So...
Johnson half retained might get one 3rd, but not two.
Hawks aren't trading Dickinson after signing him to his extension. Hawks decline that Toronto trade. McMann isn't worth a 3rd + Blackwell. Take Beau out of the Pens trade and Hawks probably accept. Nobody is paying anything for Sanford. Hawks will be lucky to get a 6th for Tinordi. Megna costs at least a 5th. He's been solid since coming to Chicago.

Why would the pens give you the better player, having the better season, AND add a 4th round pick? That makes no sense.

No that’s not all it takes, Dickinson was just extended Hawks aren’t trading him.

Well there is this thing called the salary cap, the Penguins are up against it and need to free up room, Chicago ain’t helping out of the kindness of their hearts.

Not after his extension earlier this year. $4.25m for a guy with a career high of 30 points... no thanks.

So then why are we taking a cap dump back? It’s not much help if we are taking almost the same amount of cap back lol. And since when do the pens need cap space this year? Or next year for that matter? The pens currently have almost 4 million in cap space right now with Jake on LTIR and have been cap compliant all year.

Come on man, just try thinking a bit. Beauvillier has a cap hit of $4.15m for the remainder of this season, then he is an FA. Smith’s contract at $5m runs through the end of next season. That frees up the prorated share of $815,000 for the remainder of this season and the full $5m next season for the Penguins. That’s why the Penguins give up the 4th round pick even though they are giving up the better player, who by the way has shown a decreased productivity this season. A turnaround in his play is unlikely given he turns 33 at the beginning of April.

Don’t worry though, a 4th pick isn’t enough inducement for the Hawks to make this trade unless they need another contract to reach the cap floor. Even then the Penguins will get very little in return from Chicago, it will be similar to the Taylor Hall trade last offseason.

But Smith isn’t a cap dump. He’s on pace for 40 points in a down year lol. And it’s rumored that he wants to go back to Vegas and Vegas would be interested in a return. So why wouldn’t we just work out a deal with them and not pay to dump Smith. And even if we don’t trade smith, we have just over 17 million in cap space with 16 players signed. The only big contract would be to either sign Jake or replace him. The other 5-6 players would just be 4th liners and depth pieces that will all be cheap. So if you think about it, the only reason the pens would or should pay would be because they were absolutely desperate. For example if they only had like 1 million in cap space next year. Otherwise it’s not gonna happen.

Those are all valid points but it doesn’t change the fact that Chicago as a rebuilding team will only take Smith if it is a benefit to them, taking on Smith’s $5m for next season does not benefit the Hawks unless they get paid to do so or in the worst case scenario they need to take on another contract to reach the cap floor. As mentioned in my previous post, that would be a Taylor Hall scenario and Pittsburgh gets a minor leaguer or nothing in return.

As for why Pittsburgh wouldn’t just deal with Vegas instead of Chicago, you will have to ask the creator of this thread.
