Alot of fans would agree with that, it appears the Jets don't value Ehlers and his style of play as much as they should.

Possibly, but if that RHD makes what Ehlers makes you can't sign both Toffoli and Monohan.

Problem with a Schmidt deal is that he has a no move clause, & the teams he'd likely be willing to go to have little cap room. If you have to eat salary to trade him why not just buy him out?

Might be able to get a 2nd instead of a 3rd. But if you look at the most recent deadlines similar valued players are even going for less. I think if you want a better prospect for Ehlers that may be all you get.

Sorry to see Dillon go but understand better to give Heinola a shot and save some cap. Retaining DeMelo is the best move on here.</div></div>
Habs go to the next level with that deal, but they can trade Ehlers at the next deadline for more assets or resign him.

Jets 2023 offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Birtle34</b></div><div>What frustrates me with pld to mtl trades are so many, don’t take into account that the move pretty much shuts Winnipeg’s window, they chased a viable 2c between little/stastny/hays and now helly/scheifele/wheeler are either aged out or contract time. Winnipeg is in a kind of unique situation where they can’t get overly old, there’s no ufas to save them, and a prolonged rebuild would be rather rough on fanbase. So random guys with term that possibly could be flipped for less. Isn’t ideal. Trying to replace what you’re losing doesn’t really work either. So ideally there is youth with team control, and draft picks, drafted as jets. In any value coming back in a Dubois trade. Some token throw ins to make cap but not for any amount of value really. Some of those lengthy veteran contracts are really a non starter for Winnipeg. Now that’s a few lines too long of a rant lol</div></div>
There is no more window in Wpg, it closed once Buff quit. You don't win Cups with All Stars, its Hall of Fame level players, only way Wpg can find that crowd is through the draft. I think Wpg fans will accept a rebuild if the NEW GM and current owner are honest about it.

The Rebuild
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>No, we're not interested in paying a first rounder, a top prospect and a roster player for one year of Hellebuyck. Jets fans may not want to hear this, but he's not worth that. Nor do we have to include Petersen in the deal except that it's the only way we could fit Hellebuyck's cap hit under the ceiling next season, so I guess that there's no way we'll be getting him and you'll have to find some other destination for him before he leaves in 2024.</div></div>
Why would it have to be one year? I am pretty sure both sides would be interested in an extension. Rentals like Korpisalo who has been a middling goalie his entire career, and Gavrikov who is a 2nd pair D man and they went for a 1st and a 3rd, how could a Vezina winner in his prime not go for just slightly more, even if its for one full season?

Not untrue today, but this is a deadline deal next season when every contender adds vet D depth, whether its the Stars or another contender he should go for a 3rd at that time.

Pretty sure any Sabre prospect would be available for the right price, especially for a Vezina calibre goalie in his prime that you could afford to extend, or they could just keep
Collecting prospects I guess and staying in between the contenders and the bottom feeders of the league (see the Jets and Flames)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Burnout</b></div><div>Schneider is a very good example as to why goalies are not as valuable now as they were 10 years ago. MAF won the Vezina and was traded immediately after he won for Mikael Hakkarainen. Hellebuyck definitely has much more value than MAF did, but a year away from free agency and looking for a long term contract he is not going to return a prospect in Luke Hughes tier, let alone adding a first. If you're getting into that kind of offer territory, you might as well look for a younger goalie with more control.</div></div>
Good recall, what was different about the MAF trade was that he was now a backup, had lost his mojo, perceived as past his prime, and made 8 million. Different situation than Helly. In MAF defence he found his game again, but that was the reality at the time of that trade.

I doubt the Devils trade LH, yes he's good, but he's his sibling is their best player, so yeah no go.....BUT, Kuemper isnt Helly, Helly could and should fetch a 1st (if its a contender its a late one), a grade A prospect (possibly someone taken in the top 10), and possibly more.</div></div>

But that would probably be the single biggest, if not one of the biggest returns for a goalie EVER in the NHL. Considering Hughes was drafted 4th overall in 2021. Hellybuck is a wonderful goalie but he only has one year left.
Zero chance NJD trades Hughes for 1 year of a goalie.</div></div>
Aside from Patrick Roy decades ago, I dont think a Vezina winner in his prime has been traded, there is nothing to base this on. Cory Schneider was a very good goalie in his prime traded at the draft for the 9th overall selection (Horvat) several years ago. He wasnt a vezina winner. I think one of the eastern teams that doesn't win the Cup this season, and if its because of inconsistent goaltending, teams like Carolina for example might think Helly is the missing piece. They might be willing to give up something along the lines of what was suggested here.

However, you need to adjust your expectations of what your players would return in trades, as all of these are significantly slanted in favor of Winnipeg.</div></div>
Take a look at the most recent trade deadline, trading stars for future assets usually is slanted in favor of the team trading the best player. I would imagine, anyone trading for any of PLD, Scheif, or Helly would have an eye towards a contract extension before the trade, which would increase the return.

I like the concept, only way to build a winner in Wpg is to sell, add draft capitol, tank, and get in the top 3 for a couple of drafts and rebuild.

The Kings will likely try to hold on to Petersen one more season to make his buyout easier (unless a better trade comes up). Petersen makes 5 million in the AHL, I think a Vezina winner in his prime with no signs of regression is a "better trade", or am I missing something?
The Kings will likely keep Petersen and Copley next season, unless they can find a good goalie who would sign for $2-3M - Might be a firable offence for your GM
Free agents include: Samsonov, Varlamov, Bishop, Andersen, Talbot, Jarry, Nedeljkovic, Blackwood, Raanta, Korpisalo - I dont see any Vezina winners in their prime in this list
In short Hellebuyck would just be a temporary patch even at 50% retained, there is no point in losing your best prospect for a rental. Would you trade Perfetti for a one year rental? - Yes, IF the Jets were a goalie away from being a Cup contender, and that goalie was a Vezina winner in his prime, and willing to re-sign, I would trade Perfetti or whatever prospect that team wanted.</div></div>

I agree this could be a landing spot for Helly as well if hes made available. I think whomever trades for him he'd extend if a contender and its not a frozen tundra like Wpg.

They might, but honestly if they think they are a contender they will need a reliable goalie, they would get one year at a reasonable hit with one of the best, and easily be in a position to extend.
