I would imagine the sens pass. I think smith wold be a pretty good add at the expense of a draft pick, but this is a lateral move at best at a time when we need to get better

I think that's being generous. Jopseh is still young and getting better while bringing more than just points to the game. Smith is older and in steep decline. If he couldnt produce on a team with malkin, crosby and guentzel then theres no reason to assume he would do any better in Ottawa.

Even with money retained I would hope Ottawa stays away. Hopefully there are better options in free agency but even if there arent, keeping joseph should make that a more appealing option.

I don't see the Wings wanting to downgrade Copp to Eller.

Although its a decent offer I don't think the Habs trade Anderson.
They have hope he returns to his previous form; when he's playing at his best he is a solid middle 6er.
If he gets back there he can help this team take a step or can be traded for a higher return.
If he doesn't they have the cap space and time to ride out his contract or buy him out the last year or two if need be.
Forward depth for the habs isn't an issue as no one's 100% ready to make the jump so he's not really blocking a roster spot.

I just think we'd be better off keeping Eller. I believe he and Copp put up similar numbers this year. I don't think Copp's age compensates for that contract of his.

It's 1 year of eller who plays a similar game to get copps cap off the roster. Compher is the same player and we could use the 5M cap hit.

Cap space? Eller 1yr @ $2.45M vs Copp 3yrs @ $5.625

But I doubt Pittsburgh or Yzerman does this.

Use the cap hit for? Signing another similar player in free agency to a new deal? We need Compher at 2C as we likely won't find a replacement any time soon. Sign Monahan, Stephenson or Lindholm? We would just be starting that contract over yet. Kasper and Danielson aren't going to just come on and dominate. They will need players around them to insulate them.

Eller and Copp put up similar numbers this year and Eller costs half the price...
Rakells way better then Anderson and cheaper... why would PIT be the one paying?

How about stamkos as an example. Just saying other options out there to help the team. Copp lsnt worth the squeeze

Stamkos have been a centre for a few years now. He wouldn't be good there. Sure he would bump up the offense but how about our lack luster defense?

I was just using him as an example of people they could get whose an upgrade over copp. Stamkos played center for more then half the season btw

I get that but I don't think he would be the best use of cap. We were 9th best for goals for, 9th worst for goals against. Love him or hate him, Copp is one of our best defensive options in the forward group.
