Canadian Problems with American Solutions
Yeah, actually I meant to include PIT's 2025 1st in this, managed to forget it. I'll fix that.
Reilly and Graves are both eventual flip pieces; Cap fillers and picks-in-waiting, essentially. Chicago can absolutely afford to absorb the money hit next year.
Sergei Murashov is a stud goalie prospect who should be ready right around the same time Chicago is ready as a franchise.

Mitch Marner Middle-Man
The core problem with Mitch Marner and the real reason there's so much negative noise around him is just how <em>incomparable</em> they really are where it seems to count.

This is actually one of the things I very much like about this site. This is a horrible idea, but it might lead to a good one eventually. We can 100% take 1 year of cap space for the right price. Open up options for TOR to make something happen for Marner because of this NMC.</div></div>
A bare minimum 100% of the made-up nonsense I post on this site are exactly those horrible ideas I am absolutely sure make no sense on their face but feel might contain some buried nugget of genuinely interesting possibility. If I can't get something out of my head but I also can't make it work, that's when I show up here to throw it out and see where it goes.

Yeah, the Leafs need more. But this is the part of the year where the rest of the league feasts on Toronto's corpse! A time-honoured tradition. You don't like it, be a fan of a different team. ;)

Post-Cup Crunch
Stephenson as 4C is probably someone you move on from, but what a lot of depth you'd have at that position if you could keep him around.
I think Hanifin can fit. Move Howden and/or don't sign Stephenson, fill those slots more cheaply, and you're there.
What does it cost to bring Marchessault back?

Yeah, tbh I kinda expect him to stay in Calgary. And I expect Graves to stay in Pitt. I'd certainly rather he not, tho.

Tank for Top Ten Protection
I prefer keeping the pick this year and giving up next year's because I want that prospect playing for the big team as soon as possible, and that's it. I'm not particularly concerned about the difference between a 9th this year or a 5th the next. I just want to get that ball rolling as quickly as possible.

Why limit yourself and your ability to squeeze as much as possible out of the Cap Space you've got? Those deals don't have to be the only things those teams do here.

Playing the Middle-Man
I'm pretty sure Graves would do well in Calgary. Not only that, but he matches something Calgary would definitely like to get in any return for Hanifin: an NHL player in their prime years with good term left. Calgary will need more than Graves going back of course, but using Pitt as a mere third wheel lets whoever else is involved avoid giving up a real roster player they might want for a playoff run.

That's how I view this. I think it's actually a more sane trade on NJD's end of things. PIT retaining that much for that long really necessitates a 1st coming back.

Could take or leave that trade on the quality of Graves, but the Pens can use those picks more (if a trade like that can actually happen).
Graves has not been good at all. With the retention, it makes sense to consider keeping him as the 3LD instead of Ludvig, and then just getting a 3RD who's more around league minimum. So that trade is in no way integral to this whole suite of changes. I'm just very ready to move on from him if it nets some interesting futures.

Honestly I just feel uncertain about that group. I wonder about consistency of performance, and I wouldn't say no to a cheap upgrade like Ned, considering how well he's performed this year behind a very bad Penguins defense.
Same goes for Carolina. I think they could both be meaningfully improved by the addition of Ned, and he's available for practically nothing against the cap.

I'm not totally sure I agree with that, but Ned could easily go to a number of other teams, so that's fine. We'll change it up.

Guentzel and Tanev
I feel like a lot of Pens fans really overvalue two or three months of Guentzel, and also undervalue the benefits of just getting a deal done, and further undervalue the benefits of using his value to move extra cap space out the door.
The Tane trade needs a 1st but IDK if Edmonton does that (they should tho).

TBL would definitely have to find a place to move Graves in the off-season, but I think that should be possible on their end.
And for a chance to push again with a low buy on Jake?
As for the Pen's return, the "immediate improvement" piece in that trade for the Pens is actually all the cap space created by trading Graves.

I can't disagree, actually, and I'm also highly suspicious of this LAK trade.
Not my best work. Good thing I just stole it. I take no responsibility for things I say on the internet.
But it would be truly great for the Pens if they could move on from the Smith and Graves contracts.

From the Pen's angle I'd do this in a heartbeat, but it does sort of sound like trading Jake isn't going to happen, unfortunately.

TBH, I don't need Saad and don't even want him that much, that trade is mostly about finding someplace for Smith. We could recreate that sort of trade somewhere else.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Fail4Nail</b></div><div>Edmonton accepts, hangs up the phone and doesn't look back.</div></div>
Yeah, that trade is automatic for Edmonton. And I'd still do it. I feel like Pitt has to do something along those lines and now is the best chance they have to do it. I don't know why anyone other than Dubas himself would say no, and I think he'd be wrong to stop it. The deal could be even better for PIT.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jbc149</b></div><div>For 9 mil per, you sign and keep Jake. Pit could get more from Vancouver or any other team if they trade him.</div></div>
Keep Jake and get no return at all for trading him, or trade Jake for even more than I put down and still have the cap space to make a $9M signing? They should trade Jake. They should trade a lot of people while they can.

Why not? Seems like a pretty good move for them, frankly! Bury Reaves and eat 200k in space for two years instead of eating the full term of that Graves contract.
