Oof that Bouchard trade isn't close... thats like if Edmonton offered Foegele, Broberg, and a 1st for Dobson.
Don't think a soon to be 33 year old on a expiring contract Brock Nelson has much value to other teams.

Jesus. EDM is <strong>infinitely </strong>better off just buying him out at the end of the year. If they absolutely feel the need to make a G addition in-season, they'd still be infinitely better off sending away one of their smaller salaries (Foegele, Kulak, or the like). Y'all are getting nuts with this stuff.

Nurse is worth about 7M a year yes he’s overpaid but he’s still one of the best defensemen 5 on 5 in the league so you think getting rid of the oilers best defensemen is the solution for

Next Year No Woodcroft or Holland
There really is no solution other than EDM trading Draisaitl to actually get good depth and fix their D/goaltending. McDavid and Drai can only carry this team so far.

Hire Gerard Gallant
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AlbertaRockies</b></div><div>Kulak is a dump. That’s why I put the 3rd in there.</div></div>
That makes sense. A third might get it done, depending when this trade takes place. For comparison sake, at the beginning of the 22-23 season it cost VAN a 2024 2nd to dump Dickinson's contract on CHI, which was pretty similar in term, cap hit, and actual salary. So, using that knowledge, if this trade happens now at the beginning of the season, I'd say it might take a 2025 2nd to get it done. But who knows. I don't think CHI would be too upset taking on his contract. Especially if they are ready to send one or two of the rookie dmen down in the near future. I know they would probably be ok with scratching Zaitsev for the rest of the season, or even waiving him.

Hawks would probably consider this. They value TRad pretty highly. Kulak is a serviceable NHL D man but at best he's replacing Tinordi and Zaitsev on 3rd pair RD for a team with no real expectations of winning, so he's not a valuable piece. The 3rd probably covers taking his cap hit for this season and then he gets bought out in June.

You guys don’t need Chabot tho. You guys need a RD like Moritz Seider. More of a 2 way guy than an offensive LD

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Yes, Boqvist isn't great defensively, he's a 3rd pairing defenseman at this point in his career. And at 5'11, 179, he'll likely never be above average defensively. His offensive ability would be a bit wasted playing behind Bouchard. </div></div>
He's positionally very good defensively, and good with his stick. You can be good defensively without being physical, which is what he's done. He's just known for being an offensive D-man, which he's better at.
I don't know that he's a fit in Edmonton, but he's definitely not a 3rd-pair defenseman. Health is an issue, but he's looked good when in the lineup (and on a bad team), and he's getting better (at only 23).
Columbus has Mateychuk and Svozil on the cusp of the NHL, so I'm not sure Broberg moves the needle much. If the trade went through, though, I wouldn't be mad.

Not quite sure. I just don’t think anyone other McDavid, Draisatl and maybe RNH is as important to this team as Bouchard.

I’m curious if this happened, Edmonton in theory could match, be over the cap temporarily and then buyout/ trade the necessary salary to be cap compliant?

Do Better Holland
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arman2002k</b></div><div>Even without Patrick Kane. This team is so much better than last season. The defence actually looks good now compared to what Ken Holland constructed. You get rid of Bouchard, Ceci, and Kulak. Those are three defensive liabilities. You instead add Noah Dobson, Ethan Bear, and Brendan Dillon. You clearly have no knowledge of hockey outside of Edmonton. Dillon is a massive upgrade on Kulak. He’s physical, he is a shutdown player. Ethan Bear is an upgrade on Cody Ceci. Bear is proven on both ends of the ice. Then there’s Noah Dobson. Arguably better than Bouchard offensively, and 10x better defensively. Dobson is a massive upgrade on Bouchard. The defence is not only better its head and shoulders above anything the Oilers have had in the last decade.</div></div>
Calling Ethan Bear proven on both ends of the ices is one of the funniest comments I've seen on this site. Look I love Bear he's a great guy but he wasn't good in Edmonton and there is a reason he is a ufa. Kulak is a great bottom pair d-man and was one of their best d-man over the past two years. The only upgrade is Dillion who plays the left side and not the right. Edmonton doesn't need more LD they need a good stable RD which you have failed to supply. So yes congrats you upgraded a d-man over Cody Ceci, which anyone can do. The d-core is still worse and all you have done is made the right side even worse. Dillon does nothing for us.

Do Better Holland
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arman2002k</b></div><div>I’d certainly do a far better job than Holland and Chiarelli</div></div>
No you wouldn't. Bouchard has played better than Dobson so what's the point of that swap besides losing team chemistry? Kane isn't signing that low and definitely isn't signing in Edmonton of all places. Martin does absolutely nothing for Edmonton as well so no point in that islanders trade at all besides making Edmonton worse. I love Hart and he's worth more than Skinner but the goal is to win right now and he just has not proven he's that much better than Skinner over the past two seasons. You've made the d-core much worse, goaltending is the exact same, and the forward group is also worse?? Holland has crafted a team that gave the cup champs their best series last year.
This team is much worse.

I appreciate the insight. As someone younger, this really puts into perspective how insane of a trade that was and how much something like that would shake up the league if something similar were to happen today.

Marty said he was traded for the cash. Always cracked me up. 😁
I recall those Gretzky Kings jerseys (home and away) selling like hot cakes after that trade. Always liked those jerseys.
Seemed like everyone had one. Even people who didn't watch hockey. There's no Sharks or Ducks (or Kings?) without #99 coming to LA.

IIRC his meat packing plant was going bankrupt. Or he himself was going bankrupt. Whatever. Puck even sold his wife's wedding ring.
After Messier was traded Puck was asked why Slats couldn't get a better return. Puck answered "Mark isn't exactly the Hope Diamond."

Deep Breath Everyone
To be honest, I would be very surprised if he does much else. He signs Smith and O'connor. Maybe he signs one more depth forward.
He is under the cap with a 20 man roster. He will waive either Ned or DeSmith, a few of the forwards and some the waiver eligible dman before the year start. Don't be surprised if he runs a 20 man to start the year. Injuries will solve the cap issues and he will then call up the guys who deserve it.
Petry has a 95% chance of being on the team, unless a very unlikely EK deal happens.
Granlund I bet gets a shot to prove himself. He is at worst a 3.5m player. There is a lot more than what he showed last year with Pits.
Carter probably also stays. Full NMC.
I have gone through several Dubas off seasons, and this seems about right, outside of 1-2 more depth signings. The past few years, the Leafs had crazy depth because of all the signings. But it will mean guys ike Puustinen, Nylander will have a rough go making the team.
We will see!
My guess is he signs ZAR and calls it a day. This is my wild guess :P
