My apologies I misinterpreted what you said. Yes I agree his not like an A level prospect, but he is one of the best in the leafs pool. I’m sorry again if I caused any conflict that was not my intent

You've never seen him anywhere near a top 50 NHL prospect list, because right now hes nowhere close. I would suspect that hes a big fish in a small pond in Toronto's prospect system and is behind only knies, niemala, hirvonen and maybe tied or slightly ahead of cowan in terms of talent, but thats not saying tons.
Hes a good prospect and could get better, but right now hes probably a longshot for top 9 in the NHL.

(PIT/MTL/SJS) - Granlund, Rutta, Petry, DeSmith, Légaré, 2024 1st (PIT), 2025 2nd (PIT) for Pitlick, Hoffman for Karlsson, Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd (SJS)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>As long as each two way trade completes it's fine. So presumably the Habs traded pittsburgh Hoffman and Pitlick for the retained Petry, desmith, the second, and the prospect.
Then Pittsburgh traded Hoffman, Granlund, ruuta and the first for Karlsson retained, the third and a prospect</div></div>
Does that mean if Hoffman had a no-trade clause, and Pittsburgh was on his no-trade list but San Jose wasn't, they wouldn't have been able to do this deal? If so, then I guess something of little value would have to go from San Jose to Montreal so they can say he went directly from Montreal to San Jose without stopping in Pittsburgh on the way.

They made out like bandits. When Petry gets dealt this gets even better for them, which is why they’ll win.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>So a lot of moving parts here in organizations I'm less familiar with, so trying to see if I follow.
So Montreal essentially got
DeSmith (solid but not special backup). Likely quite low but positive value
What appears like a nothing prospect in legare?
And a 2025 second
Got to dump one year of Hoffman (pp specialist with skill there but otherwise pretty crappy)
In exchange for trading a depth piece with low value (Pitlick) and taking back a bad contract but retained in Petry, but 2 years vs Hoffman's 1 year
Pitts
Good:
Traded/dumped ruuta (neutral to mildly bad value)
Traded/dumped Granlund. Value controversial as his offense isn't bad, but analytics people think he's just awful. 2 years
Got a nothing prospect
Got a third
Got the mildly retained super star!!! (Karlsson)
Got a decent depth player (Pitlick)
Got out of most of Petry for 2 years
Paid:
2024 protected first
2025 second
Retention on Petry for two years
A solid backup but minimal value as they had 3 goalies
Sneaky bad:
By trading bad contracts instead of having sj retain more they will have Karlsson at 9.5 in years 3 and 4 when he's likely to be at his worst
San Jose
Cost
Paid karlsson
Retention on Karlsson (low but 4 years)
Took three dumps (ruuta and Granlund 2 years, Hoffman one).
A 3rd
Got:
A protected first
Got out of the majority of karlsson's contract
I think this is overall LIKELY* fair and people were way over valuing Karlsson/underappreciating the issues of trading his contract when they were discussing the returns he'd get
I think the clincher here if it was fair for everyone or if Montreal rocked it is what one thinks of Petry. He was a great defenseman a couple years ago. I haven't watched him much recently but he certainly has taken a lot of hate. So if he does truly suck it's fair. If he's still an okay second pair defenseman they did quite well</div></div>
Petry is still playing over 20 minutes and producing, which he kind of has to at $6M. Not good value, but not necessarily bad either.
At $3M or less though? There's still value there and even room for regression without being a negative asset. Can still play top 4, but you can plant him on your 3rd pair for good depth and have someone ready to step in if necessary. If you acquire him as top 4, he's not hurting you much at only 2 years of term if he falls off unless he ends up riding the pine.

They are the perfect trade spot because with how old their core is, this is hardly going to be a worry.
If Karlsson can continue to play like a top pairing defenseman for the next 2 seasons, Pittsburgh could possibly flip Karlsson with retention when he is down to 1-2 years remaining. If he proves himself that way, it will help alleviate any concerns about his long term play, and obviously 1-2 years is a lot less term than 4 years. I can already see the thread, where Pittsburgh gets a late 1st++ for Karlsson, and people dunk on San Jose for Pittsburgh getting more for him, while completely ignoring the context of why San Jose got what they did.

No, it hasn't dropped like that. lol
Supposedly the Wild were willing to part with him for a 1st before the draft, but it doesn't sound like they were desperate to move him. At this point, just see how he develops and if he can't cut it as a center, move him to the wing and try that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>Is it me or is this more value than debrincat got?</div></div>
Even when you consider Fabbri has very little trade value, Detroit is still giving up more than they did for DeBrincat who is 2yrs younger. It's also worth pointing out that Yzerman was unwilling to give up Berggren in the trade for Debrincat. Berggren put up 15g - 13a = 28 points in his first season in the NHL and he did this playing in the bottom 6.
Now Arizona can probably get more Schmaltz but it doesn't make a lot of sense for Detroit either. Both teams decline.

Yeah he’s not great defensively but let’s not pretend like almost all the star players in the NHL don’t do the same thing.
He gets paid to get pucks in the net. He is doing that job and for a pretty cheap AAV given his production.

That doesn't change the fact that he sucked. PIT forward lineup and goaltending were best in the league. Defense didn't need to be competent. They were only average with Letang and completely transformed into below average when he was out.
