24 Deadline

Initial Creation Date: Jan. 23, 2024

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Monahan (easily) and Hopefully Savard should be able to fetch a first round pick this off season. If MTL eats 50% of monahan deal, almost any team should be able to squeeze 950k into there lineup..... Plus Jeanott, Folingo, Coleman, Savard, Chariot all got 1st round picks over the last few years, and Monahan is probably one of the better ones in that list, and savard could be a reliabable D option for teams

Assume Colarado and Tampa would be interested for a guy that can wins draws and play up/down a lineup...... And not sure what team would be interested in a top 4D, so using Edmonton in this case

You can't have more than 3 retained salary

Savard isn’t gonna get you a first he’s a bottom pairing defensemen no chance and Edmonton doesn’t need him he isn’t an upgrade over Ceci.

It’s funny to me how Habs fans really believe these guys are gonna return a 1st

You’re over the retention limit. I also wouldn’t say either easily gets a first especially without taking on bad salary back. For starters you’d probably have to take back RyJo for Monahan

Friedman today said he doesn’t think Monahan will get a first and teams don’t think he’s a 2c avs shouldn’t be the one to go for Monahan

Colorado requires their centers be above average skaters.

RyJo is struggling in Colorado primarily bc he's a below average skater.

Monahan is a worse skater than RyJo.

This isn't a fit, no matter how much Montreal fans believe it is.

"I would say a) it depends on how many teams are interested and b) it also depends on what the chances are of a team being interested to re-sign him," Friedman explained. "I would say the base line he's probably not a guy they get a first-rounder for unless a team wants to extend him or there's such a race for him it pushes it up into that first round range."

Link with relevant passage.

Bolded is the factor in play. Is there enough competition to raise the price.

How many teams are looking for a 2C that will be in it at the deadline, we know that Boston, Vancouver and Colorado are definitely looking...

There is lindholm, henrique, Jenner, monahan, johansen, and frost on the market for sure.. then you have guys like hertl, zegras, giroux, roslovic, konecney, and others who are less talked about but possible trade candidates.

Doesn't sound like at this point that there will be a frenzy for monahan... that could change but he's a terrible fit for this colorado team

He’s not a 2c and he absolutely wouldn’t be extended by us. Hes not going to the avalanche. How many suitors are really gonna want him as a 3rd liner anyway? Panthers lightning and maybe the devils even though he’s really not a skating fit for the devils. Thats about it not much of a bidding war there

How many of those have a cap hit less than $1M?
Monahan is an option for every team. The rest are only options for maybe a couple of teams.
Teams can make additional moves to fit more cap, but there will be extra costs attached.
Monahan doesn't require a lot of hoops. Send a pick, get the player, swap him in.

And because of this, I see TB being a dark horse. Great fit in the line up, great fit under the cap, GM known to throw picks for depth, maybe a cheap replacement for Stamkos, generally just a good move to keep other contenders to get him...

And EDM would take ANY kind of low hit depth...

For a premium sure, or they throw a 5th at someone to retain salary.. send a guy down, or pull a toronto and put someone on LTIR for no reason.. seems like a buyers market at this point
