Devils don't need the retention. Probably wouldn't go with the ECF condition. Don't need Nieto either.

I don't believe Lekkerimäki is completely off the table, but if he is traded it will be for a younger player with term or RFA status, not UFA.

Deadline rentals don't get the kind of return you have here for Guentzel, even the best players available.

If VAN (or any team honestly) acquires Guentzel, they’ll probably try to resign him

Go back and check last deadlines…as I’ve done… there are several lesser quality players that got most of that… plus Guentzel is the only major winger available

I’ve made a lot of offers for Pettersson lol so I don’t really remember either. All in the same range/approximate value. Really just about finding pieces that work for both Pitt and Jersey tbh (of course I’m not the GM so it all means nothing but oh well

By all means list them here. What you might notice is that the best players available in any given season all fetch around the same price across seasons, it doesn't matter how good they are compared to each other just that they are the best available. The only ones who fetch this kind of price are ones who have either term or extensions in place upon being traded. The idea that Guentzel is the only 'major winger' available is non-sense too. Tarasenko and Toffoli aren't all that far behind him in scoring while playing a lot less ice time. Pacioretty has had a good start in Washington too after not playing for 2 seasons. He should be expected to keep on improving.

That is not true at all lol. Giroux was a pending UFA and got a 1st, a 3rd, and top prospect. And that was with Giroux having a NMC and picking where he went.

Which would be significantly less than what is shown here. Calling Tippett a 'top prospect' at that point is a stretch. It was his 3rd NHL season and he had never had much success. He wasn't even eligible for Calder consideration anymore. To turn this into the Giroux trade, you'd be dropping the 2nd to a 3rd and taking Lekkerimäki, who might be the biggest piece of the trade on the Vancouver side, out entirely and delaying the 1st round pick. That's the gap and it's a very significant leap.

This might sound depressing but I have a feeling Canucks might do this deal with the Penguins.

Because Giroux had significantly less value for a multitude of reasons. Giroux was 34 at the time of the trade, Jake would be 29. Giroux had a full NMC so the flyers had very little leverage. Jake has a 12 team NTC so there would absolutely be bidding war for him. Jake already has more goals and more points in 12 less games than Giroux has at the time of trade. Tippet absolutely was a top prospect. He was only 21 or just turned 22 at the time of the trade and was already getting significant nhl time. It was also only his 2nd nhl season. He played 7 games, which doesn’t count as an nhl season. Then he played 40 something games the following season which was considered his rookie season. So to sum it up, the reason there’s a significant leap in this trade to the Giroux trade is because you’re getting a better player with much more trade value.

And the part you ignored completely is that better players don't necessarily get more from season to season at the deadline. The best players available are always worth in the same ballpark regardless of how they might compare to each other across seasons. Short of having term or an extension in place Guentzel is just the best winger available, not a player who is better than XYZ from part seasons. Use the Giroux example and then go back and look for players who got significantly more than him at the deadline, like this trade, who didn't have term of some fashion in place when traded.

To give you an example this trade highly resembles the Timo Meier trade to New Jersey last season. Meier was the top winger and a player of Guentzel's caliber, etc. He was traded as an RFA, with a minimum of 2 seasons, to the Devils. Term is what pushed his value up to this level.
