Additional Details:
A mix between the Brooks Orpik trade and Petr Mrazek trade. WSH traded a 2nd to COL along with Orpik for COL to buy out Orpik's last remaining year and allowing him to go back to WSH. TOR traded a 1st with Mrazek to CHI for a 2nd. So wanted a mix of those two deals

Tavares has a NMC.

He's not waiving it.

Like Marner he's a Toronto boy living his dream.

He's not going anywhere.

I highly doubt Tavares is going to waive for Chicago

if if Tavares does waive NMC why does Toronto drop down a round for a 70 point score on a 3.5 million dollar contract (that he wouldn't sign)

JT isn't waiving, but CHI would absolutely accept.

The NHL made that kind of move impossible. If Tavares waives and TOR trades him this summer, they wouldn't be able to sign him again until the summer of 2025 when his contract is up anyway.

It is not like he plays for the hawks in this scenario....he literally is traded for the sole purpose of being bought out and resigned cheaper.

He waives to get bought out and sign a team friendly deal back with the Leafs. He will end up making more money this way too, hence why he does it plus to help the team get better around him.

I don't even think that's legal?

Didn't the NHL add a Brooks Orpik rule? 🤔

Moving tavares because cap space only works if you use that cap space to fill a massive need.
This fills that cap space with over paid secondary pieces and the team is worse all over

I don't know if he can do that. That just sounds like hes screwing over Chicago and minupulating the but out rule to get Toronto more cap room

I get the whole concept of trading Tavares with his blessings so Chicago can buy him out and he can resign with Toronto on a more team friendly deal… hell that may actually benefit Tavares when you consider how much actual $$ is left to be paid out on his deal.

Where this guy’s proposal falls short for me as a Chicago fan is, if I am interpreting the two buyout calculators I referred to correctly, the Hawks would end up with a $10.4m cap hit next season for buying out Tavares… according to Puckpedia’s cap relief calculator, that should cost the Leafs a 1st round pick (# 20). So that means the Leafs give up their 1st round pick and Chicago sends nothing back to Toronto.

This isn't allowed by the CBA any longer. But curious? You think the Hawks would pay Tavaras the $7.6m owed on his buyout to move up from a late 2nd to a late 1st?

I think they'd just keep him. I didn't really get into the whole buyout situation to be honest because it's not allowed anymore.
