Offer Sheet Heiskanen
I think the main reason offer sheets don't work, or haven't worked so far, is that GM's are too timid to do them and/or don't really want to do them.
Over the next 3 seasons with what's projected to be a flat cap, if there's a cap strapped team with a good player that's eligible, why not offer 4/$6.5M per? It's a 1st and a 3rd in compensation. For Heiskenan, he'd get to hit FA at age 25 or 26 (I didn't look up his B-day) when the cap should be higher. Good for him. If he signs the offer sheet and the Stars match, they'll still have less cap space to make other moves.
Tampa Bay would have to scramble to stay cap compliant to match a 4/$5M per deal on Sergachev. Sure, they'll match if he signs, but there'd be a few dominos to fall for them after that.

Trying to get younger and acquire picks
Draft picks and getting younger doesn't always automatically translate into competing in a few years, although overall Bowman/Kelly have been good at drafting players. It's a good thought though to see what trying to get picks/youngers while keeping Toews/Kane/Keith/Seabs would look like. Problem is of course it looks like one should bet the under on wins and over on goals allowed, hah.
Maybe Alzner gets better with a change of scenery? I don't know. Otherwise I don't see how this team is better, especially since the goaltending isn't as good as last year's team when they started out with Lehner/Crawford in tandem. I think the sum of the trades is a step back, and for a team like the Blackhawks with Bowman at least being on the hot seat (or should be if not), I don't think they're in a spot to take even a minor step back.

oh, no, you missed my point. Murphy has more value than Dermott (and a better player), Saad is a better player than Hyman, so your trade proposal for Debrincat wasn't an apt comparison imo.

Seabrook for Kuemper
I think the Blackhawks need to just healthy scratch or use him as 7th D and bide their time with Seabs. The trade is probably enough to make it worth AZ to take on the contract, but I think it's too high of a cost to the Blackhawks. If they were a serious cup contender and needed the space to make another move, then sure, mortgage a little future.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>newballcoach</b></div><div>Cool. We will trade you Travis Dermott and Zach Hyman for Debrincat. Sound good?</div></div>
Is Dermott signed at a reasonable contract for 2 more years or is he an RFA? Are the Blackhawks losing one of their top 3 D to free agency with little cap space so they should think about retooling to help their blue line? And is Hyman really a top 6 forward, or did he play on top 2 lines more so because of injuries and lack of forward depth? How does Debrincat work with the Leafs cap space, especially if the Leafs retain salary on Hyman? 50% of Hyman plus Debrincat's 6.4M is a net increase of $7.5M versus the cap, which puts the Leafs 2.2M over the cap while still needing at least 3 more forwards and now they're short another D. Yikes for them.
The Blackhawks also already have middle pair Dmen, and middle 6 type forwards, so I'm not sure what need Dermott/Hyman meet for the Blackhawks. I don't think your trade proposal for Debrincat is well thought out, to be honest.

They could even just resign their RFA's and be fine. No sense in them forcing a trade with a player of Nylanders calibre.</div></div>
Since when are a top 6 forward and a middle pair D scraps?

Sure Sergachev will go for more, but per this site I see only 5.3M in cap space and 3 D signed for next year. To keep him even at $4.5M per the Lightning will have to move a forward out, and it looks like all of them have a NTC or NMC (well Point doesn't but it won't be him). TB should definitely consider trading him before he gets an offer sheet. Nylander, Beaudin and a first is better than getting a compensatory 1st & 3rd. What would you realistically think TB will get for his RFA rights?

How much better is Connor Murphy than Dylan Demelo, Travis Hamonic, Chris Tanev, etc? Is he better than any of those guys? Good enough that you would waste assets trading for him? You could sign one of those guys and not have to trade Nylander (and don't talk about cap dump, if they need to dump salary it won't be Nylander).</div></div>
Well, the Leafs have $6M in cap space with only 9 forwards signed for next season and the blue line seemed like an issue last season...so you're knocking trading for a middle pair D on a reasonable contract and a really good winger in Saad at a $3M cap hit? I'm not sure how he Leafs just sign one of those free agents D without moving out salary. It seems they need to move out some salary already, no?

At 4x6.5 for Sergachev, shouldn't the Blackhawks just offer sheet him since TB can't match it without moving someone out? Per this site the compensation would be the 1st & 3rd. Or was part of the trade to be done with Nylander? You definitely wouldn't be alone in wanting to see Nylander go, lol.

Krug is great but he's 29 now. If I were a GM I wouldn't go more than 4 seasons, and I do understand he'll get a 6-7 yr deal in all likelihood so his agent would scoff at me as hypothetical GM. The odds are against him still being worth a 6M+ cap hit in 4 years. Most Blackhawks fans are fuming over the Seabrook contract (rightfully so), so I can only imagine the pitchfork & torch parties if they signed Krug or another D into his mid-30's at a large cap hit while they slowed even a half step.

I like SlickWilly's idea of bringing him in for a year at Rockford. If the AHL doesn't play a season, then sure, bring him on as an assistant coach or even like a special assistant to the GM so he's in the building.
Ideally, the Blackhawks take a step forward next season which means Colliton probably won't be fired and they allow Montgomery to interview elsewhere. If they don't take a step forward, Bowman and Colliton are likely out. and the new GM will have Montgomery in the building to promote or keep as an assistant.

I think the only way Colliton is fired and Nylander traded is if Bowman is fired, which I know is certainly not a deal breaker for a lot of fans, hah. I'd think Laviolette and Gallant would at least be considered by a new GM, if that they decided to move on from Bowman.
I know he didn't look good a lot of the time, but Nylander did just play his first full season in the NHL and is 22. We all would have liked for him to play better this last season. It's a touch early to give up on him in my opinion.

Kieth Seabs and Crow retire
To be fair to Keith, he did have 25 minutes TOI, playing in the 3rd game in 4 days against a bigger, more experienced and much better team. I thought just about all of the Blackhawks looked out of place and unsure of what to do at times in the series. Maybe it's more with a better & deeper lineup, however VGK was better coached as well. I thought Colliton out-coached Tippett in the play-in series, so maybe there's some hope for him as a head coach?
Crow had a Crow type of series. He let in a couple softies, won game 4 and kept them in game 5 looking great in both. I'd rather keep him for 1-2 seasons if they trade for Georgiev and use them in tandem unless Georgiev shows he can take over a #1 role.

St Louis Blues Realistic
I'm not sure why the Blackhawks would do the Blues a favor and give up a prospect for a cap dump in order to give the Blues enough space to sign Pietrangelo. The Blues would need to sweeten that deal quite a bit.
For example, bringing up a painful move for many (if not all) Blackhawks fans, in order to move Bickell a few years back it cost Teravainen. In order to move Sharp, the Blackhawks threw in Stephen Johns to Dallas.
And isn't Steen a bottom 6 forward these days?

For all the Kapanen won't be traded/not enough coming back comments I read...I think he's a good one to target in a trade. With Ceci and Barrie both UFA's, a solid D that plays over 20min a game is good value.
In general, Dubas is probably going to shop Kerfoot and Johnsson this off-season, and get asked about Kapanen and Nylander.

I think most people understand Jack Eichel isn't going to be traded. The only way he would be is if they brought in a new GM in 3-4 years and they wanted to do another full rebuild.
Also, as great as Eichel is on ice and he is about a 1pt per game player in his age 23 season...well below 50% FO win %, benefits from a 58% O-zone start, and he has yet to lead his team to the playoffs. It's less than ideal for a first line center.

Igor Shesterkin drafted in the 4th round of 2014...again 4th rounder and 5 years later he got his chance. He did play a few games last year.</div></div>
There's also Nalimov, whom the Blackhawks drafted (googling now..) in the 6th round in 2014. Had a .911 save % in KHL last season. Signed and came over March of this year, and I don't know if he even got in a game before the shut down. There's definitely a non-zero chance 7 years from now, one will be typing "....911 save % in KHL last season, just signed his ELC and is making his North American debut.." in reference to Askarov.
I get Askarov is better at age 18, he could be here in 2 seasons and be awesome. It's not a given. In terms of likelihood of drafting NHL regular players, the Blackhawks are better off going skater in 1st round and then double down on goalies in 2nd & 3rd if they're worried about their goalies in pipeline.

I agree with trading out of the 9th pick if all the top forwards and D are off the board. I'm not against drafting Askarov either, but it's easier to get a starting goalie in rounds 2-3 than it is to find even a middle six forward in those rounds. On their draft day, all of the goalies taken in the first round were can't miss exceptions to the "rule" about drafting a goalie in the first round. There also is the risk Askarov doesn't sign/come over for several years.
It doesn't make sense for a GM, particularly Stan given that his seat just got hotter, to risk the 9th overall pick on a goalie who likely won't help the team for 4-7 years-especially when statistically speaking he'd be better off taking one in the 2nd and one in the 3rd.

Whoa, that Crawford contract! It'd give Blackhawks fans a second nightmarish cap hit for a guy over 35 (Seabrook) to vent about on here.
While Toronto might trade RFA rights for Dermott plus a second for the oft injured De Haan, the Maple Leafs do need to do something about their D as their cap space is going to limit what they can do. I also suspect they'll have to overpay more than fans would like in whatever move they make (whenever the offseason starts).

I think the only people that liked the Seabrook extension were Seabrook, his family and agent. If I remember correctly it was well before he was due to hit free agency. The other CBO candidate some float out there is Zach Smith.
All in all, this is pretty much all they can do if the cap is flat. I would let M Subban walk and give Delia or another goalie in the pipeline a shot. Bringing back Crawford on a 1-2 year deal for about $4M give or take makes sense for all. It seems very unlikely he'd get a significantly better deal elsewhere.

Marner
The sentiment I've seen is Kerfoot and Andreas Johnsson are considered as more available than Marner. Not that I've read anywhere close to all the threads.
The Maple Leafs do have a minor cap issue next season, particularly if it remains flat as is now expected. They're losing two solid D men as UFA's and per here only have $7M in space. After a not worth $6.9 cap hit half season last year, William Nylander at least on the stat sheet rebounded. Some package including D-men might be able to get that done on this site.
In real life of course, NHL GMs tend to wet their pants at the thought of taking that much cap hit & term.

What
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HatterTParty</b></div><div>Thing you gotta remember about the penguins is that that team still made the playoffs every year. The thing that tilted things back in their favor is the players they drafted in between cups. They started to focus on players most people didn’t care about: the college players who were great skaters and hard workers. All that speed was injected into those 2016 and 2017 teams and they were explosive. The comparable between Kane/toews and Crosby/malkin, on the other hand, is kind of apples and oranges. Crosby and malkin are two of the game’s best offensive talents. Kane of course is, but toews, not as much. Crosby and Gino really willed some of those teams to the playoffs at times. Toews and Kane can’t really do that.
The rangers have really taken great strides this season. I still think their rebuild is over and believe next season they will be a playoff team.</div></div>
My comparison with the Penguins was more about them being a Cup contender that didn't blow it up for a rebuild and not a comparison of Crosby/Malkin versus Toews/Kane. While the Penguins did make the playoffs, there were 3 first round exits in those 6 seasons in between Cups for them. Instead of trading away Crosby and/or Malkin, they held onto their core and retooled. They did fire their GM and coaches, which is worth noting. My thought is bring in a new GM/coach and retool with Toews/Kane. Saad is good but I'd be willing to listen on offers, Seabs is a Blackhawk as long as he wants to be because of that contract if there's no CBO.
Blowing it up in a rebuild comes with the high risk of needing to nail the prospects and picks. Not every top draft pick becomes a top 5 scorer or Norris trophy winner.
