Flip Ullmark Land Carlo

Created by: DopeGM
Team: 2024-25 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2024
Published: May 15, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I was looking for a shutdown RHS Dman for this team. Well it’s Carlo or Cernak basically. I don’t see a UFA coming to BUF.

So I’m assuming (mostly for the fun of it!) that the Boston BBuster won’t result in Ullmark staying. I vaguely remember he dislikes ownership or something. But man, this team is a LOT better, and they should be giving up the 11th OA and Rosen, but wow.

I don't think I'd even think about that package for just Carlo, forget Ullmark.

And why would Boston not trade Ullmark to Carolina themselves?

Canes pass. 0 interest in Ullmark and his “stellar” playoff record

Not enough in the deal for BUF to accept without him in there.

Rosen and 11OA isn’t enough for Carlo in your mind? Interesting

Kulich or Ohgren instead of Rosen results in a “no” from the BUF side I would think.

Would you move the pick for a veteran but not too old RHS shutdown defenceman?

We have invested quite heavily in our blue line.

I'd rather trade it for a middle 6 center

Boston is not trading Carlo. Period.

If Canes want Ullmark B’s just trade him to them themselves. Doubt they do. Freddy, OK, and Martin all signed for next year. They’d have to make other moves to make room for him.

I was brainstorming a properly aged RHS dman and only Carlo and Cernak popped through. Both way more valuable to their teams than in trades.

An elite winger or a shutdown third line centre. On the third line centre, that’s interesting. Worth noodling. Playoff style centres are really hard to land in trade. Seems more likely that Kulich becomes that piece to me. I like the thinking but can’t think of a target

Rumors Cernak is done in TB, might try for him. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nope. A draft pick and an undersized winger who hasn't scored an NHL goal for the best penalty killing D around locked into a killer contract? I wouldn't make that move.

I can see that the "value" is there in that - but why would you ever move on from Carlo at $4.1M? It's less than 30% that a player picked at 11 will ever be as good as Carlo, and I don't think Rosen's ceiling is as valuable as Carlo is, let alone his current value as an undersized 20 goal AHL player.

I don’t believe Boston is trading Carlo. He fits the age grouping of their best players. My guess is they use FA to acquire help at forward

I’d like to believe Carolina isn’t trading Necas, but could see it if they want to keep Guentzel. Curious to see how replacing FA’s with young defenders impacts their identify

I would say there’s a 75% chance that the pick at 11 is as impactful to the team as Carlo in a different role. Massive difference in pick value is our difference of opinion.

Carlo gets a really nice third contract most likely. So if I’m Bs management, the question is “is three years of Carlo compared to Clifton worth sacrificing in order to land 10+ years of a young, impactful player”

Catton / Iginla for forwards
Yakemchuk / Silayev on D

Those are really projectable, nice pieces to add.

Tough to move Carlo but the value is around correct in ACGM land smile

I think there 11th pick is around the point in most drafts where you get into hit and miss territory. Your likelihood of selecting Wahlstrom is probably just as high as Villardi.

I don’t believe Boston is in a stage where decreasing their defensive effectiveness fits with their identify. I think the probability that the 11th pick is better than Carlo over the next 4 years is probably in the 25th percentile (since you chose a random one, I might as well).

I like random numbers smile

I disagree just simply based on reading and thinking about this draft. It’s possible it’s the usual homer pre draft hype that’s got me. But I’m usually pretty solid on what high floors look like.

If they took Senecke for example, that’s a much lower floor. Bust potential. But Iginla and Catton look very projectable. Silayev has bust potential and I’ve only seen highlights. But a floor of Tyler Myers is not all that shabby.

I’m trying to say that the pick is very projectable for the Bs if they were to move Carlo it would have to be for a premium asset. Better the pick than Rossi for example.

Canes are likely to trade Necas, but not for a goalie and a injury prone defender who is signed long term.

Value is certainly there. If the Bs were rebuilding/retooling, I'd probably accept if I were them, but they're not. They have a boatload of cap space going into next year with a lot of talent, both young and old, on their roster. Trading Carlo just creates a massive hole that they can't really fill elsewhere. Just not the move to make for a contending team

I think other teams might consider it. Its just the stage of the teams life cycle.
