Playoffs - Can it beat the Jackets
Robertson won't be in the lineup. He is there because the Leafs can carry a number of extra bodies and it's a great learning/development opportunity for him. It's also a great opportunity for the Leafs to evaluate him on an extended daily basis going head to head with men as well as have him in their weight room working with their strength coaches everyday.

Playoffs - Can it beat the Jackets
Columbus had a great first half of the season despite losing a ton of talent from last year's team and their starting goalie. They had a terrible last month, won only 3 of 15 games (giving up 52 goals) and were more than likely going to drop out of the playoffs over the final 12 games of the season. So they aren't this defensive juggernaut that people are making them out to be. With that being said in this scenario it's impossible to predict who is going to win any of these series. Who knows, the Leafs could even beat the Bruins!

Is Johnsson Any Good
Healthy he'll be a consistent 40 point guy. Can play LW anywhere on your top 3 lines, but at best should be your 6th or 7th best forward. Plus he's on a good contract for 3 more years, so yeah he's worth more than what you're trying to trade for him. Leafs wouldn't move him unless they are getting a D.

Is this reasonable for Dumba
Dumba is good, but if he's locked in for the next 3 years then Muzzin won't be re-signed. Yeah this makes your D look great for this year, but then you go into the offseason without Muzzin, Kapanan, Lilly, and a couple draft picks that you could have kept by just re-signing Muzzin.

After the Allstar break
Agreed. He's going to be a great player, but he still needs work. The first period last night was the most he's struggled in any of his games this year. I think it would be different if Marincin hadn't stepped in and played well. Lots of Marincin haters out there, and I used to be one of them, but he's been really solid since Muzzin went out. He and Barrie have really looked good together.

I think if Mikheyev wouldn't have been injured Johnsson would be traded before the deadline. With him we have 3 really good lines up front. If we move him we don't have another forward ready to consistently fill that hole (no Spezza is not the answer). I do think Johnsson gets moved in the offseason though. He's signed for 3 more years on a good contract in his mid 20s, is a 20 goal scoring when healthy, and can play on any of your top 3 lines. We should be able to get one or two nice pieces in return.
Next year we would have Hyman, Mikheyev, Engvall as our top 3 LWs.

I don't think there is a deal there between the Leafs and Rangers for Georgiev. He doesn't have that much value to Toronto. If they trade for him he plays 10 or so games this year, re-signs as a RFA and plays 25-35 next year. Then there's a good chance they lose him in the expansion draft. The Leafs aren't going to give up a young 20 goal scorer for 30-40 games of a backup goalie. But I agree he's worth more than Bracco (the guy only has 3 goals in the AHL this year) and a pick. Georgiev is ready to compete for a starting job or at least a 50/50 split. There are better fits out there for him and the Rangers.

The smartest option
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TMLSage</b></div><div>I think the solution to Rielly's injury is actually Sandin and thus do not think the Leafs need to do the Martinez trade. Everything happens for a reason and its the Sandman's time and opportunity to walk in and play immediately like the top pairing defenceman he actually has shown he is with the Marlies and recent World Junior tournament. Keefe and Dubas know what the Sandman can do and also agree that they think that Lilly is also close for a promotion but do not want to leave the Marlies too short handed with defenceman.</div></div>
I agree that Martinez is not the answer. My unpopular opinion is after this week send Sandin back down to the Marlies for the rest of the year, unless other extreme circumstances require a recall. Don't burn a year of his ELC. He's good, I really like him, but with Muzzin coming back we don't have to use him. And there's another guy on the Leafs blueline that has stepped up, played substantial minutes and has been effective. I know Marincin is usually everyone's whipping boy, but he's actually played very well. Muzzin/Holl, Dermott/Ceci, Marinin/Barrie, Lilly as the 7th if they need him. He can spend most of his time still playing with the Marlies and the Leafs can take him on the road in case something happens.

Keep the draft pick. The Leafs aren't exactly flush with 1st and 2nd rounders over the next couple years. Those picks will be the guys filling holes when we need to clear cap space and can't afford to re-sign all of the guys like Kapanan, Mikheyev, Engvall, Sandin, Lilly, in a few years.
Also, if we trade for Georgiev, regardless of what we give up, there's a very good chance he only plays 5-10 games this year, 25-30 next year, and then we lose him in the expansion draft. He's not going to take over the starter role from Anderson. He's a good backup. NYR fans think they're going to get Kapanan or Johnsson for a backup goalie that will play 30-40 games, give me a break.

I also think you can afford to trade for a real defenseman but thats just me.</div></div>
Lilly has no limit, he can't slide another year. He's not in the lineup tonight, hopefully we seen him before the end of the week. Sounds like Muzzin will start skating in the next couple days and should be back after the all star break. I just don't think it's worth it to move an asset to acquire a rental D, and then move another asset to have someone take on Ceci's contract to make the cap work when Reilly is back. Is whatever rental D they get going to be much of an upgrade over Ceci anyways?

Leafs and Sharks fan discussion- Brenden Dillon
The play of both Sandin and Lilly this week will determine a lot of what the Leafs do before the trade deadline. Muzzin should be back after the break. Burning year 1 of Sandin's ELC seems inevitable at this point. Left side of Muzzin, Dermott, Sandin, right side of Holl, Barrie, Ceci/Lilly. All reports from the Marlies is that Lilly has been excellent, especially lately, so let's see what he's got. Don't make a move without given the next guy up internally a shot to fill the role.
Then we add a hopefully healthy and rested Reilly for the last 10 games and playoffs.
I wouldn't be giving up much in any move before the deadline. The way this season has gone (bad start, coaching change, injury after injury, inconsistent play, terrible backup goalie, awful defensive play) I don't really see how this season ends with a Stanley Cup in TO. Keep your assets, keep building towards the future, don't force moves.

It would be cool if people on here watched the games for the sake of watching the games instead of looking for reasons to reinforce their opinions on players. Yeah Ceci is better than Rielly and Barrie. I am seriously getting to the point where I don't want to cheer for the Leafs for 2 reasons.
1) troll nation is the worst. Half of hockey fans only want to see TO fail. They hate the Leafs more than they love hockey and spend all their time chirping. It's pathetic.
2) It seems that half of leaf fans are as fickle ridiculous and petty as the trolls.
The ideal that many don't want to play in TO due to the media nonsense is definitely true. Look at Rielly for example, he is without a doubt a top echelon defenceman but now the mob says he sucks defensively and now half of Leafs nation watches him only looking for mistakes. McDavid pulls off an insane move and Rielly sucks, it wasn't because the best player in the league does a move only he can pull off that would have left anyone in his dust, it's because Rielly sucks. What a joke. Humanity is failing in everyway.</div></div>
I said Ceci is the Leafs 3rd best "DEFENDER". You think Reilly and Barrie are better at keeping the puck out of the Leafs net than Ceci? I watch every game. I watch Reilly get beat almost every night in 1 on 1 situations. I know Connor McDavid is the best player in the world. I also know that even when the best player in the world is coming down 1 on 1 against any NHL Dman with very little speed that he 99 out of 100 he shouldn't even get a decent shot on goal.
If you think Reilly is good defensively you know very little about hockey. His footwork is terrible. He pivots and crosses over when he doesn't need to, putting himself in vulnerable positions. For a Dman that skates as well as he does, his gap control is often poor (another reason McDavid was able to beat him). I like Reilly, but he should be better. I like the Leafs D core, I don't think they should make any changes. If they're all healthy and their all playing well they are good enough.

Leafs fans don't like to hear it, but Ceci is their 3rd best defender right now, after Muzzin and Holl. They need him, and I think they'll keep him. Yes, Dermott will be a better D and should probably be playing more, but there's a reason Keefe usually plays him 13-14 minutes a night while playing Ceci 20 minutes. Since Ceci/Reilly has been broken up, Ceci has been very good both 5 on 5 and on the pk. Reilly on the other hand has continued to struggle defensively. McDavid isn't the only one walking around him 1 on 1, it's becoming a regular occurrence. Ceci's play is not a problem, Reilly's is.

When Freddy was 20 he was playing in Denmark and nobody was projecting him to be an NHL starting goalie.

2020 Cap Crunch
The Leafs look like they're set up well for next season. Sure they won't have a ton of cap space to go spend on big name UFAs, but I don't think that's really part of their plan. Moving forward they'll have no bad contracts like (Marleau, Ceci, etc.) that they can't move if need be. Yeah they'll need to fill a top 4 D role by either re-signing Muzzin, trading a winger like Johnsson/Kapanen, or signing a UFA. The Leafs biggest problem will be losing a really good player in the expansion draft. So you add another top 4 d, you have Reilly, Holl, Dermott, and whoever the new Dman is and you can only protect 3. Without any other moves they'll have Matthews, Tavares, Nylander, Marner, Johnsson, Kapanen, Kerfoot, Mikheyev, and Engvall, protecting only 7. Good problem to have I guess. If these guys are all still on the team I protect Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Kapanen, Mikheyev, Engvall up front. Depending who the new top 4 D is an their contract situation I would honestly considering making Reilly available, assuming his play does not improve. But that's a discussion for another day

What I can see happening
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PleaseBanMeForMyOwnGood</b></div><div>You know what I see happening? Pretty much nothing. They are the hottest team in the league and the more they play under Keefe the more they seem to be tightening up. I think Hutch is quieting the the concerns over the backup for now and as long as he can give Andersen on day off every few games, they are fine. Upgrading over Ceci would be nice but its not really a grave concern either. The forward ranks just need to get healthy so no concerns there.
I am confident this team is already elite, some more time will be needed to figure out exactly what if anything needs to be done.</div></div>
Mostly agree. It's nice to theorize the big moves on here and think the Leafs will make a blockbuster and be "all in" this year, but realistically they have to really like what they've seen since the coaching change. "But they need to upgrade their D" Their D has actually been pretty solid. Holl/Muzzin are obviously solid, Reilly/Barrie seem to playing better defensively, and Dermott/Ceci have been really good the last month. Oh, and Marincin has been pretty darn good since filling in for Muzzin, even the biggest Marincin haters have to admit that.

Future of the Leafs - Part 1
I'm guessing Shattenkirk is probably not happening. And I hope it doesn't, but they will need to sign a D to play in their top 4. Their forward depth is ridiculously good when all are healthy, so maybe we see Dubas move a forward for a D with some term instead of overpaying a UFA or going bargain hunting. If Dermott gets $3.5m it better be for 8 years. He plays 5-8 minutes less a night than Holl and usually against 3rd/4th lines compared to the tougher minutes Holl has taken on. I think we'll see a fair 2 year bridge deal around $2m per year. It will be interesting to see if Spezza comes back. He filled a need this past summer to add some C depth, but with the play of some of the younger guys the last month he would only be taking a spot that could easily be filled by Brooks/Gauthier. Best case, Leafs win the cup this year and Spezza retires a champion!

Right now probably a lot. I think they're excited about his potential more than anything. This version of Leafs management believes in patience, development, and building their team within. Moving him so early goes against that. He's good, not great, but very raw and has the potential to become a really good top 6 forward. He's not untouchable, but I'd say a young top 4 D with term/team control on a good contract. If I had that player on my team I wouldn't trade him for Mikheyev.

Over the last year and half I would have loved to see Nylander traded more than few times, but right now I'm a huge fan. IMO he was the best player on the ice the other night against Buffalo. His puck control/protection/patience is awesome. He was competing for pucks, winning battles, and making plays. Matthews is a shooter, he needs a play maker like Nylander to make him better and they do work well together. He is the exact type of player Dubas/Keefe need for their system. Mikheyev/Kapanen don't even come close to having the abilities that Nylander has and for someone to suggest Bracco is a better option is, well, hilarious.

Saad has a nasty side? He's never had more than 20 PIMS in a season. Has 0 NHL fights. He's thrown 24 hits in 34 games this year. I don't think the Leafs would have any interest in Johnnson for Saad straight up. If any winger that slots next to Matthews and Nylander is going to get 40 points then why trade Johnnson for Saad, why not plug anyone else you have in that spot and trade Johnnson to fill another need? I think the Leafs management does thing Johnnson is good or they wouldn't have signed him to a 4 year contract 6 months ago. I'm not sure what games you're watching if you think the Matthews line has been just as good the last 5 games without Johnnson as they were with him. Of the two wingers that have filled that role, Aberg was sent to the minors and Kapanen is being ripped by pretty much everyone for not being a good fit with them.
