I am honestly wondering why Treliving signed Ryan Reaves. What the he** was his justification for that?

It's going to cost TOR to dump Reaves.

That's an overpay for Brodie, and why would NSH add him? To keep Barrie company in the press box?

The cost to dump Reaves is McMann.

And Nashville is in a playoff spot. They might ship out Barrie and bring in another defenceman to take his place.

A competent GM is okay with losing out on his services at that contract.

His first 2 UFA signings were a 36 year old Ryan Reaves who never mind cant play hockey, but cant get out of bed without his knees popping out and Klingberg who had hip issues his whole career

Doesn't make sense...send him to the minors and he's only $200k on the cap. Unless the leafs aren't planning on keeping McMann..then it makes more sense to just waive Reaves and send him down...or the acquiring team shouldn't have to be compensated that much for a $200k cap hit

I am sorry for seeming snarky seriously but did you type that with a straight face? wink I bet they (or any team) could have waited it out and signed him on a PTO in the summer...

Treliving is probably scared Reaves would punch him in the face if he dared...

Trading him is about removing a distraction from the team. Reaves will moan more if sent down and he'll probably won't even report. Treliving has to find a team that will take him and play him.

agreed that he probably doesn't report....still doesn't change the fact that it's an overpayment to remove someone you're making assumptions will be a distraction. If he gets waived and no teams pick him up...it's either time for retirement or time to keep your mouth shut and keep collecting a paycheque

How is that an over pay? 2nd is what he is worth not saying NSH makes sense as a destination

    My theory...

Shammy wanted to run it back.

Beating Tampa made him think the Leafs were close to winning a Cup.

Problem is the players they wanted to bring back didn't want to come back.

    ROR, Schenn and Acciari.

So Shammy's newly hired puppet had to panic buy.

Sign a UFA. Any UFA to show Leafs Nation "hey we're trying!"

That's where Face Puncher Reaves comes in.

They even signed him for 3 years!

Was any other team really going to sign the regressing Klingberg?

    Probably not.

But let's flush another 4 mil down the toilet. 🙄

Tree did get Bert and Domi the next day on take it or leave it deals.

Bert overplayed his hand thinking his excellent playoff would parlay into a long term deal. Wrong.

So he settled with the Leafs on a 1 year deal.

Everyone knew Domi wanted badly to be a Leaf.

So of course he accepted Tree's offer.

Most of Leafs Nation ate it up and Shammy sold his latest sham.

Signing Reaves would eventually cost them Lafferty who is doing quite well with first place Vancouver.🤔

So now puppet Tree is left with glaring holes on defense and a big question mark in goal.

He still has questionable depth in his bottom 6 lines.

But when you have Matthews scoring goals each game you can still win right?

I think you're pretty close on most of this....at least the first half, anyway.

Treliving came in kind of on short notice...so likely wanted to keep the team competitive while not locking himself into any expensive long term deals until he had a better feel for the roster. I'm sure the Shanny pressure is real...under normal circumstances you'd think a GM coming in year 1 would not feel the need to make and immediate push but I gotta think Shanny has he finger on the scale here.

Nothing justifies a 3yr deal for Reaves at anything above league min. Nor the dollar amount given to Klingberg...I can't imagine there was that much demand for him....we got lucky with his season-ending injury which turned it into a mulligan...but those two signings..which were Day 1 signings...looked awful immediately.

The cost to dump multiple years of Reaves is half a season of a 27 year old fringe roster player? Guys like McMann can be had for free on waivers all the time.

If NSH is somehow able to trade Barrie, they aren't going to give up a 2nd to bring in someone else to scratch. They have multiple NHL ready prospects cooling their heels with the Ads. Playoff spot or not, this isn't the year for NSH to be deadline buyers, and Barrie doesn't really improve their team anyway.

It was a big improvement over signing Huberdeau at 10.5m X 8 or Kadri 7m X 7. Maybe Treliving is learning though I doubt it.

Leafs' locker room was quiet. Reaves was brought in to be rowdy and wake them up, build chemistry, etc.

You can’t be defending RR as a day one signing? BT couldn’t have waited a week? C’mon

Would it just not be easier for the Leafs doctors to just make up another Reaves injury?
