You've got the order of operations backwards, there.

Why the Graves hate?</div></div>
He's had a bad first few months and he's definitely dragging down his D-partners right now. He's playing like a 5/6D and getting paid too much for a capped out team. I've been trying to get hired as the Pen's Interim GM for months just so I could ship him to the KHL. I'm sure they could make good use of him on the Vladivostok Admirals.

Absolutely silly, but: Ovi needs a new Backstrom or he's just driftwood on the ice, and Crosby would be an upgrade, one of the few out there. Ovi on Crosby's wing is about as close as a lock for the Gretzky record as I can imagine.
So, in an alternate universe where people on both sides could get over all the emotional baggage of something this insane, I'd actually say go for it. Both teams are pretty gassed and it would just be a really cool conclusion to the best rivalry of their generation, and one of the best in NHL history writ large.

Bertuzzi and Monahan
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Flynnster</b></div><div>Montreal get is little light a 32 yr old and a 2nd round , hmm nope a 2nd and a quality player sounds about right. The days of Montreal loading up on old players is over unless it’s Sid the kid.</div></div>
Sid for Monahan straight up, then! Where do I sign?! Noel or similar needs to go to make the money work, unless Habs feel like using up their last retention spot for a trade of this scale. Maybe they would, IDK, but I wasn't going to put that idea out there.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JuanDamienNebraska</b></div><div>That Bertuzzi trade is abysmal for the Pens.</div></div>
Really? Bertuzzi at 3RW sounds a lot more useful to me than Graves has been so far, and you get out of it entirely at the end of the year! Leafs fans seem down, I say pull the trigger as fast as you can and see what happens. These two trades plus the Jesse PTO completely remake the bottom six on the fly at the cost of only an underperforming 4D with a big contract, and gives the Pens more bodies for their moribund PP.
Think about the seasons to come as well: if you can get Graves and Acciari off the books that's a whole Guentzel's-worth of money for the next couple years. What's not to like?

Yeah, to be perfectly honest, I almost prefer not to take on Karlsson, keep Petry as the 2RD, and use the cap space on forwards. Petry is by no means bad, and the only real reason to move him now is to create space for a big deal like an EK trade. Maybe you deal Petry next year, depending on how things unfold.

I'd hand you that 2nd, frankly. Having said that, maybe the Pens could just keep Rutta instead of signing Foote. They have the space, at least until Bear is ready, and Bear replaces Rutta anyway.

Are they going to sign both Bertuzzi and Swayman with their $6.2M remaining cap space?
Probably better if they take DeSmith, from that angle, of course. And I guess we could toss them a pick to be nice. But they're pretty cap-starved and every dollar they can scrounge is a dollar they should covet.

Buycker Barby and Bunts
I could definitely stand to have someone other than Bunting for the price, but I do think he's a solid player who can do well for a team as a 3LW who occasionally jumps up as needed. Maybe you try and bring Zucker back for a bit less than that, or maybe you try and get Rico out of ANA with some retention, or just throw your hands in the air and start the season with DOC in the 3LW slot and Gruden playing the bottom wing, just to see what you have for half a season and leave room for a DL snack.

That's beyond the reasonable ceiling for taking on Miller's deal; I was being nice!
I'm going to continue pretending Carter is willing to have his salary paid by someone else while he retires until the season starts and he's still centering the third line. A man's got to be allowed to dream!

Could probably find $900k somewhere in here to retain 50% of DeSmith, but having said that, I feel like there's got to be a team that would take him on full. Or, hell, just send him to WBS, that'll save more than work out retention.

If the Jets don't want DeSmith I'm sure some team somewhere will take him.
Sending Carter to a team that will eat his cap hit for a pick and let him just "retire" on their tab might not be as hard as it seems. Really about how self-aware Carter is when it comes to his real current abilities as a player. I have to hope the Pens' FO can get through to him on this.
