5 Reasonable Moves with Reasoning

Created by: GMRyan
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 21, 2024
Published: Feb. 26, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Reasoning for both teams outlined below 👇

Chicago Trade- 1

Leafs- well they need cost effective depth. Boris Katchouk has been falling out a bit with the coaching and he brings a snarl and size the Leafs lack so he could fit. Colin Blackwell is a decent player who has been dealt on deadline day a couple times. He fit in well last time as a bottom 6 player

Blackhawks- Offload two decent players for two mid picks. Typical seller move, they aren’t close to the playoffs and they should consider getting whatever they can for non star players or prospects.

San Jose Trade- 2

Leafs- Ferraro has been a top defender on a very bad team. His numbers don’t shine much, similar to Simon Beniot last season. But Ferraro played with EK last year, and he remains a top 4 defender and PK guy. Toronto needs another Muzzin type, despite not being the dream RHD; he fits with both his contract, giving the Leafs some cost security. Plus he would be a fan favourite with his style of play.

Sharks- By all accounts they like Ferraro and signed him to his extension. But Greir would have to consider a 24 1st unprotected and an additional 3rd. That’s a decent haul for a guy that nobody talks about. Plus they are in the middle of a rebuild and Ferraro doesn’t fit the timeline at 27

Ryan Reaves on waivers. 3-

Simply put, he isn’t good enough and it creates 1.1 million in cap space. Call him up in the playoffs.

Sign Timothy Liljegren to an extension- 4

Signed to $4,850,000 x 6 years

I think it needs to be said that Lilly has developed into a top 4 defender. He is excellent at defending in transition. He skates well and has grown into more a more reliable and consistent player. He is the RHD answer we need to keep. Compared contract is Ramus Andersson

5- Sign Simon Beniot to a multi year extension- 5-

Signed to $1,850,000 x 3 years

I had no idea I’d be saying this. But we need to keep Simon Benoit! He is exactly the kind of player we needed and he seems to be relishing in his role here. McCabe and him have suddenly become a decent pairing. Let’s keep it together. Compared contract - Jake Bean

Chicago accepts, not sure San Jose does though. You could probably pay less to Chicago in that deal.

Yea these aint the moves

We dont need Ferraro we need a RD partner for Rielly

And then the 2 depth guys are guys we already have.

If im looking for depth forwards

= Texier, Tatar, Dowd, Acciari, etc

And those Liligren + Benoit extensions = overpays jesus

As much as we'd hate to lose Ferraro, the Sharks would have to consider that offer.

If you're looking for depth forwards, the Sharks could help there too: Kunin, Barabanov, Sturm.

Too much for Ferraro. Like them both but too much $ for Lili & Benoit; they’re RFAs not UFAs

Hawks accept. That 3rd probably gets both of them.

Have Lilly's extension number go down, I think he wants the 3-4 mill range on a long term deal...

Already tried and failed w Blackwell so NTU, Katchouk could be interesting though

Tre's already stated that he doesn't want to move a 1st, and the 3LD won't change that

Benoit should get a 1-1.5 mill deal
