BIg Buffalo Trade

Description
thoughts on this trade?

Boston uses their amazing goaltending depth to improve their C.
Buffalo get a legit starting goalie with their forward depth.

I just thought of this trade now. Does either team consider? Who or what needs to be added?

Don't pay attention to the lines. Feel free to tell me what the Boston lines should look like if you want though!

Seems rich for a goalie but I think Buffalo considers it. Wonder where that leaves Levi.

Levi just turned 22. We don't see most goalies until they are 24. It gives him more time to develop. Having him AND Swayman is a great problem to have.

I don’t believe Boston makes that deal. Teams that have goalies that have displayed this talent at this age generally don’t trade the younger one when they have two

Fortunately for the Sabres, they won't have any problem since Swayman won't be traded.

What?

Swayman and UPL are equivalent. Why are the Sabres adding a top-10 F in the NHL in 5v5 points + a 2nd???

We already gifted BOS Ullmark, we're not gifting BOS Mitts too.

The trade is awful. Who gives up a top C + a goalie for a same goalie?

You might be the only person alive who things UPL and Swayman are the same goalie or on the same level.

Mits is a #2C by the way. He is not a top centre.

The package is solid youngish #2C + good young back up goalie + early 2nd for a young top 10 goalie in the world.

Alright, let's hear your take. How are Swayman and UPL the same, state your evidence. I'll grab my popcorn.

BOS goalies boast good numbers behind a good structured team D. That is obvious. UPL, by the way, has a .937 sv% going back to Jan 1, when he took over the starting job...Swayman? .912.

Mitts currently leads the Sabres in 5v5 TOI. He's also only behind these players in 5v5 points going on the past year+ (Since dec 9 2022):

1. MacK - 95
2. Pasta - 78
3. McD- 77
4. Kuch - 76
5. Point - 75
6. Rantanen - 71
7. Pettersson- 69
8. Matthews- 68
9. Mittelstadt - 67

The trade makes ZERO sense for the Sabres. ZERO.

We're getting a goalie who is playing worse on a much better team, plus giving a top-10 F in points, plus a top-40ish pick. In what world?

Using a sample size since January 1st doesn't make sense. Swayman's entire career has outperformed UPL substantially. Yes Boston has good structure, but Swayman is a top 10 goalie world wide.

As for Mitts, that's great he is producing at 5 on 5. He plays a ton on the PP also and isn't generating there. If Mitts is any teams number one centre, they will be a perennial bottom 7 team. He is still a solid player but he is not a "Top Centre". He is a good #2 C.

So you're evidence that UPL and Swayman are equivalent is Boston plays defense good and a 7 game sample size for UPL which includes 1 game vs Anaheim, 1 game vs a Bedard-less Chicago, and two games against San Jose. There's cherry picking data, and then there's THAT

I know it won't ever happen, but switch UPL and Swayman...Put Swayman on the Sabres and there won't be any difference. Literally none, maybe even worse.

And it's more than 7 games.

Question: Did Ullmark suddenly become a markedly better goalie in BOS, winning a Vezina in the process. Or was he just playing behind a better team?

I'm a fan of both Ullmark and UPL, but I don't see any difference.

The Sabres d core is not good defensively, their centers are not good defensively, and any positive strides that the coach's defensive system has made, has completely sucked the life out of a team that excelled scoring off the rush last year. The Sabres d is prone to frequent giveaways, puck watching, and not clearing the crease in any meaningful way. That leads to high danger chances. Ullmarks last season here, he had a .917 save percentage, which was fairly impressive given the support he got. He went to Boston and won a vezina. For me, I'm fixing the team in front of the goalie first.

Fair enough! I can't argue with this. And yes I was very high on Ullmark when he was with Buffalo. I thought that was a big loss when he left.

You’re right and Vancouver got the #9 pick which was Bo Horvat for him. That was considered a deep draft as well. If Luongo had a more tradable contract, I wonder if it would have but they ended up getting Markstrom for him
