Team: 2023-24 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 26, 2023
Published: Mar. 26, 2023

Description
Rebuild spanning next 12 months with the hope this team can get a top 5 pick in 2024, and be in the running for 1st overall in 2025. Only way a team in Wpg can be a contender is by collecting draft picks, preferably top 3 overall, as they cannot get elite level talent to waive NMC in trades or sign them as UFA's.

Stanley offers as much value to the Habs as Armia offers to the Jets. We are just too full at LD to consider taking him back.

I would however consider an package of the Habs pick + Kidney for PLD + the Jets pick.

Dilly isn’t really what we’re missing on the back end. Could use some more offense and that’s honestly just a matter of waiting for one or both of Harley and Nils to gain the coach’s trust

Not untrue today, but this is a deadline deal next season when every contender adds vet D depth, whether its the Stars or another contender he should go for a 3rd at that time.

Probably need a scheifele extension worked into this summer also, or possibly another deal, cutting this deep might make sense to cut a little deeper and possibly trade high on Connor/ehlers or morrissey, but I like your build.

Good call, I forgot to add a 24 deadline deal for 55, add another 1st to the list

Hellebuyck to LA makes so much sense, but I wondered if a RD coming back could be the target return. (?) Maybe Grans and another prospect and a conditional pick dependant on LA's playoff success perhaps. (??)

While Driedger wouldn't fetch much in trade, I don't think Seattle should (or would) "pay" a team to take his last season. Driedger is coming off of surgery. Sure he had a disappointing 1st season with Seattle last year, but because Francis committed to him so early, Driedger will be given another shot, IMO. I mean, Jones is gone and all Driedger has to do is outplay Grubauer, which shouldn't be an issue if the last 2 seasons are any indicator! Also, really don't see Seattle trading Geekie just to remove Driedger. Geekie is Francis' boy! He snatched him up in Expansion over Bean and Niederreiter, and while I'd never suggest that Geekie has the same ceiling or anything, I think it's fair to look at Tage Thompson as a caution to GM's to remain patient with big, young centermen with upside!

I can see some version of the rest of the deals, and have really nothing to comment on the PLD to Habs deal. There's been enough of those already on here!!

Nicely done.

If rebuilding, I’m so tempted to ask the price of Connor. Personally would be okay sending Laf, Chytil and a 1st and maybe something else to get it done. No clue what the cap would look like for us though. Then again you guys probably wouldn’t be interested.

If Winnipeg is expected to take back a bad contract in a Helle trade, there needs to be more compensation like that. He's a former Vezina winner, and the most important player for the Jets the last three seasons. Turcotte's history issues at the start of his development should have people worried he may becoming another Nolan Patrick.

Kings fans may not want to hear this, but for trading Helle and taking on the Peterson contract, one of Clarke, or Byfield will need to come the other way. A prime Hellebuyck is a 1st rounder, a top prospect, and a roster player. Add to that if you want to send a bad contract the other way.

No, we're not interested in paying a first rounder, a top prospect and a roster player for one year of Hellebuyck. Jets fans may not want to hear this, but he's not worth that. Nor do we have to include Petersen in the deal except that it's the only way we could fit Hellebuyck's cap hit under the ceiling next season, so I guess that there's no way we'll be getting him and you'll have to find some other destination for him before he leaves in 2024.

Why would it have to be one year? I am pretty sure both sides would be interested in an extension. Rentals like Korpisalo who has been a middling goalie his entire career, and Gavrikov who is a 2nd pair D man and they went for a 1st and a 3rd, how could a Vezina winner in his prime not go for just slightly more, even if its for one full season?

"Slightly more" is just what Kevin Fiala cost -- a prime prospect (Brock Faber = Alex Turcotte) and a first-round draft pick, so I agree with you completely. It's the "plus a roster player" that I disagree with, because we'd have to trade away another roster player to make room for Hellebuyck's cap hit. About the most we could add would be Sean Walker.

That Kings trade seems light if the Jets are taking Petersen.

Too much for Barron, he should get like $925K or something, these stonehands bottom sixers shouldn't be getting more then $1M.

You'd need to add compensation going back to the Jets for taking Armia as a cap dump.
