. from round 1 rank 1 to 12, we're at a 65% chance to hit the league with a greater talent/skill, from 12 to 25 we're at something like 45%, and 25+ less than 30% but as ranks fall the curve of talent skill also downgrade. So yeah they can bring a whole lot of things to a team and contribute but for how long and with what consistency?

It's hard to answer but again research offers perspective here

Go have fun reading the papers and come back to us with your enlightenment about it. GMs have a huge math problem with this, and with our huge sensitivity as fans, we elude too much of this kind of logic and therefore miss the value by a lot.

Yes, I do spout them a lot, but I also add that we have to value the context as much too, which is different from many here, even if too many time I'm playing the fantasy game.

We would like to keep him but we have younger player like Reinbacher Xhekaj Mailloux Hutson to make the teams in the next 2 years.

We already have Guhle Barron Harris Struble as 23 yo or younger with team.

I'd love to but we simply have too many D.
Sacrifices have to be made somewhere, so get value where you can.
Savard is an option, but his higher cap hit and experience are factors. Teams can't afford him as easily and we can still use his experience.
