<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaptainFlynnt</b></div><div>To be honest I'm not sure either, but Sergachev has worked his way up TB's blueline to being their 2nd best D after Hedman. You look at Hedman, probably the best Dman in the NHL, and then you look at where he was at 21 yrs old vs where Sergachev is, and Sergachev is a pretty promising player.

The problem is you're gonna have to overpay for him and likely give him 5 yrs to where he will be a UFA, so is it really worth it? If you can resign him I guess it is, or you could flip him and get your assets back. Either way adding a player like Sergachev would be amazing.

Out of curiosity what other FA's would you want MTL to go for @ $8.45M? To me, TB is in the worst situation in the NHL cap wise right now, so I don't see how any other player could be acquired easier.</div></div>

My concern is how much is Serg a product of the team he plays on thus far? While he is by no means NOT someone I wouldn't want and he definitely talented, has he really earned the Subban treatment just yet? I don't think so. I feel if you try to get him at a cap that is above what TB can realistically can get, maybe 6M fine but going higher than that seems premature. Also for the comparison between Hedman, I mean yeah he might have taken longer to turn into the stud he is now but i don't necessarily think what Serg has achieved up to now is indication he'll be what Hedman is now.

I dunno, its tough. I feel Serg is an offensive dman who produces points but on the defensive side isn't as strong and if you are paying someone that much you need to get that defensive acumen also.

What about Vince Dunn? He certainly won't cost as much. Or wait till next year and see what you got first in Romanov and if you still need someone, check the RFA's next year.....Dahlin, Heiskanen, Hughes, Sanheim, etc

Either way, i would be glad to get Sergachev back anywhere between 5-6M but if you go into the 8.5M stratosphere, you are opening him up to some harsh criticism that i don't think he'll be up to the task for. The jump from TB to MTL is steep. Plus everything that happened with him and Weber last game, his remarks about Montreal and this management...... he's not being asked to give up millions of dollars for ever. Eventually TB will have the cap space to resign him to a proper contract and reward him like they've done with all their players. If its me, Im ok with taking a two year 3M contract in TB. Then renegotiate in two years when TB has had time to make more cap space.

Habs OS to Aho was in the right direction to target. He was already Carolina's top player and worthy of a huge over payment. Sergachev is good but im not convinced he has earned it yet. Throwing the world at someone who hasn't earned it yet IMO not only is unwise but creates problems in the dressing room. Throw that on top of all the other aspects of why I don't think it will work and I feel he is not the right target.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>Nice post. While I don't agree with some it, it's far from bad in any way.

My only question is: Is it enough and Is this team so different from the one that's missed the playoffs the past 3 years? IMO it isn't. So if the goal is to try and make the playoffs again, then I think it falls short yet again. All it takes is a couple injuries yet again and the team will be out of it.

Ultimately though this looks super realistic and I would say you nailed what I believe MB will do this year to a tee. Good job!

Edit: I also think if you do sign Domi and Danault, you have to look at trading KK now. Not because he's bad or anything but this team has too many centers at this point that its time to start using that depth to get better players at other positions of need. If you hold onto assets too long they'll depreciate their value. KK on a ELC still along with a pick and a roster player like Lehkonen should get us a very good player.

Also Edit: Some of those pending UFA resignings are just too low. Danault, Tatar, Gallagher will all get north of 6M easily. Gally is looking at 7M and its not even breaking a sweat. Danault is getting 6M minimum and Tatar at 6M on the dot is about right, maybe slightly more. It would be nice if they took hometown discounts but some of these aren't discounts they are pure lowball offers. They will be higher I guarantee it.</div></div>

I disagree. In fact, I'm pretty sure Gally will take a discount for us to sign some other players. He obviously knows his value but is the ultimate team player. He is the heart and soul of the team and will understand it if Bergevin asks him to maybe take just below 6. I can also see Danault taking a discount because MTL is where he's from, he feels comfortable, his wife is from around here, his family lives in Quebec, he is getting #1 minutes where he wouldn't anywhere else. He is in the perfect situation for himself and is striving. I could definitely see both of them taking one for the team like MacKinnon. As for Tatar and Petry, I think they will ask for more money but Petry is probably more inclined to stay than Tatar.
Trading KK rn is maybe the worst thing to do. Do you remember when we traded Sergachev for Drouin? It's so much better to show the fans that we are able to trust the development of the players. KK's value is also at an all time low. I just don't see any reason to trade him.

Lol Price and Weber will not be bought out. Any suggestion comes from people who think they can predict the future.

Montreal is very unique and fans of other teams don't quite understand the Habs situation. They look at the roster and project their cities circumstance on it, because that's what they know and most teams are similar that way. It really doesn't work completely the same way in Montreal.

Montreal has never been and will never be the premier destination for UFAs. Language, taxes, weather, fan pressure, etc etc etc. Grooming your own talent takes years and to make matters worse, Habs haven't been great at developing talent neither. Simply put, Habs have a hard time reaching the cap ceiling, even they wanted to. The only time they ever came close was when they knew they had a good team and wanted to add some good players through free agency and completely overpaid to ensure they could get the players.

The Habs will never get to a point where they'll not be able to afford a player they want because they have no cap space due to guys like Weber and Price costing too much. If it was New York or Dallas or San Jose or something, that's a different story but for Montreal the odds are incredibly low of that being the case.

Not to mention that there are a plethora of ways of deal with big contracts, nearing the end of their term like Price and Webers. If ever the Habs desperately need cap space fast for X reasons, they'll deal with it at that time. Its important to make the distinction between being overpaid and being a "cap dump". Price and Weber are simply overpaid but they are still good players.

If the Habs CBO Price and Weber, they'll be out of their top dman and their #1 goalie. That's not what CBO's are for. They're for the players with big contracts that no longer have a place on the team. We're not talking about guys like Lucic or Ericksson or Ladd etc where the teams would rather just not have those players on the team anymore if they had a choice, regardless of cap hit.

So no one has to worry about Price and Weber's contracts when they are in their late 30's....... they won't hinder the Habs from being a better team than they'd be without them. If ever it gets to the point where Price is not even good enough to be backup goalie and Weber can't even skate anymore and the Habs need cap space, they'll figure it out.

CBO'ing both of them now would be like giving away your 3 year old car because in 10 years the car will be scrap...... deal with the scrap yard when the car is compete scrap. Not when its still running perfectly and looks good but has a couple bumps and scratches.
