Not having Johansson on the roster will expose him to waivers, and I'm sure someone will grab him in a heartbeat.

From the multiple writeups by writers covering the NHL I've seen on what it will take to sign Copp, all have Copp signing for $5.75 million or less, with term 5-6 years. Paying him a little more over 5 years seems reasonable, especially coming home to bring his hometown team back to prominence.

Wahlstron is averaging only 12 minutes a game, that's border 3rd/4th line minutes. The prospect pool is not very good or deep, especially on defense, so they get an NHL ready LD to add to next year's lineup and a high draft pick in a deep draft. The Iles are also close to the cap, and they have to re-sign Barzal next year to a significant raise. Something has to give.

TDL and Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billy12Bob</b></div><div>Grans is a carbon copy of Hronek with the same defensive deficiencies, he'll never be good enough to replace him and you can't have two defenders on the same side with that problem.
You're essentially giving away Bert for Turcotte and a 2nd. Bert is on pace for 80 points this season what are you replacing that with?
You're also giving away both a 4th and Leddy for a player that you'll have to put on waivers at season start. We already have both Juolevi and Oesterle on the roster and there's no way you can run with three "marginals" on LD next year, The defense will be even worse next year if you try it. Take the 2nd for Leddy and pick a good player at the draft instead.
You're paying both a 4th and Viro for a defender that has scored a total of 9 goals in over 200 games and been a minus player on every single team he's played and those team were good too.
So far you're suggesting Detroit should go with Oesterle, Joulevi, Välimäki, Fleury on LD next season. You've also given away 80 points of production. In what way is that an improvement on this year?</div></div>
The LD they are replacing were a dumpster fire on defense. Leddy could only play offense, DeKeyser couldn't do anything, and Staal was what you would expect from an aging veteran playing on the 3rd pair. IMO this is an upgrade to what the Wings put on on LD in the 2021-22 season.
The Wings will not be a contending team for at least 2-4 years, so you have to plan for the core pieces in the roster to be coming into their prime at that time. You also need to have depth in the prospect pool, especially with injuries that happen during the season. There is a lack of Center and RD depth in the prospect pool, which is why I made the trade with the Kings. The Wings have 5 high ceiling LD prospects (Johansson, Sebrango, Edvinsson, Wallinder, and Buium), besides the two being traded away. I expect 2 out of the 5 will be on the roster within the next 2-4 years, and they should replace what is currently defined on the roster.

Detroit declines. You can't expect to send a 4th line cap dump (Martin) and marginal NHL/AHL players in Dal Colle & Salo for Bertuzzi and the 2022 2nd round pick, It would take a package of Walstrom, Raty, and the 2022 1st round pick (top 10 protected).

Most everyone has Yzerman trading Namesnikov, but Vlad was around the Wings when SY was playing with his uncle, Slava Kozlov. Vlad had a home here in the offseason before he was signed as a FA. IMO His great attitude, professionalism, ability to play on any line, and his love for being a Red Wing will keep him here for the foreseeable future.
With that in mind, I expect Erne to be the odd man out, especially since he is the type of player playoff teams desire to add to their lineup and his value probably will never be higher.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Letter_Kenny</b></div><div>I don't want Maata here. Rather trade for Martinez. Or Pettersson if he's available. Try to sign Lindholm.</div></div>
At the moment, I don't expect Martinez to be available, and I'm not sure what the actual cost would be in a trade. There are so many different proposals in CF that have Detroit sending a high 2022 draft pick and a top prospect to Vegas. That is definitely not something Yzerman would do.
I too like Pettersson, but the cost may be too expensive (probably at least a 2022 2nd round pick and a top prospect. Detroit also has multiple very good LD prospects in the pipeline, so Yzerman may stay the course with his plan.
As far as signing Lindholm, I fully expect new GM Verbeek to address his contract extension first thing in his tenure. That led me to signing a stop gap for 3 years while our LD prospects mature and integrate into the roster over that time. Maata should be a decent TDL acquisition for a playoff contender as his contract expires in 3 years.

Vegas is currently $9+ million over the cap, with the salaries of Eichel $10 million and Martinez $5+ million buried in LTIR. Both are scheduled to come off LTIR, so something has to give to in order to activate them both. Even if they shed the Martinez salary, they still have much more salary to get rid of to activate Eichel.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TampaBayLightning22</b></div><div>Yzerman isn't dealing Leddy $2,750,000 for what is basically a 4th round pick if the Caps win the cup. Yzerman will just hold onto him for that offer.</div></div>
There are a lot of LD options at the trade deadline, and the Wings already have Washington's 2022 2nd round. At this point, I don't see the Wings keeping Leddy past the deadline no matter what.

I agree they would rather keep Boeser, but giving him a raise to approximately $7 million or even tendering him this year, putting off his longterm contract to next year will be tough. They have to to resign Bo Horvat at a significant raise (probably close to $7.5 to $8 million) and term next year. They will have no cap space to do both especially over the long term. Horvat is more important to the team long term, and he's at a more important position: center.

Alexandrov, a 35 year old Wing that's not played in the NHL, is worthless to Detroit, so it would basically be Dunn for Bertuzzi. Its a fairly even trade, but trading Bertuzzi is probably Detroit's best chance to land a young Center without breaking the proverbial bank to get one from a team with an abundance of young centers.

I thought about that also, but the Kings are high on centers Quinten Byfield and Akil Thomas. I know Byfield is a no-go on any trade, so it was between Vilardi or Thomas. They really need two wings to fill out their top 6, and this provides a young proven wing to go with their young core of the future.

If you're moving Zadina down to the 3rd line, are you suggesting putting Svech on the 2nd line or someone else? At this time, I don't think Blashill will put Svech that high in the lineup. I also don't want to see Helm, Filpula or LGD put on the 2nd line either.

My thoughts on making this trade. It also provides Yzerman flexibility the trade deadline, as well as having multiple potential assets to trade: Kilorn, Ryan, Helm, Glendening, Gagner, Nemeth, Stahl, Biega, and Bernier. It makes Detroit a more competitive team this year without sacrificing the future. I could even see Yzerman trading Kilorn back to Tampa at the 2021 trade deadline, retaining half of Kilorn's salary for an additional asset.

I didn't listen to that podcast, although I have listened to a couple of them in the past. I have always been a proponent of Defense wins championships. Obviously that starts with who is in goal, but almost all championship teams have had a strong defense, including Detroit during their glory years. IMO Yzerman has seen this during his playing career, and he built a very strong D in Tampa. The more I've read about Samuelson, I really believe he can be part of a key defensive core for many years.

Wings loaded with RD prospects to go along with Hronek: Seider, Lindstrom, Tuomisto, and Berglund. Unfortunately the Wings are weak on the left side with McIsaac and possibly Johansson. Sanderson is mobile for a big kid, skates well, quick and accurate with outlet passes, and willing to play physically when necessary. IMO he plays a complete game, which I believe Yzerman wants in his defenseman.

Avs time is now with the flat cap
Detroit declines. Yzerman is looking to add draft picks or prospects. He won't give up picks for a player that will not be part of the Wings future down the road, although he may trade with someone needing cap relief. That way he gains the aforementioned assets with a vet taking a roster spot for the short term.

They need RD help not LD help Yeah well if Detroit has a chance to get Alexis Lafreniere we take him we need a franchise player and Lafreniere is a franchise player.</div></div>
Although the Ducks would prefer RD help, they really need Dmen overall. Cholowski has shown the offensive acumen for being a future powerplay QB. He's still working on the defensive side, and has shown progress. By making the trade, the Ducks get a promising former 1st round pick for moving down from the last pick in the 1st round to the mid 2nd.
As far as Lafreniere, he is a legit elite wing. By moving down one spot, the Wings get a potentially elite center in Byfield that is almost a year younger than Lafreniere, and he is showing the same potential that Lafreniere was at this time in his career development. In addition to that, the Wings get mid-second round pick for Ottawa to get the NHL ready elite French Canadian face of the franchise they covet.

Because they can't sign anyone and they would only get future pics. Who knows what those picks will be, especially since they can be lowball offers. They get two former 1st round picks that have played in the NHL at rock bottom salaries, two high-end prospects rated as 1st rounders in their draft year that will probably be in the NHL in two years and two 2nd round picks that are possibly high in the 2nd round. Mastrosimone is rated as a top 6 forward and McIsaac has potential as a top pair defenseman. IMO not a bad return given the circumstances.

I wouldn't be so sure that TB can get much more.. They're way over the cap, and offer sheets may not return that much.
With the current situation out there, many teams are not going to be in any position to sign any of their own or free agents. Since TB can't sign anyone at the moment, GMs can lowball the offers for TB's RFAs and not necessarily worry about TB matching. TB would only get future picks, and they are still in win now mode.
