Have you seen Ghost play? He is an elite puck mover and at denying zone entries. It is when the coaches try to shoe horn him into a system that relies on blocking shots and expect him to be able to clear the crease and dominate board battles that he gets in trouble.

Playoff Bound
Shaw missed 64 games in the last three years and had a career year at 27 scoring 47 points. Ghost is coming off his worst year and still scored 37. Two years ago he put up 65 which is a number Shaw has never come close to. The first is nice but you are going to have to give more if you want Ghost. Montreal is the one with a big need for a scoring LHD. And trading him leaves a gaping hole in the Flyers top four. This is a situation where you either over pay or it isn't happening.

As a Flyers fan I don't have a problem with this trade. But remember Michele Therrien is now an assistant with the Flyers. No way Subban is ok working with him again. It could work if the Flyers turned and flipped him somewhere else like Toronto though.

So the Flyers are giving up the two best players, if you want to split hairs two of the three best players, the better draft pick, and eat an extra $10 million in Cap which they can't afford. Seems reasonable.

So basically all the Flyer`s fans reactions to the return being offered for Ghost. Got you. And to be fair I didn't say that Montreal would do this trade. I was just pointing out that this would be the necessary return to make it happen.

I am a little gun shy of Shaw because of how many games he has missed in the past three years. But that would be an interesting trade. I would love to see Morin succeed even if it isn't Philly and Shaw isn't a terrible fit but I definitely don't want the Flyers over paying for him.

Ghost to Montreal Trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Sebybbq</b></div><div>And you overvalue ghost a lot! Gallagher is way more valuable too a team than ghost! Both player are great that not the point but gallagher play every shift with grit! He is tough score tought goal! He is a leader and he enters his prime, ans he is reliable on defence! Ghost his a great puck mover and a great quarterback on pp but he is awful in is zone. A defenceman as for first job too defend and its not is bread and butter soo drouin will bee the player too sacrifice for ghost! But Gallagher will never goo elsewhere of montreal</div></div>
If anything Ghost is still being undervalued because of the tired narrative, mostly pushed by lazy beat writers, that he is awful at defense. He is elite at breaking up zone entries and making quick zone exits when he gets the puck on top of his offensive prowess. What he struggles with, like most smaller defensemen, is board battles and clearing the crease. That doesn't mean he is terrible at defense it just means he needs to play to his strengths and be partnered with a physical defensive defenseman to compliment his skill set. Something the Flyers coaching hasn't really done for him. Two years ago when playing with Provorov his numbers offensively and defensively were that of a high end first pairing defender.
And yes Gallagher is very good. But as I said before the Flyers don't need another LW and Drouin if I remember correctly isn't nearly as effective on the right side. He also doesn't play any defense and for his career scores about the same as Ghost. So if Drouin is the "sacrifice" there would need to be some other assets added to sweeten the pot. Remember Montreal fans are the ones clamoring for Ghost. If you want him you are the ones who need to overpay. That is just reality.

A team that wants to contend can't start the season with a under sized rookie at 2C. I think he will be good but he doesn't have the pedigree to throw him into the deep end like that. Plus the Flyers recently have been slow playing prospects so there is a real chance he starts out in the AHL.

Giroux scores better on wing, especially when on Couturier's wing. The Flyers were forced to put him back at center for part of this year since they would have to use 4Cs in their middle six otherwise.

Fixing the Center position problem for life
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jassan28</b></div><div>Comparing Trouba to Ghost is like comparing Keith to Krug. Philly fans don't want Ghost while Jets fans have no choice. Ghost has about 75% of Trouba's value</div></div>
That's the point. The Jets don't have a choice. Ghost is on a team friendly contract and gives them a puck moving LHD and PP quarterback. Trouba may be a slightly better overall defenseman but he will be more expensive and doesn't seem to want to stay in Winnipeg. Their value is about equal factoring in the contract and Ghost's offense despite what frustrated Flyers fans say about Ghost.
Adding Patrick to the trade is a deal breaker. From the Flyers perspective what does that do to their center depth? Even when the return is worth it, which this definitely isn't, you don't make a trade that opens a huge hole in your lineup. Flyers already need a 2/3C for next year why make it two.

Off-Season Moves
I know the lines aren't set but look at that center depth. And no money left to bring in a free agent to fix it. And Konecny and Provorov still needing to get paid in the off-season. Giroux scores better on the wing and Frost can not be relied on to start his career as a 2C no matter how good his wingers are.

Not arguing the fit but who told you he can't PK? He doesn't get used there often because he is on the first power play unit. When he is given a shot on the PK in the past he has been pretty good.

And Couturier is a perrenial Selke finalist, 1C, who hovers around a point per game (when he doesn't have to carry 4th line plugs on his wing), and a leader in the locker room. And is massively underpaid for three and a half more years. And you threw a cost controlled Ghost in on the deal. I really like Draisaitl...but not that much. Especially with his contract. I'm not saying he is overpaid but teams can only carry so many big contracts and still have room to maneuver under the cap.

Marleau signed that contract after his 35th birthday. So unless I am mistaken there is no cap relief if he retires. I think according to the CBA the only way the Leafs get out from under that contract is trade or LTIR.

Oh yeah I guess you all forgot about that right? :rolleyes
Yeah your right, Pacioretty at age 29, is probably finished in the NHL......</div></div>
Obligatory reminder... Patches is on the last year of his contract. And the same time he is due a new contract the Flyers will also need to hand out deals to Provorov, Konecny, Sanheim, and possibly Simmonds. Picking up Patches guarantees Simmonds is gone. Also saying it is a good deal because Patches has more goals/points than all the players mentioned is a weak argument since by that logic the Habs should trade the Flyers Galchenyuk straight up for Flip since he has more career goals than someone with a decade less experience than him.

Trading Up
Not sure I like the value on the Simmons trade. Tanev can be penciled in for at least 10 to 20 games missed every year. Despite his skill he's just not durable enough to be worth that value in return. I like his game I wish the Flyers had him but I don't want to see them give up assets for somebody who's not going to be there for large parts of the season.
The Chicago trade is interesting. I just don't see it happening unless the Flyers are willing to take a cab dump in return to sweeten the deal which now that they have gotten their cap situation straightened out I'd rather not see them do. Also Chicago's not trading their first pick until after the lottery.

Agree. Tanev has missed 20 + games in each of the last two seasons. And missed at least 10 every season of his career. He has the skill and may be worth what Vancouver fans are asking but he just can't stay healthy for an entire season. I would rather see more value coming back for Simmonds.

Agreed. Flyers who aren't in a position to win this year are not trading a 1st and a blue chip puck moving defensive prospect for a rental. That is a Holmgren trade. Hextall does not part with picks or prospects easily. And even if they sign JVR that closes the door on re-signing Simmonds and is pretty much a wash. It's the same reason the Evander Kane trade talk makes no sense for the Flyers.
