I don't bring back Danault, Tatar, Staal. I try to move Byron, Chiarot. Would move Weber if someone would bite.
Armia if hes cheap for the bottom 6.
RNH won't take that little.
Coleman has never hit 40pts and he's in your top 6 over RNH?</div></div>
Can we go with 4 young centres? If not, we will need to replace Danault with a similar player. Hopefully his market value is lower now and we can afford him.
Armia is a close call for me too. Perhaps keep him over Coleman, but we have too many RH shots.
DonM't worry about the line combinations. I don't value Coleman over RNH, as witnessed by the contracts I would give each.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>leafsfaninvancity</b></div><div>Leafs can get Hainsey for 1.5 mill. Gardiner is gone, Dermott is moved up to the top 4. Rosen and Sandin should be ready for bottom pairing minutes, as could Liljegren. Wouldn't be surprised to see Brown and Hyman gone for a couple of picks with the emergence of Grundstrom/Moore/Bracco in the AHL who are knocking on the NHL door. Sign Johnsson for 2 mill and <strong>Kapanen for 2.5</strong>. Leafs could get MAtthews for 12.5 and you're just at the cap. Yes the defense will be bad for another year but once Marleau is gone and the cap continues to go up the Leafs have alot of flexibility. They can also trade Johnsson and Kapanen for d help but I wouldn't want to see it happen. They have so much more upside than Hyman/Brown. Wouldn't mind see Hyman, Brown, and a pick to NYI for Pulock.</div></div>

Marleau would not be moved he has NTC and he is good. Hyman is workhorse. He is important part of Babcocks system. We would need to survive with a bit weaker defence tbh but it would be managable imo. Someone cheap would be signed that would be good but not great.</div></div>

I've been following hockey very closely since 1964.
Most teams actually do re-sign their contributing players whose contracts are expiring.
The Leafs can't, but that is not the norm.
Even if the Leas sacrifice Gardiner and Hainsey and Kapanen, they don't get under the cap if they pay $2.5M each for the 2/3 defencemen.
It will take Nylander or Marner and Kadri or Kapanen, plus a downgrade on D.
All because they got greedy and went after Tavares.

OK, so the team that is already weak defensively will have to sacrifice its #2 and #3 D-men and would still be over the cap by $4M or more, depending on whether they are replaced by league-minimum players, or higher salary ones.
Assuming that the Leafs don't want to play with Rielly plus their AHL defence roster, let's assume one guy at $3M and one guy at $2M are needed to partially replace Gardiner and Hainsey. In that case, the team would be $7M over the cap. Looks like Nylander plus another player will have to go, (assuming they want to keep Marner and Matthews no matter what). Tavares has a NMC and Rielly is indispensable.
That other player does not have to Kadri, but at least Kadri might get you back a decent young cheaper asset. Marleau won't fetch anything, and Leafs would have to GIVE to move him. That might work. Marleau and Hyman for a pick?

Dream on. Your team is massively flawed, crippled by big contracts to guys who have never won anything, while being unbalanced between offence and defence.
If you don't trade Nylander, you lose two of your 3 experienced D anyway, and you can't give competitive salaries to all of Matthews, Marner, Kapanen and Johnsson.

But this roster is unfinished -- extending Karlsson will require more cap space and it's at the absolute limit.
Melnyk is cheaper than he is proud. He'll cave, they'll trade Karlsson, and then they'll spend some picks to pay another team like Detroit to do Ryan's buyout.</div></div>
Of course it's moot now, but Karlsson's extension increase would come from Kronwall's contract expiration.

Perhaps he can be convinced that playing alongside Shea Weber and in front of Carey Price, and with the great young forward talent on hand and coming, the future would be good. Also, he could command more money in Montreal due to his role than elsewhere.
I don't know if it would be convincing enough, but the team should try.

Cleaning up long-term cap issues
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>VeeMerk</b></div><div>Dude, what are you doing... Weber is the only major long-term cap issue. Alzner has 4 years so at worst, we buy him out in 2. Shaw is only 3.9 (which is too high for him but we'd be able to trade that contract). I wouldn't classify Price as an issue cause he's the best goalie in the NHL</div></div>
Weber is on LTIR to start the year, I did not move Price, I traded Shaw's contract like you agree is possible, and Alzner would be a 4-year drag on the cap if we buy him out in two years, so move him now; why take up a roster spot instead of auditioning a youngster?

Byron is tied for 31st in the league for non-PP goals the past two seasons. With 96 top-6 forward spots on 16 playoff teams, that puts him easily in good company.

Hudon and Lehkonen can both play RW. Add to Gallagher, Armia and Scherbak, and that's enough options.

Trying to make a good fair karlsson trade
Karlsson is going to fetch a lot less than Ottawa fans are dreaming. It's ONE year at the bargain rate, then it is very clear that Karlsson wants absolute top dollar going forward, leaving little trade value for cost-controlled players. The trade makes little sense from either team's viewpoint.
If I'm Tampa, I'm not trading a guy with near-Karlsson potential in Sergachev plus Foote plus a 1st, to get 1 year of a guy who has half an ankle, plus Pageau. Why would Tampa even need Pageau? And why would cash-strapped Ottawa want to add Callahan to Ryan to make $13M of deadweight for the next 2 years?
i think Karlsson for Foote and a 1st is about right. Maybe add a 3rd in 2020 if they win the Cup.
On another note, why trade Chlapik?
