Team: 2023-24 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 17, 2024
Published: Feb. 17, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
To me the Devils are taking all the risk so maybe Calgary can find a team to retain some of Markstrom's salary. Devils also add a good value player like Pospisil. Holtz will get the playing time which he deserves and the Flames get a coveted offensive defenseman in Casey.

Flames decline.

They aren't retaining on Markstrom for 2.5 years and taking on Vanacek's contract AND add Tanev, AND adding Pospisil

Did Conway get green light to retain salary? That was supposed to be the hold up.

Columbus retaining

The cost for $1.4m x 3 would likely be a bit higher…probably 2nd or 3rd+

Maybe something like

CGY gives: Markstrom, $0.75m x 3
CGY gets: Holtz, Merzlikins

CBJ gives: Merzlikins, $1.25m x 3 (on Markstrom)
CBJ gets: Vanecek (at $1.7m), NJD 2nd, NJD 3rd

NJD gives: Holtz, Vanecek, $1.7m x 2, 2nd, 3rd
NJD gets: Markstrom (at $4m)

Don't be ridiculous I never suggested anything even remotely close to that. I said it needs to start with Mercer and a 1st.

Besides starting to bore me you're becoming annoying with how you keep trying to put words in my mouth. Stop it now.

Columbus wouldn't be the team to retain, since we historically haven't been that 3rd team. And honestly, I don't think it's realistic to ask a 3rd team to retain for two more years, unless you're sending at least a 2nd to a team that has to hit the cap floor, and has no aspirations of competing in the next 2 years. Since that's basically only Chicago, and possibly Anaheim or San Jose...it probably ups the price to a full first. Even retaining $1-1.5M for 2.5 seasons is a big ask, and I think finding a team to be that agent would be the biggest hangup on a trade.

(And no, teams can't just retain for one year of the multi-year deal...it's a percentage of the contract, and you're on the hook for the duration of the deal even if it's bought out for some reason, no takebacks).

The goalie market is definitely a buyer's market right now, but Calgary seems resolute in not retaining salary (even if it means they receive less). Neither of those situations favor Calgary. I don't envy Conroy...you either retain, take less, or just hold onto him. The first two scenarios: you lose. The second scenario: let's just way I doubt Markstrom stays top-4 in GSAx next season, his value is likely at a peak right now, so if you hold on you lose, and potentially block Wolf.

Calgary should have moved Markstrom when Carolina, NJ, Edmonton, and Toronto all desperately needed goaltending IMO. Timing is everything, you can't wait forever and expect to be able to make the right decision when you want to.

The McConnel family, despite a net worth of nearly $1.1B as reported by Forbes, has historically run the Columbus Blue Jackets organization as miserly as possible. In this essay I will...

That’s the problem with the goalie market. It changes rapidly.

Skinner got his **** together, Freddy Andersen about to come back, Daws looks fantastic, rittich looks very good and the kings have no more cap space, and Samsonov looks better+woll is about to come back.

The only thing that’s played in their favour is ig the flyers losing hart but no chance they buy a Markstrom

The problem with goalies themselves is they change rapidly! I don't think we'll see a goalie market as hot as we did a few weeks ago when none were moved. Even with Philly maybe needing another goalie, Ersson has been fine and Philly seems more positioned to sell than buy this year. Even Montreal is having trouble moving Allen. Barring injury to a playoff-contender's starter, the market probably doesn't get that hot again this season.
