Pens deadline sell off AND offseason
I actually think this is extremely similar to what will happen in terms of the approach. It sounds to me like we are going to be pretty all in with selling at this deadline, try and get maybe 2-3 players like Borque if we can, and then fully rebuild in like 2 years. I don't think we will be a contender next year though. I think it is more like the first stages of a rebuild and maybe hope something clicks and we go on a run, but not expecting that. It sounds to me though like the beginning stages of a rebuild, but we are taking it slower just in case something happens showing we can still contend.
Also I will add that these contracts are pretty reasonable. I think there's 0 chance a big name FA would sign a long term deal here and I don't think it would be smart for us either. Someone like Bertuzzi though for like 2 years makes sense.

SHOTGUN REBUILD

I agree, it would for sure speed it up. But at minimum it will take 4-5 years to rebuild properly. I think we need 3-4 years of having top 5 draft picks and then 1-2 more to see how it works out before we are thinking of contending again.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>edeangel84</b></div><div>I also like that Vegas deal. The Florida teams don’t have a first to offer for two years and I think that’ll take them out. Vancouver adding Lindholm most likely takes them out and Winnipeg probably could t extend Jake, so I think that’s a lot for a rental. Vegas could be our best bet or Dallas if Marchment came back.</div></div>
Yeah Dallas definitely would have a better chance to re-sign him. It makes a lot of sense. Them having him and Robertson would take them to the next level. I think the best plan is to trade Jake + anyone we can at this deadline and then enter the rebuild. I don't see us contending next year or big name free agents wanting to sign with us given the spot were in

I just don't see any big names signing here in the summer. They all know our days of contending are likely done and it dosen't make this a desirable landing spot. I think we need to really take our time with the rebuild to do it properly.

Dallas, Vancouver, and Winnipeg deals are best for us here. I'd be interested in taking a contract back too to maximize value with the hope Jake will re-sign with that team

Agreed, I think with Johansen for Guentzel and retention it would take two 1sts and a decent prospect

I think it takes more for Guentzel. The 1st will end up being really late and Johansen will be extra cap for us. I think add another 1st and we'd consider.

I think this is similar to what it will take, even if it doesn't make sense for Rangers. 1st + A-/B+ prospect minimum imo. Perrault is an A and 1st plus Perrault is a little one sided in our favor but add in Goodrow and I think it evens out.

That Guentzel trade is perfect tbh. I think that's exactly the return we'd be looking for whether it's the Canucks or another team. I don't know if they'll want to give up Lekkerimaki, but that's what it would take I think

I am a big fan of Reinharts game and he definitely brings something to the table we are missing, but I don't see why he would want to sign long term in Pittsburgh and not Florida. Their window is open and will be open for longer, while ours is rapidly closing.

Trading Jake and retooling in the offseason
I like the Jake trade here a lot, but the way I see it this is our last chance to go all in. I don't think we have a great chance this season, but I would understand if they want to give Crosby one last opportunity the way he is playing. I think it will largely depend on how we do at this deadline. But if we trade Jake it's pretty much over. It will be much tougher to win next year than this year with how old the roster is. And free agents won't want to sign here for long term, given how close we are to a rebuild, which would make it almost impossible to replace Jake. It will only get tougher to win next year. I think we either go all in now then begin the rebuild in the offseason or we just sell now and start the rebuild.

He'll get a massive return I think. I would try and trade him for some A level prospects. Lekkerimaki, Kasper, Lambert, or someone on that level. I would rather than then a late 1st honestly.

There's some good ideas here. Bertuzzi is exactly what we've needed for years. Megna would be worth it to try and get the most out of Karlsson. Also, I think we're at the point where we have to trade Guentzel. Apparently Dubas offered him 8.5 x 6 and he declined. That's the absolute most term and aav I'd go given this teams situation.

Yzerman will likely give him another year in GR.

Edvinsson should be ready next season.
Wallinder looks promising.
Kasper and Danielson are untouchable.
Not sure about Johansson?
Detroit has 2 very good goalie prospects in Cossa and Augustine.
Lombardi intrigues me.</div></div>
Gotcha. Just am thinking if there's any other prospects around the league who could be a good fit in a Guentzel trade. Think our best best would be to get a good prospect instead of a late 1st.

Jake to Nashville
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JSEB93</b></div><div>Well that's definitely a fair question haha - the odds of them missing the playoffs are a lot higher than their chances of winning the Cup that's for sure. Which to me is close to zero. But if you have a decent chance to make the playoffs, which right now I think they do, then I think you have to take it. My opinion is also heavily based on where they are in the standings. If they **** the bed before the TDL and are like 12+ points out of the playoff race come deadline time, I have no issue trading Guentzel. I get what you're saying about the rebuild - why go for it with a very slim chance of winning. Try to lessen the rebuild. I guess that's just where we differ, I see a brutal rebuild no matter what, and would take another playoff berth or two over ending it now and hopefully hitting on your picks to quicken the future rebuild, which isn't guaranteed. It might not be the right business decision, maybe it's just what I want as a fan haha.
Those would be great assets to get - and can be a great start to a rebuild assuming you hit on the picks. Honestly you might get something decent for Ned too with the way he's played. My main here issue though is the middle ground thing. If they blow it up and get a bunch of good assets, sure I'll be sad, but it's still a respectable and logical move that I can understand. I can't hate it. What can't happen, and what will piss me off, is some half assed "soft rebuild" that leaves us in limbo.</div></div>
I'd be shocked if they do a soft rebuild. They know better than that. I think they're just trying to ease into it and don't want to just drop the rebuild word so abruptly haha. I think ultimately Dubas was brought in to built the future. It might be a little earlier than they thought he would, but for me I always kind of interpreted his plan to be give it one more year and see what happens.

Jake to Nashville
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JSEB93</b></div><div>It could mean that. Personally given the play and the standings I'd still like them to go for it this year - but again if they do blow it up, I'd at least respect it. And yeah - the chances of trading the core and NMC guys immediately is incredibly slim - but if that is the route they choose then Guentzel, Pettersson, and both goalies should be gone this season at a minimum I think.</div></div>
I see what your saying and can see why going for it is a good option. For me though I think the question is whether we will even make the playoffs and not whether we will win the cup. And when the goal becomes only playoffs and it's the second year in a row I think that's when it's time. I think if we start the rebuild right now we could potentially make it a lot quicker. If we extend Guentzel though and keep trying to contend for 2-3 years it will be a brutal rebuild. And for me it's not worth it when the chances of winning the cup are almost 0. As far as returns go I think:
Guetnzel: We should try and get two A level prospects.
Pettersson: A 1st and maybe a B prospect
Jarry: If we trade him for Campbell on the Oilers we'd probably get two 1sts back.
2-3 good prospects and three 1sts in this case would be a good start to the rebuild. Then next year we would most likely have a chance at the draft lottery. I'm a big believer in not rushing through the rebuild and really taking our time to make sure we build up a good team. Ideally we take it slow and have 4-5 years of top 3-5 picks and then can have a new era of contending.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JSEB93</b></div><div>Exactly - I'm with you on that part. Aiming for the middle is the worst possible scenario imo. If they decide the Crosby eras chances are over and want to rebuild, so be it, but then they have to blow it up. Personally I don't think that'll happen - but it's at least a respectable and logical move.</div></div>
Yeah I think they should blow it up completely. I think based on Eliott Friedmans report that will probably happen. Them saying "soft rebuild" and 2-3 years of replenishing the prospect pool sounds a lot like an actual rebuild. It will take longer than 2-3 years but to me that sounds like they're easing into it. Because I think regardless of what course we take it will not be all our stars getting traded in one offseason. Jake will likely be the first domino and then we'll see what happens.

Soft rebuild per EF
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gpmack95</b></div><div>I can't see Malkin making a big deal to stay (with his social media posts and everything that happened) to be traded. Crosby went to bat for him and it would be a bad look. They earned their right to ride it out all together. Same with Letang, he took less and those three legit would die for one another. Again, Karlsson with retention could spark a pretty good rebuild.</div></div>
I could definitely see Karlsson being moved and it wouldn't shock me if it's the deadline or offseason. With the core I think it'll come down to what they want to do. I think they've earned the right to compete elsewhere if they want and they definitely have earned the right to retire as penguins.
