can't teams only retain on two or three players concurrently (Or maybe that is just in the NHL video games)? Doesn't make any sense to retain on Laughton for Philidelphia if that is the case. Also makes zero sense for the Leafs to give up a 1st for a paltry retention.</div></div>

Not sure how TOR signs Meier without later losing Nylander. Maybe pray to the salary cap gods (Bettman)</div></div>
Depends on the asks, but they can certainly get through next season with Meier at $9Mx8. Nylander might price himself out but that is also why adding Meier is so important. He would reduce the reliance on Nylander and allow Toronto to at least consider a trade during the contract year.

Id stick Laughton in the middle of Barbashev and Jarnkrok but yeah, decent line. I don't think you need the retention on either one, particularly Laughton.
Personally, I like Laughton but that 1st round pick is likely headed to San Jose, that trade likely won't cut it. He is the bell of the ball, and for once I think the Leafs should actually pay the price, but yeah, you won't have that 1st lying around still nor would it be worth it to spend on Laughton.

Sharks. They won't retain that much and frankly Edmonton doesn't need them to. Move Puljujarvi already, plug in a cheap option, and there is your space. Paying Karlsson 8-9M a season for the duration of the contract is a fair price. Obviously lower the better for the Oilers but it won't be more than 25% retention.

Knies was a 2nd round pick. He is getting a lot of hype but that has happened before and players don't pan out. From what I have seen of him play, I don't get the hype. I think Robertson is the better player for the next few years but Knies is likely a lock to be at the very least, a serviceable NHLer, and at best a solid top 6 option.</div></div>

Meier or bust
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DefenseFirst</b></div><div>As a bruins fan, i would be so happy if toronto did this. It’s really easy to just say, “re-sign everyone!” But in practice, you can’t just wave a magic wand and get more cap space. So as is, $18M in cap space next season. Expect the cap to go up $1M, so call it $19M. Meier comes in somewhere around $10M. Let’s be optimistic, call it $9. Bunting is probably $6Mish? What’s the very low end for samsonov? $3M?
4th liners are cheap, but they’re not free…and no - the D isn’t fine. Even worse without Holl who apparently you’re losing. Let’s say through some miracle the leafs pull it off.
Holl is not good. Easily replaced. He may play ok most of the time but when he makes mistakes they are brutal and lead to goals. Bunting at $6M? Hahaha, no, he may be putting up points but he is better suited to a 2nd or ideally 3rd line role. If he wants anything north of $4M, I'd let him walk without even a moment's thought. Samsonov is worth keeping but goalies are voodoo, I'm sure there will be some options out there if he wants more than a $3-3.5M deal.
Bye bye matthews! Let’s say somehow they pull off that miracle? See ya later Marner.
It just doesn’t work. THe leafs can’t add a big piece long term.</div></div>

Muzzin returns for playo
Both Sandin and Minten? I think you keep Sandin since he is supremely better than Holl. Holl cannot be a top 4 guy in the playoffs. Also, $2M retained for 2 additional years on McCabe is highly unlikely. Chicago has to keep their retention options open (you can only retain a certain number of contracts I believe) for Kane and Teows because they will have to retain if they trade those guys. And they might resign next season only to be traded and retained again so Chicago won't be retaining on anyone other than those two.

I surprisingly don't hate the first trade. I'v been thinking that despite Sandin being potentially fantastic he is just a bit redundant since Rielly was signed long term. Chychrun is a larger better version of him (at least for the duration of his current contract).

If Bunting gets more he does NOT get term. My thinking is that he wants to play here, he will get paid well and get to play with incredible players for the rest of his career. He is not a star in his own right but is a good complimentary piece. Can't overpay those guys in a hard cap system. Fact is Toronto doesn't need him and if they pay him more it doesn't actually help them.
Also, I'd actually be in favour of NOT signing him and just slot in Jarncrok until Knies is ready.

and how happy are Leafs fans with Rielly... Sandin is a lesser Rielly.
This leaves the Leafs with 3 different left D styles and 3 different right D styles. Instead of having Rielly and 'lesser' Rielly on the left side. Sandin is great but already is showing the strongarm tactics of holding out for money. Leafs won't be able to afford him on the next deal anyway. Montour helps them now.

I don't think NSH is interested in retaining on Ekholm. That said I don't know what kind of quality those prospects you attached to the deal are so who knows.
What I really wanted to say was that IF EDM is going to empty the cupboards this year it makes sense to get some quality D with term. It has been their weak spot for the entirety of the McDavid led team.

Ah, quite irrelevant though. A QO is minor, short term leverage for a player. For a player of Meier's caliber and productivity it is not an issue.

And Kubalik is not even close to Hagel in terms of value. He's 4 years older, more expensive and is a pending UFA in a year compared to Hagel being a pending RFA in 2 years. Kubalik i also a significantly worse player defensively and was doing the significant bulk of his scoring at 5v5 while Kubalik is basically a power play specialist getting massively tilted offensive zone starts.
They are not remotely comparable</div></div>
Please, I did not say they were the same player. I think I even said that they are quite different, but... Detroit can and will ask a similar price for him considering his production and CAP hit with term. I'm not sure why you are arguing about him, seems like a moot point.

You think the Lightening overpaid? Hagel is extremely valuable considering 1.5M for this year and next. Also has 28 points in 35 games this season. They did not overpay. The trade value was spot on. Kubalik is a similar situation, more of a scorer, little higher AAV and one less year. I'd say that Detroit would be looking for a similar trade to the Hagel deal, no? Which is why I said I think it'd be too much to give up considering what I think the Leafs are looking for.
