The Brendan Smith effect

Description
As the hockey world has heard Connor Bedard is out with a broken jaw due to a hit from Brendan Smith. Because of the hit Nick Foligno had to handle business and get into a scrap with Smith resulting in a broken finger. Would the hit of happened if CHI had a guy like one of these on the ice or on the bench at the time? These are necessarily the toughest guys in the NHL but expendable tough guys that teams in need of star protection should be looking at. Like I said there are other tough guys on teams like Zadorov Lucic Evander Kane Trouba etc. however those guys wont be made available by their teams. Haven't teams learned this lesson with McDavid at the beginning of his career....... and don't even get me started with Crosby.

Brendan Smith isn’t afraid to fight. He isn’t changing his game with any of these guys on the ice. I haven’t seen the hit but I know Smith doesn’t have the mentality of “I’m going to break his jaw with this hit”. He plays physical and sometimes lines are crossed when players play physically. Not intentionally crossed, just crossed. Some of these players may help detour some hits but not all.

Clean hit Brendan smith lays that no matter who’s on the ice. Not letting bedard walk in on a power play

Yes, the hit still would have happened because it wasn't a predatory hit at all. He stepped up into Bedard and it was just an unfortunate result of a solid check on a guy reaching for the puck that he wound up with a broken jaw.

Smith was elbow tight to the body, wasn't chasing the hit, and didn't leave his feet.
Bedard was low and reaching while looking at the puck in open ice trying to get through defenders.

It's a lesson young players need to learn. Preferably before they get rocked. You can't carry the puck through players with your head down in the NHL. Sometimes you have to let the puck go in order to protect yourself.

Why because trouba wouldn’t have answered the bell?

Huh?! Trouba would have hit him harder for starters. What’s this not answering the bell garbage?

Guys guys guys if I'm miss leading you into thinking I'm saying it was a dirty hit or something I don't mean to, it was a clean hit through the body with an unfortunate outcome similarly to Dennis Gilbert the other night. I'm asking if a designated tough guy was present at the time would Smith have just tried to poke the puck off his stick? Or still try to bury a guy?

He didn’t try to bury him tho. He didn’t leave his feet, or skate into the hit. Unfortunate location and **** happens in a violent sport when you have no padding on your chin.

Smith could have made that much much worse.

Yeah, the point we're making is that it wasn't the kind of hit that tough guys deter. It was just a simple check that you don't expect to lead to a guy getting hurt. You just kinda expect to knock him over at worst and he gets up and the game carries on.

Like that’s really the bare minimum of an open ice hit. Didn’t leave his feet and didn’t skate into it. **** happens

The answer is no. Wilson and Reaves could be on the wing for him and smith is finishing his hit.

It was not a dirty hit or even that hard of a hit. It just caught Bedard in wrong spot.

It’s not a hit that most guys have to ‘answer the bell’ for. A couple of guys approached Smith earlier in game and he did not engage. But he accepted when Foligno came up to him before a face-off and said, “you gotta give me one”.

But in general, I think NHL does a lousy job protecting its stars. They should take more active role…especially for hits that may be clean, but have intent to injure…or are retaliatory (such as Murphy jumping Hischier when he didn’t have puck).

I just watched it, it was a clean hit and wasn't even very hard.

No one on the Hawks should have retaliated at all.

This generation of NHLers gets this type of stuff COMPLETELY WRONG!

I see star players getting away with **** all the ****ng time, I'd say the league protects their stars just fine, protecting everyone and being even in their suspensions and reffing is where they fail big time.
