I'd be seriously surprised that any team offers $9M to a goalie in the next 2-3 years, the demand just isn't there, teams are getting by with cheaper and cheaper goaltending.

Nobody will pay that, market for goalies is down, and recent contracts have shown that dumping big money into goalies doesn't really work out.

Can't see Winnipeg trading for Miller... with Hellebyuck saying he doesn't want to go rebuild, and him, along with Wheeler, Dubois and Scheifele being UFA's in the summer of 2024, I see this team being bled of their talent and likely having to go full rebuild.

The cost of Dubois
Trading anything for Dubois is ridiculous.
This team is still not a playoff contender in the east for 2023-24.
So giving up assets to have Dubois now, AND burn a year off his contract with another lackluster season, doesn't make much sense.
Drouin is awful and Hughes should be fired if he considers re-signing him AND playing him at C, Dvorak is a better keep at 3C.
Moving that Florida pick would be a bad idea, especially with Sandin-pellikka or Wood projected around there, keep the pick, stock the system, sign Dubois in FA, then figure out the goaltending situation.

Hughes plan Dubois like Fiala trade
I think the Fiala trade was more driven from the fact of Minny not being able to afford him with the impending cap hits of the buyouts coming.
So, to remain competitive, they had to let him go, and I think that was the best offer available.
I think Dubois commands slightly more, but not much, simply because Winnipeg is an armpit, and they need him for any runs they can get, and would likely be worse without him.
I still don't think sending prospects when they can potentially get him for free in 15 months makes much sense.
Better to be patient, and stock pieces.

Askarov
Not worth giving up a pick that could be a key piece moving forward.
Looking at the NHL now, elite goalies are not that common, and in the east, 4 of the current 8 playoff teams don't have an elite tender (Carolina, Jersey, Toronto and Pittsburgh) and 6 of the 8 in the west don't either, (exceptions being Oettinger and Hellebuyck)
Unfortunately, a goalie is important in the NHL, but you can win without a legit top-10 goalie if you got the right pieces in place elsewhere.

Revisiting the Dach trade
Every team got what they needed.
Isles got depth defense that could move up.
Chicago got good prospects in a rebuild
Montreal got a young NHL ready center with upside.
This is the type of trade which we won't know who "won" until a decade from now.

A lot of whiny people on the internet yelling Anderson has negative value.... simply not true, as time goes on, if he still scores 20-25 goals, and clearly remains healthy, the contract becomes more and more manageable until it's actually a good contract for a top-6 forward.
Anderson with Drai or McD has more value than Campbell in Montreal.... throwing a late 1st to take on Campbell's contract, while taking a lone bright spot in Monty from a team with no goaltending depth is a tough ask.
I don't think it takes much more, Anderson with retention for Campbell and the 1st, Monty would likely get a 2nd or another projected bottom 6 prospect.

First off, Neither of your examples would be acquired with 5 years of contract to acclimate to a team.
Secondly, Ottawa is in shambles, Debrincat never wanted to be there and will likely be gone this summer.
Thirdly, of the trades with term left, Ekholm, Vrana and Granlund, 2 of the 3 are outperforming their pre-trade production.
Trades with term are hockey trades, trades without term have the potential to be rentals.
Jersey made a push, but they're disrupting the chemistry that made them on the more exciting teams to watch. Ottawa, i've already eluded to (and even Chychrun is under-performing).
Keller deserves the respect, regardless of your willingness to underpay.

I think the fact that he's a PPG player on an utterly terrible team does glorify him that will likely be in the bottom 5 in scoring this season, and on a fixed contract that will age well as the cap balloons the next 2-4 years.
Putting him with Ovechkin-Backstrom-Strome-Kuzy would likely get more out of him than playing with Schmatlz or Crowse.
That contract has the possibility of being one of the better contracts in 2-3 years from now if the cap hits 90-ish+ million.

They tried that, with Monahan this year, and they got a 1st, doubt a 3rd would be of interest.
And as others have eluded too, too many wingers in the Habs under contract that need to be moved in order to let the younger talent rise, Anderson, Gallagher, Armia, Hoffman, Hoffman is the most likely to be moved without having to take anything back in return.

Never said keeping hoffman is good, but trading him for an injury prone winger makes absolutely zero sense.
Hoffman will ride out his last year, and be a TDL dump for a 4th with retention.

Mantha - Miller - Garland

That's the thing, if he had no suitors, I would agree, discount for term with St-louis or Toronto.
I just get the impression that teams like Detroit, Montreal, Columbus, Philly and Vancouver could use him to work with the young guys, and give him 2nd line minutes.
Though I would personally like to see him go back to Colorado on a $5M contract, that would be interesting in the west.

Quebec would be a terrible spot, unbalances the West again, necessitating a move of some eastern team, which causes travel issues again.
Quebec wasn't a viable expansion because there is no increase in market, it's just dilution of an existing market, much like Hamilton, you're poaching from a current fan base to support a new team.
Kansas City, Houston, Milwaukee/Green bay or Salt Lake City would be better options to continue the league growth in viewership and revenues.

Its among Debrincats career lows in contrast .
That said i'd much rather add no forwards at all and find a way to upgrade Matheson or Savard into Erik Karlsson without losing our shirts.
E.Karlsson could help take Ghule to another level and be here just long enough to help Hutson jump to the NHL full time
His cap hits high but what he'd do to change this system would be huge by comparison to a Matheson or Savard's contributions</div></div>
C vs. Wing, C is a short term need depending on whether Dach or Beck can handle a workload, and obviously depending on who they get in the draft.
I don't think EK65 is on the right end of the career to take that chance given his contract, unless SJ or some intermediary eats $4-ish mil.
I think they need institutional depth, PLD would be a possibility in 2024-2024 only, so, get someone in the system and see how the FA market looks.... I'd risk a mid-level contract on a Dumba or something.
