Trading 5th OVR

Created by: MTLaveragefan
Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 25, 2024
Published: Apr. 25, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Lindstrom, Demidov and Celebrini are gone... and the BPA is likely a Dman.

There would still be attractive forwards available at 5th. But, Habs cannot afford to make that many mistake with their rebuild timeline.

So acquiring a now-established rookie, could be an interesting strategy to limit the risk and speed up the rebuild as the core is turning 23-24.

I could be open to trading the 5th OVR for one of BUF's youngters: Quinn or JJP.

I have other proposed trades centered around the 5th OVR pick in the 2024 NHL Draft + Barron/Harris

We have the ability to add and to take cap dumps as well.

Let me know if your team would be open to trade one of these kids for the right package.

You are welcome to make a counter.

Can't see Buffalo doing this but maybe Savoie and a vet roster player

Sabers pass they are going to stick with the talent they have. JJ and Quinn were two of their best players this year.

I can understand BUF fans not wanting to prolong the rebuild. I think the talent is there... the players just need to put it together (they would need a MSL type coach - let's hope Lindy will be up to the task).

In that situation its hard to trade for what you got vs. what could be.

Buffalo is not trading jack Quinn. We aren't trying to rebuild anymore

It's a weak draft, Cutter was taken at 5 and has grown since then, Verbeek went out and traded for him and got his guy, he's not going to be traded.

I don't think its a weak draft - I think its a Dman heavy draft.

Trading the 5OV for anything other than a legit, already top player, would be a bad move.

It literally makes more sense to move Guys like Guhle, Hutson, Xhekaj, etc than trading the 5ov.

I think people need to hear this: The player taken at 5OV this year is likely to be the best player of all players drafted since Hughes and Gorton have been at the helm, with the exception of Slafkovsky. It makes more sense to move any player we've drafted since Slaf than to move the 5OV.

Just because 5OV is not a unanimous pick does not mean it is less valuable, so we should trade it.

Fair enough. If we look at the 2023 draft picks after Reinbacher - a lot of people would also be happy with Benson, Michkov, Ryan Leonard.

After Slaf's and Hutson's pick - I'm starting to trust Bobrov and his picks. I just hate that we are once again outside the concensus/creme of the crop top 4...

Agree with that sentiment 100%. This is the price for not going scorched earth type of rebuild unfortunately. Last year for sure was major drop off. This year however Im less worried. I know everyone is creaming their pants for Lindstrom but the truth is anyone from 3-10 is interchangeable. They all have equal potential, just different playing styles and abilities. All I ask from this mgmt is to take the BPA in their mind and not reach for a position just for need. If its a dman, take the dman.

Like I reiterated, the dman available at 5OV this year may make all other dmen in the entire organization available. Including Hutson for example.

Lindstrom or Iginla > Rossi, Quinn, Guenther

Maybe Gauthier worth it but Ducks have mo reason to do this even if value is fair

I would love to see Demidov or Lindstrom sneak by... but I'm realistic. Also, I agree that BPA is the way to go -> Good Dman can be leverage to get good forwards - AKA Drysdale and Gauthier.

Caps say yes considering neither Rossi or Gaudreau is a Cap wink

AH LOL - I must have forgotten to change team (TBH - I was looking for a Leonard trade... and couldn't find one that made sense for the Caps)

yeaaaa Leonard is about as untouchable as Ovi in Washington lol. Last time we traded our top prospect, we got 2 goals from Martin Erat. Never again...

Lol, I can imagine! We've felt the same pain in MTL a couple times (Aka Ryan McDonagh, Sergachev, etc.)
