Is McTavish moveable

Created by: jonh514
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 20, 2023
Published: Aug. 20, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I've been a big supporter of Mason McTavish since his WJC performances. I see something in the kid I really believe in. That being said, he's kind of low on the center depth chart in Anaheim behind Carlsson, Zegras, and Strome.

Is there a world where the Habs could acquire him, even if it's an overpay?
Trades
ANA
  1. Beck, Owen
  2. Farrell, Sean
  3. 2024 1st round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Most say Beck is the top 2-way center in the OHL and one of the best in the CHL. Perfect future 3rd line center behind Carlsson & Zegras who can move up the lineup in a pinch

Sean Farrell was a top 3 scorer in the NCAA this past season and has played big for team USA in WC and during the Olympics. Projected top 6 LW.

1st is unprotected and the Habs are expected to be last in their division this year, with or without McTavish.

So 5 A & B-level assets for 1 A-level asset?

I don't believe Anaheim wants to move him.
If they do. It won't be as cheap as 2 b prospects and a first

Fair enough. Do you see him being moved to the wing? Did he play wing or center last season?

Zegras will move to the wing leaving Carlsson and McTabish as our 1C and 2C

McTavish did not look great on the wing last season, sort of list at times not knowing what he should do — guy is a center

Verbeek has already emphasized that Carlsson is his ‘big center’ so no way he moves and he also has said he sees Z as the guy moving to wing out of the 3

It might be a fair trade, but I can't agree with your logic. Teams are better to have (and I hate this numbering system). ! C, and two 2 Cs, rather than 1C, 2C, and 3C.

I mean no one is untradable but if you move him it's for a very specific piece you need for the ducks rebuild.

Anyone is movable but zegras and strome could be moved to wing and that solves the jam at center. Strome would be moved altogether before McTavish due to age. 20 year old McTavish fits Anaheims competitor window alot better than a 30 year old strome. McTavish produced on par with strome last season. Strome is what he is and mctavish still hasnt reached his peak.

Youd have to offer something truly outlandish to pull McTavish away from Anaheim right now and this doesnt rise to that.

No. McTavish isn't available. Why do you always want players you can't have?

Isn't that basically the foundation of ACGM? No one wants to sit around bickering about whether the Habs will have to pay to dump Hoffman (turns out we got a 2nd and a 4th for Hoffman, Pitlick and 2.3M x 2 cap relief!). We want to dream about acquiring stars

I guess it beats talking about potential Jeff Petry trades.

This offer does not move the needle for Anaheim. They have good young player, why set themlselves back to 2024 draft looking for good young player then ?

I would have guessed it was obvious, but Anaheim would get 3 "good young players".

Fair enough if you think the offer does not make sense. Thanks for participating in the discussion.

Just wait until next season. Detroit went a little nuts and I think they will be selling Chiarot & Petry next year.

@Czu8iks hits the nail on the head: Let's suppose for argument's sake that the youngster drafted with that 2024 first turns out to be every bit as good as McTavish. What's the upside for Anaheim having essentially moved a McTavish-level player back three seasons? Two semi-developed prospects? And then there's the very appreciable risk that the 2024 pick doesn't turn out to be a McTavish-level prospect.

I'll add a couple of things while we're at it. McTavish certainly isn't behind Zegras or Strome at center. Strome is a stop gap type of guy that will have a small role on the team in 2-3 years when McTavish really starts to shine. He (Strome) already plays often on the wing.

Nate Gaucher is better than Owen Beck.

Sean Farrell is 5'9". The talent is there but the size that Pat Verbeek covets isn't.

I don't see either of those prospects being of much interest to Anaheim in the context of trading a core piece like McTavish.

Possible buyout?
