I know the Habs shouldn't be going after rentals but as a Habs fan I'd do this

Habs accept.

WPG could get more for Ehlers.

Agreed. I'd be easily willing to add a B prospect and to improve the 3rd to a 2nd for example... and that's coming from a fan of a team who is by no means looking to buy on players, especially rentals. Ehlers would be a nice veteran here and he could either be sold at the deadline or extended if he likes it here.

It’s fair value but I don’t think Ehlers helps the Habs take the next step. Sorry to see Dillon go but understand better to give Heinola a shot and save some cap. The Schmidt buyout is a bit of a kick in the gonads, maybe better to try and trade him with some retained $ with a sweetener ?
Retaining DeMelo is the best move on here.

If Ehlers or KC goes its to get a equal level RD....Not a prospect

Easy no for Winnipeg. Ehlers would get more as a pure rental than a couple meh prospects.

Habs go to the next level with that deal, but they can trade Ehlers at the next deadline for more assets or resign him.

wonder if instead of the jets buying out schmidt, he get's traded with ehlers and the habs buy him out, then he could go back to Winnipeg for a lesser caphit. That buyout penalty wouldn't hurt montreal

Might be able to get a 2nd instead of a 3rd. But if you look at the most recent deadlines similar valued players are even going for less. I think if you want a better prospect for Ehlers that may be all you get.

Problem with a Schmidt deal is that he has a no move clause, & the teams he'd likely be willing to go to have little cap room. If you have to eat salary to trade him why not just buy him out?

Possibly, but if that RHD makes what Ehlers makes you can't sign both Toffoli and Monohan.

I'm not sure they could get much more considering he'd be a rental, but I have no idea why they'd want to move Ehlers in favour of Monahan and Toffoli.

Alot of fans would agree with that, it appears the Jets don't value Ehlers and his style of play as much as they should.

It's a reasonable asking price but montreal don't need a 2nd line 29yo pending UFA winger

Yeah, Ehlers would likely get a 1st and decent prospect or 2nd and good prospect. It won't just be a struggling defenseman prospect that will need to pass waivers and a meh bottom 6 prospect along with a nothing pick.

He's not taking them to the next level, having a healthy dach and newhook and a 20yo slaf will

I don't think the Habs are gonna be willing to move Beck, not saying it's not worth it just don't see Habs wanting to move Beck period. Dach is a huge gamble with lots of injury concerns still and Beck is our most promising center prospect, so unless we make a move for another 2C this offseason, I doubt the Habs move Beck.

Habs fan...actually like this deal quite a bit. Ehlers may not fit the timeline, but I think they want to add offensive punch, and he fits the bill and hasn't been able to establish a top line role in Winnipeg.

but if he's going somewhere just to be bought out it wouldn't matter if he wants to play for that team, he'll be a free agent

I don’t like trading Barron at all, but Ehlers is worth it. Will bring experience to the young core
