Not a bad idea. Marleau isn't doing a ton on that top line though, and he has proven chemistry with Kadri.. Kappy/Matthews/Ny would be insane.
Super fun to have this many assets to play around with though :)

Marleau - Matthews - Ennis..........( Ennis as rental in 1st line till Nylander signs, still claiming Ennis should be pushed so he could be trade asset at TDL)
xxxxxxx- Tavares - Marner...........( Leivo till Ennis moved into that line )
Hyman - Kadri - Brown...................( all signed, let them get as much points as they can )
Johnsson - Lindholm - Kapanen.....( all three needs to be signed at end of season so limit them, you can squeeze best out of them after signing 2-3y low money contracts )
Leivo / Gauthier in pressbox ( tho im still highly doubtfull about Gauthier )</div></div>
You are worrying way too much about asset management and managing the contracts. Sure, you have to do this to an extent, but in the end Babcock wants to win and will put the team in the best position to do so. He doesn't care about their contracts. This team can win now. So do it.

I agree.. I actually like Leivo I just think Ennis has outplayed him to earn a spot on this team. I could actually see us starting the year with Johnsson in the press box and Leivo in since I haven't been too impressed with Johnsson so far, but Leivo does always get the short end of the stick it seems. A trade would be great for him. We'd get very little in return but I do want to see him succeed somewhere.

Crazy idea..
It's an interesting idea, but yeah probably crazy.
I MAY be open to it if we didn't have two high end offensive defensemen. If we were loading up with our best five players on the PP regardless of position, Rielly or Gardiner probably make that 5 anyway. Having a defenseman on there doesn't hinder the Leafs in any way.

This is commonly forgotten. Could the Leafs use an upgrade on defense if it came along? Absolutely. Do we HAVE to get a defenseman like everyone says? Nope. Not at all. There are pieces there, and my point in this thread was more to point out we could potentially use our pieces more effectively. I think that got lost in the (likely poor) wording of the title.

Well nothing is a certainty, but I already think your projected contracts are close to what they will come in at (Marner a little higher). So a ~4 mill cap increase and if needed trading Brown would open up over 5 million in space.

Defensive Tweaks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>clark</b></div><div>the question for the Leaf is whether Kronwall or Gardiner is a better player in 2018/19. </div></div>
Really this is all it comes down to.
Kronwall and Brodziak
or
Gardiner and Lindholm
And really this isn't remotely close. Gardiner is far superior to a worn down Kronwall. You can hate his style, his defensive ability, but matter of the fact is he is an elite skater and puck mover that will get 50+ points. As for the 4C spot, they should only play ~6 minutes a game realistically if we're doing this right. So whatever upgrade Brodziak is, is not close to worth a severe downgrade in Gardiner to Kronwall. Overall just not that well thought out from the OP.

Ennis would have to REALLY impress for this to be an option. Johnsson would likely get the opportunity on Matthews' wing first.

Defensive Combos (Question to Leafs Fans)
I wouldn't be against it. Try it out for a couple weeks and see what happens. First pairing is solid. Third pairing is solid. Only question mark is the Hainsey/Zaitsev pairing and I'm a believer in Zaitsev. I think playing him with Hainsey could open up his offensive game (like Rielly) and make him more than worth his paycheck.

Gudas . 70GP, 2G, 14A, 0+/- 83PIMS 0.23PPG 3,350,000 MILLION
WOW.</div></div>
You aren't paying either of those guys to get points though. The issue with Polak is that he cannot move the puck and exit the zone. Can Gudas do that? Can he then be a physical presence and eat up minutes? Can he then penalty kill? I'm not going to pretend I watch Philly often, but my understanding is yes he can do all of the above effectively enough to be a #4D on this team.
That's my thought process anyway.

I'm sure you're not the only one. For me personally it isn't a deal breaker, but just a negative for the player. I imagine others thimk differently.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>Philly takes a 2nd rounder for Gudas in a second.
Hes not nearly effective anymore now hes a repeat, repeat offender so hes hesitant to do what made him good: play physical, hit and a nasty streak.
While Philly only has Myers and Folin who are RH (they did just draft 2 good right handed dmen), theres a massive shortage across the league and GUdas at his salaey and current effectiveness int really worth a second. But if thats the offer, Philly has provorov, gostisbehere, hagg, sanheim, andy macdonald, folin, myers and tons of cap space and theyd take that second in a second.</div></div>
I was quite aware of the dropoff in play for Gudas over this past year, but the deal would be gambling on him returning to 16/17 form. But if what you stated in the first sentence is true and he may never regain that form due to the numerous suspensions that would likely be a major roadblock.

I think the idea for Flyers fans would be to run something like this:
Prov-Ghost
Sanheim-AMac
Hagg-Myers
I know a decent number of them do have interest in moving Gudas. Partly because of a very poor season last year. If a Flyers fan could give us some insight that would be greatly appreciated though.

Leafs Cheap RHD Trade (PHI)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jamiepo</b></div><div>Do you not think it would be more wise to see how Ozhiganov pans out first before filling that role?</div></div>
It's a good point because actually I'm a pretty big Carrick fan too and believe he would succeed in a bottom pairing role. What it comes down to for me is that Gudas brings a whole different element to our blueline that I don't believe Carrick or Oz possess. And while they COULD theoretically fill that role we're a contending team that at some point needs some stability back there and to not rely on an overseas signing or a bottom pairing D to take the next step.
But if we go into the season as we are at this point in time, see what Carrick/Oz have in camp, and a deal like this is still available mid-season? I think that's totally a viable option as well.

No deal from Toronto. Dermott is a top4 defenseman in his own right, so we aren't fixing much back there, and for that small upgrade we give up a 30 goal scoring matchup center on a steal of a deal. Just doesn't make sense.

By the time you have to sign Spurgeon, Marleau is off the books and the cap has likely rised a fair bit. I don't see that as much of an issue honestly.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>That price is ridiculous for Spurgeon. Zaitsev is a top 4 RHD and if he's healthy this year will be much better than last year. Throwing in Brown as well as a first is just insane cost for a player that is a marginal upgrade over Zaitsev. The only benefit is the net saving in cap space which is under a million so its not even worth it from that perspective. All in all, this trade weakens Toronto without creating space.</div></div>
I was expecting this response, and believe me I do like Zaitsev and would much rather deal Gardiner, but I don't see another way that we get a legitimate 2D (which is what Spurgeon is) without moving more valuable pieces. Yes I agree this may be an overpay, but all the pieces moved are secondary pieces and not Nylander. The Wild won't accept "market value" for Spurgeon, and why should they?

What would Spurgeon cost?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arousedcat</b></div><div>Maybe, I'm not very sure though. To understand our problems with defense you should know that Suter had a <em>very</em> rare injury at the end of the season. He broke his Talus (a small bone connecting the foot to the leg) which really only is seen in car accidents. He was told if he were a soccer or basketball player, he would likely never play again. So the problem with moving Brodin (who is the only guy that could play anywhere close to the amount Suter plays) is that we'd HAVE to know his replacement can play huge minutes.
Here's an article on Suter's injury right when it happened, if you're interested. The article says he broke his fibula, but it was later revealed that it actually was his talus.
<a href="https://www.nhl.com/wild/news/suter-injury-040418/c-297660636" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.nhl.com/wild/news/suter-injury-040418/c-297660636</a></div></div>
That's a tough one.. Does that put his health in question long term? Gardiner led the Leafs in minutes these past 2 years, yet still played less than Spurgeon (Babcock effect) so I don't know if that necessarily solves your minutes issue if Suter is out. Though I'm sure Brodin could play 24+, Dumba 24+, and Gardiner 22+ pretty easily. I don't think Brodin/Gardiner could play the right side if Suter is healthy though.
