Hanifin won't be going to the Leafs if that's the best Treliving can come up with.

The CGY trade seems fine for the most part: Might ask for one more pick or so. Andrew Peeke is very physical but in terms of effectiveness and translating that physicality to good defense I don’t think Peeke is there yet. I don’t like the Laughton deal either his analytics are the equivalent to Kampf’s - in other words, terrible. If we can retain him, sure - but absolutely nowhere worthy of a 1st or a 2nd. I do like Kaliyev although LA will most likely demand more for him.

Yeah, Kaliyev deal for Hildeby and 2 3rds might take a bit more
It was related to an earlier 23-24 TDL one, TOR gets Laughton (whos signed for 3 yrs) and Seeler at TDL for a 1st, 5th and (cap dump) Kampf, so Laughton alone doesn;t quite get a 1st and Kampf is kind of a cap dump to PHI.
As far as Peeke, at 1.4mil for 2 yrs hes a solid physical RD, who hasn;t put it together, similar to Benoit, but he'd be a good 7th or insurance if Niemala stumbles, and as uneven as hes been (remeber its CBS), hes a better offensive player than Benoit by a long shot. But ultimately he, McCabe and Benoit are the physical dmen we need, while reilly, hanifan and niemala rush the puck. With Niemala in the NHL we have pretty much nothing at D in the prospect pool.

Columbus passes. If it's the offseason, they buy him out rather than paying to move him.

Minten and Niemela aren't NHL ready in October. Jones has shown in after his good start, he's really not NHL dependable, so I don't see "next up" HIldeby traded.
Leafs have Marlies Dmen better who are under contract next season better than Peeke
Leafs aren' spending 7.75m on a LHD or even a RHD this summer. Leafs aren't paying that price at TDL for Hanifan either.

yea i dont think OP here was really thinking about what it means to swap columbus 4th and toronto 3rd. that'll be like 10 spots in the draft? that's quite literally devoid of any value once you're past the first round. so basically the trade is peeke with retention for a fifth round pick which we absolutely would not do when we could just buy him out like squashmaple said. buyout is $900k dead for 4 years, this trade is $1.3 mil dead cap for 2 years.

with the cap going up annually again, i simply wouldn't do toronto a favor.

Pretty sure with his size and still being relatively young, some team will give Columbus between a 5th-7th rounder or their own underwhelming prospect to take a shot at Peeke, CBJ most likely won't need to buy him out

I agree. And there's the huge factor that some team will see him as a reclamation project from a deeply dysfunctional organization. He's not worthless, and he'd already have been traded with a lower cap hit.

They can probably have him for FC since his contract is about $2M more than he should be making, with term. If a team is willing to just take him, that's totally fine. I don't understand why the team hasn't waived him and hoped he gets claimed.

But the fact of the matter is Columbus absolutely won't retain on him or pay to move him for any reason. If it gets to that point, a buyout makes way more sense, or he can sit in the pressbox for the next 2 years.

I just find a buyout for that low a caphit for a team with plenty of capspace makes no sense, trade him, waive him and if nobody wants him, bury him.
Columbus doesn't pay players not to play, they traded Horton for Clarkson for that very reason
