As an outsider who doesn't cheer for either team. I am curious to why Toronto would decline this? Reaves and Samsonov are not very good and in my mind would be viewed as cap dumps. Cowan is a good prospect but I think quite worth it for a goalie like Markstrom with term and good value. The 1st is probably going to be a 25-32 pick and most professionals call this a very bad draft class if you are picking anything outside of 10.

I would make this deal every time it was proposed to me. If Toronto wants a big name, they are going to have to part with Knies or Cowan. Teams are just not lined up to help Toronto out for nothing in return.

Sammy is off the books after this season and Reaves can be buried for almost nothing.
When was the last time a goalie went for a 1st and top prospect?
13-13 in the playoffs and .911 sv%
Rather look into Saros

Fair point. I too would go after Saros first but they have made it known that the offer would have to be one they couldn't refuse and this offer would not do it.

Stats don't always tell the whole story and most everyone should know that. 2021-22 where he played 63 games and went 37-15-9 with a .922 sv% and 9 shutouts. Why are we not talking about that when we mention his stats? Teams have up and down years, they could have injuries that brought the whole team game down. Remember he was on a bad Canucks and Flames team. I think he still has a lot more to give and any well built team would benefit from having him on it.

Hard pass for Vegas. We already have one of the best D-cores in the league and as of now, its fully healthy. We are in the market for a forward, a winger

You just answered your own question; very few goalies are vezina caliber every year - maybe 5? Markstrom does not fall into that category - he’s had good years but Samsonov was a top 10 goalie last year with Leafs. Offering a top prospect (Cowan is getting better & better - he’s a top, top prospect) & 1st is insane and a MASSIVE overpay; no way Tre (or any same GM) considers this

Because Leafs have had issues with goalie that struggle in the playoffs. Regular season Jack Campbell and Samsonov are very different from playoff Jack and Sammy.
Markstrom was not very good for the flames and Toronto media and fans would destroy him.
Giving up our first and only true prospect for some who is only a marginal upgrade wont work.
Use Cowboy and 1st and upgrade the D and get MAF as insurance.

again, fair point. I am an outsider to the Leafs. From my viewpoint, They have 3 guys on the team that have 70+ points in 55 games. These 3 guys are carrying this team and they need goal tending help. Maybe Samsonov was top 10 last year, but in the playoffs he fell asleep on the team. This is a very good team and I think with a quality goalie has a legitimate shot at the cup. Samsonov is not winning them a cup. So for that reason if the ask was for Markstrom-Cowan. I would jump at it. The first is irrelevant and I don't know why people are talking about it like it is something special in one of the weakest draft classes in history.

Deadline is in two weeks and a Dube-Formenton swap is a complete waste of time.

And Ottawa accepts the Mangiapane trade if you retain 50% on him.

Vegas doesn't shy away from big trades. Hanifin would be a younger replacement for Martinez should he demand too much. With the LTIR room, I think they would go for both.

Yeah, the "prisoner swap" was obviously a joke.

What need is there to retain on Mangiapane? He is an ideal fit, and with Tarasenko gone there is no cap issue.

Woll is the likely starter for the Leafs in the playoffs. And Leafs didn’t lose to Panthers b/c of Samsonov; Matthews had 0/2 & Marner 1/2 in 5 games

Markstrom is 3rd in the league for goals saved above expected. Saros is 70th. Samsanov 88th, Woll, 19th, Jones 20th.

https://moneypuck.com/goalies.htm

Markstrom's last year was bad, but that was an anomaly in an otherwise very consistent career. Calgary would be in a lotto position this year if it wasn't for him. His sv% and GAA would be top of the league if it wasn't for our d core hanging him out to dry in the first 15 games this year. Considering how many goalies Toronto has gone through, stability in net should be a top priority.

Also, the ask isn't high here considering he isn't a UFA.

I get the idea behind the Mangiapane trade but he’s just not playing well enough relative to his contract to be worth it

Except that whichever team we send Tarasenko to will ask us to retain 50% on him.

And even with 50% retention on Mangiapane, he would still have a higher cap hit than Brannstrom.

Playoff goaltending has been the Leafs issue.

I guess it depends on the team. If it is Vegas, probably not. Most teams are waiting to move players to LTIR just before the deadline, so there will be more cap space than currently indicated. The deal, as is, gives OTT 1.2MM in cap. If Tarasenko is half retained they lose 4.5 MM in cap but are up. 1.3MM from Mangiapane. It doesn't make it a bad deal. Getting Calgary to retain for multiple years is more difficult than retaining less on Tarasenko for a few months.

Tarasenko - 5MM
Mangiapane +5.8MM
Brannstrom -2MM

I fail to see how that changes anything. Having a better goalie for the playoffs would be the prudent move.

100%. Either one, or both, are capable but real test is whether Matthews, Marner & Nylander can take over playoff games like they do in the regular season
