Completely agree, and the fact that Sharks fans magically think that they can trade Karlsson who makes more then $10m to a contender (of which all are to the cap or close to it) and not expect to take on any cap in return, but instead get the entire farm of prospects, 6 first and second round picks and then some. It’s just not gonna happen. When the trade rolls in, they’ll learn it the hard way though.

Then you take on the full cap hit, pay a 4th or 5th to do so, take out the Stars trade and sign a veteran to scratch for $800k and have Ruhwedel play on the third pair in replacement of Hakanpää
Though I disagree, I think for this kinda value CBJ bites the bullet and takes the deal. Not many other teams are going to give up that 3rd for Roslovic.

Throwing at a wall
This is one of the better ones I’ve seen though if you trade Rutta that opens up a world of more possibilities to solidify the D. I’d also take out the Caleb Jones signing and have Smith on the third pair and then a veteran guy to pair with him. Figure with Rutta’s cap hit gone, you’re looking at around $3m to spend at the deadline or to improve the team via trade now since the UFA market has dried up for the most part.
Also that bottom 6 looks considerably weak to my liking, I don’t think that really moves the needle that much at all in terms of depth scoring and more goals, etc. The things we are desperate for.

Accelerating the process
If we are moving Granlund, Petry, and the 1st it’s because we are certain we are getting back a player with talents that are going to PUSH us OVER the edge. Not a knock on either of them but Henrique and Silfverberg don’t do that. Karlsson does. That’s why you see those trade proposals happening.

Not necessarily, they move Faksa likely either way and that then makes this deal possible but I don’t think it would look like what this guy had. Prob would be Marchment for Petry and we add a third or smth

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pensfan21</b></div><div>I like it. Roslovic is a good option for 3C. Good to get more youth in the lineup. The only thing is I personally am not super confident Nylander would hold up in the top 6. But I would be very happy with this lineup to start the season. It's definitely a playoff team. My thoughts are just focus on making it a sure playoff team now then at the deadline make the changes to make it a contender. A top 6 or third line wing upgrade is for sure something we can do at deadline. Overall though I really like this team. Fingers crossed for a Karlsson trade today</div></div>
Hopeful as ever that the deal gets done for him, and I think in response to your comment on Nylander, I think his upside is top 6 or middle 6 winger simply because of what he is capable of doing on the offensive side of the puck. Though the defense is lackluster so putting him on a line with Malkin may not be the smartest move. But if you want to keep Malkin producing for an extra year or 2 then he should do that with more then enough offensive fire power around him and guys that he can trust that will get back for him.
Also I’ve been thinking of the deadline lately and one thing that concerns me that it seems no one has brought up is, how the HELL are we going to be able to make a significant move at the deadline when we are going into the season with no money to spare. Sure you can bank in LTIR and guys being injured but if we are rolling and we are in say 2nd and 3rd in the Metro and have a healthy team going for us, then I can’t see how we are going to be able to add any more cap space on to the roster? And it’s not like we are going to have an extra $1m or a number we can work with. We are literally going to be TO THE CAP HIT. That’s just my concerns for the tdl atm

A above average backup goalie on a cheap contract, a top 4 veteran defenseman for their rebuild going the other way in Petry, a serviceable bottom 4dman in Rutta, a young defenseman with upside and potential to still be had.
All are quality pieces and assets that fit San Jose’s agenda. None of those players are “cap dumps” per say *IN THIS TRADE* and when you’re trading for a guy making north of $10m there just has to be enough cap going back the other way one way or another. Petry probably has more value in this trade then some if not most speculate.

Karlsson trade looks good to me, think it might end up being very similar to that.
Not a huge fan of Olofsson, ideally we can get a 3C with that money, but he would certainly be an upgrade over what we have right now in bottom 6.
This is just pure speculation, but from Carter's pov if he's not in the lineup the first half of the season, it's possible he would want to waive at deadline and go to a team in the playoff hunt at half retained maybe. Unfortunately he will probably get a roster spot just because it seems like Sully is intent on keeping him in lineup</div></div>
Fair on the 3C point, was thinking Roslovic would cost about the same price and probably serve a more valuable role on the team.
Yea man Carter is holding us back from so much potential with that extra $3m to spare. Guess we will just have to wait and see what happens but I do think there has to be some sort of plan in place to at least try to do something with that $3m or build around it if he’s on the roster.

Columbus definitely accepts, and I don't see why not for Chicago or Toronto (Jarnkrok has a 10-team NT list, but I doubt Pittsburgh is on it).
It's hard to get a read on the Karlsson market, but I'm not sure there's enough to entice the Sharks to take that. Smith and the 1st are quality futures, but not so high quality that another team couldn't beat that bid.</div></div>
Well it may be there only option and I’m sure we could spice up the deal to their liking, I get the sense Carolina is out of it or at least less interested and as for Seattle, Karlsson just doesn’t fit their timeline at all. That leaves us as the last option and we take advantage of that with our leverage. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised when he’s dealt because it’s not gonna be near what people think it will be whether people want to hear it that way or not. We have seen it time and time again in situations like this.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JuanDamienNebraska</b></div><div>Even though that would definitely be one of the best Top 4s in the league, man would that bottom pair worry me. I’d much rather keep POJ, especially if Friedman is our 6th.
If we can get Karlsson at 7 million that’d be beautiful. My gripe, besides wanting to keep POJ over Smith, would be the Olofsson move. I think that if we’re keeping Granlund then we should invest in a defensive forward rather than a, though young, a one dimensional offensive guy. In this model wouldn’t mind putting Rust back at 2nd RW and using that third from the Olofsson trade to get Tanev for the third.
I’m still in favor of moving Granlund. Not only due to his play style and cap hit, but also because I believe that Nylander can produce for very cheap if given a legitimate opportunity. The fourth line wouldn’t allow him to come into his own and his offensive game to flourish how I believe it can.
We shall see. Let’s just all be glad that Hextall is gone and acquiring Karlsson is even a possibility thanks to Dubas lol.</div></div>
Yea I get that, bottom pair is pretty lackluster but I had to make due with what the options were in this much of a cap crunch.
Ehh but then that doesn’t really do much to the bottom 6. The whole topic of discussion right now seems to be that our bottom 6 doesn’t look finished and doesn’t fill enough holes to where we can afford sacrificing more money without more scoring. We need a defined finisher to top off the forward group. A middle 6 one at that. I see Olofsson fitting that category. Sure he isn’t Patrice Bergeron on the defensive side of the puck (miles away from it actually) but he is an instant pp2 option and can be slotted in the top 6 or bottom 6 and fluctuate wingers around there. That instantly adds much needed depth, more goals, more production, more offensive fire power to the team which has been the problem for 2+ seasons now. Depth. Scoring. With the additions of Eller, Acciari, Nieto, those are all key components in the bottom 6 that can contribute to the defensive side of the puck (Granlund too when he can actually find his game this year) and then there’s that lasting hole of depth scoring which Olofsson fills very nicely.
And on top of that, not very often are there young 27 year old proven goal scoring forwards on the market on expiring deals, available for chump change. I’d be all over that if I was Dubas. That again circles back to his whole plan of low risk-high reward type of off-season. This is literally that exact move. I compare this a lot to the Reilly Smith deal with Vegas, though there are differences in the objective of that trade then there is to this one.
And you are very right, I personally think Nylander can quietly post a 40-50 point season this year on Malkin’s wing and be a sneaky good forward in the metro. But again, had to make do of the scenario in this case. Though in this lineup, you could slot Eller down for the ultimate 4th line of Nieto-Eller-Acciari and then have your third line being Rust-Granlund-Olofsson and you put Nylander up on Malkin’s line.
Absolutely, it feels so refreshing to finally see moves being made and the right ones at that. It’s gonna be fun to see where Dubas goes with this but he is far from done. That’s the best part.

Well from a GM standpoint, you tell Carter he has no role in the starting lineup anymore and that he is either going to be made available for trade (which no one wants) and even then, Carter most likely isn’t waiving to 90% of the candidates that even would consider trading for him.
So, it’s either healthy scratch and he sits in the booth all season and still goes through a full NHL season or he can be smart and retire and get paid his NHL contract sitting on his couch at home. It’s a mutual win win for both sides. It’s slim to happen but man would that be nice.

Though he is a bad fit for the Pens in terms of play style and cap hit, the man had 41 points last year and 64 points the year prior.
With that being said, I do think we have no choice but to move him out, especially if Karlsson is coming in. However, people have gotten delusional on this website in regard to what they expect us to give to move him. I’ve even had a Hawks fan try to claim to me that it will cost us two 2nds and Ty Smith to move Granlund LMAO. Completely ridiculous.</div></div>
Nah yea from the minute I saw the trade roll in that night I immediately thought it was the wrong move. Granlund just doesn’t really play Penguins hockey and I never really understood that move, I think it was a desperate one and a panic mode move.
As for the cost to move him, I can’t see it being more than a second rounder especially being that next year is his expiring year. No WAY Dubas pays 2 seconds. And to be honest even if we do acquire EK I don’t think that necessarily means Granlund is on his way out. We’ll see.
