The New Habs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>Why, if you are Anaheim, do you trade Zegras out for a chance to draft another Zegras? We already hit with Zegras, we risk missing with 6OA, Anaheim has no chance to win the trade, at best they break even, at worst they trade Zegras for a bust.
So no, doesn't get it done. It's not like Dach who was a reclamation project when MTL bought him.</div></div>
I'm not the author of this AGM but I get the sense you hold Zegras in much higher regard than most fans of other teams. I don't think most view him as an offensive superstar that's simply limited by the team he's on but instead see him as an undeniably skilled but flawed playmaker (whether ultimately at C or W). I can infer that some of this may be the result of your perception that other team's fans have been undervaluing Zegras and, given some of what I've seen, I can agree. However, I think it's a disproportionate response to call a swap for a 6th overall pick "at best a break even".
As for what you'd stand to win, there are a number of high-end prospects likely available that can fill a variety of roles ANA might have better use of. Whether it be a RD like Levshunov, a powerforward like Lindstrom (though you have McTavish & Gauthier), an elite goal scorer like Eiserman, etc. Further, swapping Zegras for another high-end ELC contract likely better aligns with when the team is likely to start competing (~2 to 3 years once the young D establish themselves) and allows extra cap flexibility in the medium-term future. Sure there's some risk, but there are plenty of ways for ANA to win such a trade and any suggestion otherwise strikes me as being willfully blind to them.

Ehh no he's not. He's missed six games this season, and not all of those were due to a healthy scratch. In what world is a guy with 47 goals in 124 NHL games a cap dump? Was he a salary clear? Sure, they had to fit Lindholm somehow. Did he hold a reduced value from six months ago? Okay, sure. That does not = cap dump.
People overuse terms way too often.

Aren’t those pretty similar in value? A 6th overall pick and a young, late 1st round RD vs last year’s 5th overall pick and what’s likely an early 2nd rounder?

I understand the reasoning on Allen, but I doubt they target a goalie with any sort of term. There is too much uncertainty with Hart. I think it's likely they stick with Peterson or look to the waiver wire to help.

Monahans trade value
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Gofnut999</b></div><div>At the deadline, probably not far off.
Won’t be Boston. Not paying that for someone they don’t need and <strong>has been PP dependent for production while being lousy 5v5</strong>.</div></div>
This is definitely the narrative of those claiming he's not worth much. and there's "some" level of truth to it, but it's clearly over exaggerated.
Monahan plays on the 1st PP untit for MTL and has 9 PP pts. Looking at his 5V5 stats, he's producing at a rate of a 3rd line Center, so claiming he's dependent on the PP for production is not entirely true. He has negative possession metrics at 5V5 but starts 60% of the time in the defensive zone (so he's used as the Habs primary defensive center) on one of the league's worst teams. So being "lousy" at 5V5 is clearly misleading.
Boston might not have Monahan as their top priority for a Center (most likely they are targeting Lindholm), but it wouldn't surprise me if they focus on Monahan if they miss out on Lindholm.

You don't have to put up points to be a 5v5 contributor, dude's outshooting and out-chancing his opposition in every playoff run participated going back to 2018.
Outscored his opposition in every playoff run apart from the Devils one also.
The Devils and the Habs scratching Tatar in their respective runs where nothing but poor management decisions.
Having Tatar on the ice instead of guys like Lazar, Byron and Wood would've given the Habs and the Devils better chances at winning then deciding to scratch him.
Why don't you go have a banana and take a nap and see if you can't sleep all that snark off champ.</div></div>
you can just look at a stat sheet and base 100% of your decisions off of it. Byron was outplaying him period in the playoffs. love tatar but he showed no heart. everybody was giving their 100% and he was being a passenger on the ice. i hope you he can turns thing around, but the scratch was definitly deserved in the playoff. hockey is a system game and you have to follow it.

This is the part I think most of the people saying it's a bad trade for Montreal are missing. Hughes made a trade to do right by a player, which other players considering signing with Montreal in the future will see. Sometimes it's not about squeezing value out of a player.
