If the Pens miss the playoffs or are 1 and done

Description
If the Pens either miss the playoffs or get booted in the 1st round, I feel like there is a lot of moves that can be made to try and be better next year. Obviously, this can change if players start playing to their potential. Jarry is a BIG question mark and Ned has proven to be more consistent this year. So you make him the starter and bring MAF back for 1 year so he can retire as a Penguin like he should. Rust is the only player that needs to be moved solely so the Pens can resign Guentz. The other players just aren't performing well so if they can be moved, even for 5th-7th Rd picks, I feel that those salaries need to get off the books so new players can be brought in (and hopefully some prospects). I feel that Blueger is a piece that is missing from the bottom 6 and on the PK. Hanifin and DeMelo make the D much better than this year. Especially the 3rd pair. Do the moves make the team better??? I don't know. I thought this current team would be in a better position than their are this year, so who knows.

There’s a major difference between missing again and a one and done. If it’s one and done management is going to go all in again next season. If we miss again then all bets are off.

yea wasn't sure what to do for him. With the cap bump next year I can imagine that players are going to be looking for top dollar. If we can get him for less I'll take it.

agreed......and if the Pens make it to the 2nd round or beyond, obviously this current team is on the right track. For me it's all about performance. Sometimes I'm watching the game and certain players are just going through the motions. That can't happen.

How is Jarry a big question mark? He's had a good season and a good career overall. And that trade is horrendous. I would say the bigger question mark is making your starting goalie a guy who has looked fantastic as a backup, but woefully underperformed in the only year he was a starter - and then backing him up with a 40 year old goalie who has been terrible this year. I get the story of brining back MAF is great - but if you're trying to win that move just can't be made.

Also, Rust doesn't need to be moved to re-sign Guentzel. He also has an NMC.

Overall I'd say the forward group and goaltending is worse, defense is better. Pretty big overpay on Debrusk, and I dont like the idea of spending 4.5mil on 3rd pair dman. Maybe move some of that money towards another forward. Just my thoughts

For me Jarry just isn't consistent. He's either getting a shutout or letting in 3 terrible goals. Now granted the D in front of him isn't spectacular, but goalies can lose games just as much as they can win them. And Ned may not be a good starter but I didn't see any upcoming goalie UFA's that would be any better so maybe you switch him and MAF as MAF seems to do better in a starting role than a backup. But he can't play 60+ games anymore. So maybe it's 45-50 games for MAF.

Even half of that is an overpay for him. 3M max

I am the first to admit I am not a Jarry fan and I wanted them to let him walk… however he has been very good so far and if we were going straight rebuild I’d look to move him to someone like Edmonton. Otherwise we honestly aren’t going to find a better goalie via UFA and a trade for a guy like Saros could look really dumb when we’re in a rebuild in a few years.

You have a goalie with a .912 save percentage in this league with the state of goaltending. I wouldn't just toss that away

Eh - I think that's a bit blown out of proportion imo, especially for this year. It's fair to ask him to be more consistent, I won't argue there, but I don't think it makes him a big question mark. Has he even had more than one game letting in 3 terrible goals this year? The only game I've missed this year is the TOR game, so that's the only one I can't speak on, but for the rest I don't think there's been more than one. I fully agree there aren't any good UFA goalies for next season - but to me that's even more of a reason to keep Jarry. Especially if you're going to get a terrible return like that. If you traded him for an NHL player that could help the team win now, I would be open to it. I will say goalies are weird and incredibly hard to predict, and there is obviously a chance that Ned gets the starting job and continues his great play. I will admit that I was wrong on Ned when they signed him and he has been absolutely amazing. I just don't like taking that risk - and if you were to take that risk, I would want a very good backup just in case. MAF is not that at this point in his career imo. And he's definitely not a starter on a team that wants to contend. If this was for a rebuild then I could understand it

Guentzel is getting $9M for 6-7 years on the market. After Nylander signed he's the biggest name on the market.

Really hoping he gives the Pens a little bit of a discount. But yes after the Nylander deal, he could easy get $9-$10+ from another team.

IF the Pens miss it could be the right time to melt the team down and start again, while there is some value left in the players to get back picks and prospects. Given Dubas bet on Karlsson I'm guessing he runs it back again next year and possibly the year after, until Crosby et al aren't worth a bag of chips.

Bruins will be able to add that 8th year to get the AAV down or match. 7 is waaay too much and he's been their most consistent forward since the break so I wouldnt be surprised if contract talks pick up again soon. MIght not be on the market by the offseason, but who knows
