I'm tired of Leafs fans just trying to give away all of our prospects for nothing. At first they were begging Dubas to trade Knies, now they're begging Brad to trade Minten and Niemela, next it'll be Cowan.

I am on board for a Minten to VAN deal as he was a Nucks fan growing up and it's just really nice to see someone playing for their childhood favourite team. If you got Rathbone and Hoglander for him and a 4th, why not do it to deepen the pool with guys who have shown that NHL potential?

They young guys are the ones that will eventually fill the depth... no need to trade that... only to trade for an older, similar player and 3x the cost

Hoglander and Rathbone aren't anything the Leafs need. Minten should be kept.

Because I really like Minten and I want him to play for us. Selfish? Maybe, but that's just how she goes.

Exactly, Leafs don't have a very deep prospect pool so they can't really afford to give up their best prospects.

You hope he makes the world Juniors as a draft +2 player. That says it all.

Because neither of those players are likely to be impact players at the NHL level. It's better to have a shot at such

What's wrong with hoping a player I cheer for and really enjoy represents our country?

I wasn't clear.

What I'm saying is if you only HOPE, ie he isn't guaranteed, that he can make the world Juniors team (not dominate there just make the team), 2 years after being drafted, than he isn't that good a prospect

Is he a Bedard or Fantilli ? No. But that doesn't mean is isn't a good prospect.
Team Canada is one of the strongest teams every year at the WJC, and even some of the best players eligible don't make the cut. In his D+1 year, Dawson Mercer was on the fourth line for Canada, with no guarentee he'd make it on. I'm not saying he's near Mercer, but just because he isn't a guarantee right now doesn't make him bad.

Bedard and fantilli were first line players before being drafted.

Mercer made the team as you say as a draft +1. If you said you hoped he made it as a draft +1 it would be a different conversation. But not being a guarantee as a draft +2 speaks against him being particularly highly thought of

I'm well aware they were first line players pre-draft.

Also, just making the team at any point is a greater feat than most, just because he isn't a guarantee doesn't make him a bad prospect by any means.

Jakob Chychrun and Darnell Nurse didn't make the team ever, does that then make them bad prospects/players?

For chycrun that is because he was an NHL regular at 18. For nurse, I can find you any number of players who in hindsight succeeded.

But the point stands he's not a top end prospect and that exemplifies it.

I edited out my last line as I wasn't 100% sure Nurse didn't play, but I think he is one of the Leafs best prospect, I never said he was a superstar.

Why do you dislike your own prospect so much? Why not be happy they may make the WJC instead of using it against them?

I never once said I disliked him. I just recognize that he is not a "great prospect". I have never seen him anywhere near a top 50 NHL prospect list.

Guys like Minten, Voit, Villenueve are midlevel prospects, but in a system that really only has Hirvonen and Niemala as real impact prospects, they get inflated (call it the Robbie Earl effect).

Minten has good size and skill and could be an NHLer, but it'd be crazy to think at this point hes got top 6 ability.

You are correct, the leafs are laden with older guys and a ton of UFAs, with just 4 guys under contract beyond the next 2 years, and they need every youngster they have (even the dark horses and midlevel ones).

HOWEVER, as this team is looking at the trophy and is likely to finish high in the regular season standings again, you have to look at what they have to offer if an injury happens or at the trade deadline. With just 2 1sts, no 2nds over the next THREE drafts its going to be tough to fix anything thats broken without dealing the few remaining picks or the present prospects.

You've never seen him anywhere near a top 50 NHL prospect list, because right now hes nowhere close. I would suspect that hes a big fish in a small pond in Toronto's prospect system and is behind only knies, niemala, hirvonen and maybe tied or slightly ahead of cowan in terms of talent, but thats not saying tons.

Hes a good prospect and could get better, but right now hes probably a longshot for top 9 in the NHL.

My apologies I misinterpreted what you said. Yes I agree his not like an A level prospect, but he is one of the best in the leafs pool. I’m sorry again if I caused any conflict that was not my intent
